Wow. A LIVE version. In real VHS - maybe even BETA! Gotta love vintage video. This was one of those tunes that slipped under the radar screen in the late 70's - and probably one of Simon's (actually, Simon AND Garfunkel, who did the backup vocals with Paul on his album "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" AFTER they broke up) best songs.
My comments were taken out of context. when I said it was too bad about the Lyrics of this pretty song, I didn't want to infer it was a bad song because it's not really a bad song, not a really really bad song, well, not a really REALLY REALLY BAD Song. If you have earplugs in.
I'm itching like a finger on the trigger of a gun. Want out of my 'little town' because, truly, everything has died here. Yet, like so many, I can't sell the property so I am trapped.
now this pretty tune is such a classic i don't think they made a place for it in reality?? but in my reality i totally agree with paul. 1 of his best performancers ever. but him and simon will be sadly missed in my reality LOVE YOU PAUL AND SIMON!!!!
While Art did sing the vocals on this song, this was a Paul Simon solo song off of the "Still Crazy After all of These Years" album. Some 5-6 years after S & G were no more.
It is a nice tune, too bad about the lyrics. What does Simon know about little towns anyway. Someone should cover it and change all the words to have a happy song.
Thanks to my parents, "Breakaway" was one of the first albums I heard, so "My Little Town" is the first Simon & Garfunkel number I came across. It's possibly the best song they ever recorded together.
Not easy to do it justice live though; very tricky chord sequence.
@Hasslington yeah, the cartilage in your spine and all around the body doesn't go through mitosis (cell regeneration) so it wears away and we get short
These are all points taken, but you have to admit that there is an innocence that he intended in a young boy's having these experiences wash over him so obliviously. I myself had these experiences and I might choose to look at them scathingly at times now, while other times may call for a different approach. I am not questioning irony but rather having a moment of innocence.
I can't hear this touching song without thinking about the smalltown life I escaped but later came to appreciate--bikes, gates, factories, mom doing laundry, stream of consciousness
I would love to find out which part of the UK the clips of the 'little town' are. I find it amazing to think that Paul used to busk around Britain in the early 60s. am I right in beleiving that homeward bound was written somewhere around Liverpool? or a seaside town in the North West of England?
There's a plaque at Widnes station saying that he wrote it there (Widnes is between Liverpool and Manchester, and it's where the Stone Roses played Spike Island too, in 1990), but apparently (according to Wiki...) he actually wrote it at the nearby Ditton station, which is no longer in use, while he was heading to see his girlfriend in Essex.
Great Post, I have been looking for this video. Too bad Art is not there. Never seen this before. Thanks and God Bless! Seems like were I am at in FL and most of the world, we are living this song at this time.....UGH!
a great genius, this album is his masterpiece, in my opinion.. writing a song like this or "i do it for your love" without being genius is impossible.. thanks to share!!
@THE59TH Thanks for the post! Sad to hear about the other songs. Is there a chance that you could post them again and see, this time if they can be on YouTube just for while? I would really like to see them! :-)

Are you insane? He's almost 5' 4! Quite some difference! He does look short next to Garfunkel, though..

He's 5'2" these days. Gravity pulls us all down....
Thankfully, his music is as good as ever. Knowing this, who cares how tall he is?

castertunes1967 3 years ago 2
But it's not a touching song about smalltown life. It's a scathing indictment of smalltown life with a touching, beautiful melody:
"Pledging allegiance to the wall."
"My mom doing laundry, hanging our shirts in the dirty breeze"
"All of the colors are black.
It's not that the colors aren't there,
It's just imagination they lack.
Everything's the same back in my little town."
These are not appreciative images. They're expressions of meaninglessness. That's the song's power.

Totally agree. 'Still Crazy' is Simon at his all time best to me: Ascerbic, wistfull and dark with amazing song structures, lyrics and performance.
In my opinion 'My Little Town' tops most of the previous S & G canon. If only there'd been a live performance of it by them at the time.
