Oh how sweet it was to see Jackie Kelly's husband Gary Clark fined $1100 plus legals for his role in the fake Labor pamphlets, which reinforces my point - what goes around, comes around...it's called Karma pal - it has a way of balancing things out ;-)
The result of the election was just such a relief - 11 years of wasted opportunities and inward looking! Where's Howard now? Giving speeches (headjobs?) to neo-cons in the states! Da-daaaaaaaa-tish...
LOL actually it was 11 years of growing the australian economy that labor fundamentally weakened in their 13 years in office. nothing but record high interest rates and a very bad recession with slow growth after that
educ8me - the global recession has nothing to do with Rudd - nor do the low interest rates - they are set independently, by the reserve bank, in response to the global economic crisis. Likewise, Howard cannot claim credit for low interest rates...every man and his dog understand that one now! LOL indeed - sheesh - you are a funny one.
He's saying if Rudd claims credit for record low interest rates, he also claims responsibility for the most serious economic down turn in modern Australian history. That seem's perfectly fair.
Think about what you've just said here - "the most serious economic down turn in modern Australian history. That seem's perfectly fair." Firstly, you're forgetting - what we are experiencing here in Australia is the most serious *global* economic downturn in gthe last 60 years. Don't you get it? This is a *global* economic downturn, and not merely an Australian one??! To be fair you have to be factual ;-)
I appologise for that mistake. The global recession is a serious Australian economic danger aswell, though. I'm not saying it's Australia's fault, but I can suggest that it is the most serious economic downturn in modern Australian history. And that's correct. I did not blame the recession on Australia.
The problem whith your argument is that it flies in the face of *reality*. The reality is, every advanced economy in the world is going into massive deficit to reduce the effects of the global economic downturn. The reason why the Great Depression occurred is because global economies tried to maintain a surplus, which only served to entrench the situation. Hopefully we've learned since then - look at the deficit relative to GDP of the US, UK, & Japan (deficit 150% of GDP) compared to Australia!
I am aware of the GFC and the consequences that come with it. I object to Rudd's economic plan. In my opinion, handing out cash to effectively two thirds of the population is a bit inconsistent. How? People would've used it on mortgages, saved it, etc. That money could've been used on further infrastructure projects and such.
Coulda, woulda, wasn't - I think that the government's response is a little more complex than can be discussed here on Youtube. Do you henstly think that the Howard government would have responded to the call to stimulate the economy as effectively as the Rudd government. "No, no, no, we can't spend any many, we must sit on it and save it for an emergency...oh, hang on - THIS IS AN EMERGENCY - of Global proportions! You think our deficit is big? Don't look at Japan, you may have a heart attack!
the reserve bank has lowered interest rates in order to stimulate the economy. why? because unemployment is rising. the governments job is to balance the twin evils of unemployment and inflation.
when the economy is running normally, government spending affets inflation. that is why interest rates when so high under hawke - because the reserve bank punished home owners by raising interest rates to cut their spending when it should have been the government doing that.
Effectively? Effectively? Do you honestly think that people using their cash handouts on their mortgages is effective?
30 per cent of the recipients spent the cash on mortgages! that does not stimulate the economy! And because of this huge deficit, in years to come we'll have cataclysmically high interest rates... and not to mention high taxes. It seems to me like a temorary shield against the economic downturn. Rudd doesn't do what's best for the nation, he does what's going to win him votes.
I honestly don't know - treasury seems to think that the stimulus handouts made a difference - but I must say I am happier to see subsequent stimulus packages being directed towards infrastructure, which was really so sorely neglected by Howard. I Most people will struggle to say what the hell was done with all of those massive surpluses. What good is money sitting in a bank account. Investors spend money on shares - governments need to spend on infrastructure. Thank god Rudd is doing something!
Actually, alot of infrastructure was bulit under Howard. Adelaide Airport, the Southern Expressway in SA, the new Adelaide ship dock, just to mention a few in South Australia (I lived there). So, he did not neglect the concept of infrastructure. But I must say I agree with your statement about what good is money in the bank when you don't spend it. Both parties are fundamentally flawed, in my opinon..
I wouldn't deny the fact that infrastructure was built by Howard, but just not nearly enough in my view. Adelaide - great city! Each parties has its flaws, I agree, but you would have to agree that the Liberal Party aren't exactly in great shape at the moment, which, BTW, isn't great for democracy - we need strong opposition! I'm an ALP man but I respect the role of the Greens and certain senators - like your very own Nick Xenaphon - a definite man of wisdom! As for Greg Fielding - oh dear...
that was my point, rudd cannot claim credit for either.
why does the reserve bank put interest rates up? because of inflation. what causes inflation to go up during the good times when the economy is strong? excessive government spending and debt. that is exactly what we got under hawke and keating. the point of the government is to maintain the balancing act between inflation and unemployment and labor failed miserably
Your understanding of economics is fundamentally flawed. The reserve bank has not been raising interest rates at all - it has lowered them, and it has done so to stimulate the economy - as has the overwhelming majority of the world's other advanced economies. Malcolm Turnbull has said that he would be doing exactly the same thing as the Rudd government, so I'm not quite sure where that leaves you, or who the devil your argument is with?? Read 'Ozonomics' by Andrew Charlton and get with it man!

Well maybe that's why I find you so amusing AustralianNews. Where's your sense of humour? Yes, even people with a sense of humour are allowed to vote. What do you propose to do about that?
Didn't the late great John Winston Howard say that about the Australian voter? Thanks for the reminder of why booted this hyena from here to obscurity.
