Well the creator of the series never confirmed Spike's death. Remember Vicious also had a star, the creator also stated he would leave it undecided because he felt it would lead to a lot of fans using their imagination.

It is possible it's just not practical. Even though Vicious is my idol and I happen to be a something of a swordsman I would still probally bring a gun to a gun fight rather than a sword (slicing bullets in half is much harder than it looks).

the "wha?" i think has to do with the subtitles saying it was a bad dream and then it goes to the fan as if he was waking up. so the "wha?" is his response to the 'bad dream'.
