I have two nvidia 8400gs cards working in two different PCs. Games like call of duty 4 runs well, but when i run any 3d test (like fur test) it gives only 7 to 10 fps. both cards have the same problem....i can't understand why it is so!!!!!! can you help?

@Shianetto run a benchmark and see if there are artifacts, if not youre ok, but its dangerous to overheat so try adding a fan on the top of the gpu, this can prevent high temps

Counter Strike source gives you the ilusion of maps far away but they are not complete just on the gaming zones on fallout new vegas it loads the entire map except without the Buildings Grass trees ETC...

And in the 1024 it will use less cores because there's more space to fill in with data

First, you have to see how high is the gpu temp while you're playing, DON'T let the gpu reach 80º C,

it can go up to 90ºC but that's not safe for that card, once i was playing Crysis and the gpu was 80ºC

no artifacts but i had to decrease the frequency of the gpu.

i wasn't able to play Crysis with 450Mhz on the Memory. 445Mhz was the max or the screen will be full of artifacts.

Artifacts are small colored dots can be yellow white or really weird textures that appear on the screen if your overclock isn't stable or the gpu gets too hot.

@sonyeri09 Try one of those expansion slot fans , really noisy but perfect for putting next to these cards , I also made a little cardboard enclosure to give it really good air flow too , took my card temp down by 15 - 20C and improved overall system temps , gave me enough time to save up for a new machine and can get pretty good performance from it.

that's quite good but remember that the memory cant handle more than 450mhz without a heatsink

so try to get a better cooling before you think on higher clock speeds ;)

overclock means you can increase the speed of a CPU GPU or RAM

in this case the GPU core speed was 459Mhz and after overclocking was 620Mhz

so it runs faster and gives more FPS

but without better cooling you can damage your GPU or VRAM

use nvflash and nibitor, if you want oc the ram/oc core clock more i'd suggest you rise the ran latency all the way to the top and rise voltage at least 40% more then save the bios and start doing the pencil mod and external 4 pin power input(if necessary) on pcb. i did all of these on my 8400gs pci and it ran 1100mhz core/2750mhz shader /1450mhz(2900mhz ddr) ram.

PS: it beat stock 8600gt in cs source bench and only being mirror to 8600gt in hl2 ep1/2 in a tiny marge.

well i just keep my 8400gs for "fun" having torture it under extreme condition. thus the setup could have beaten stock 8600gt and on tie with stock 8600gts if not bottleneck from pci interface. also i oced my msi 8600gts diamonds plus to 900mhz core/2300mhz shader/1200mhz(2400mhz ddr)ram and it beat an underclock 9600gt and stock 3850/3870.

I have the G98 version of this card. It has a faster stock core clock of 567 MHz (1400 MHz stock shader clock), and I overclocked it to this:

Core Clock - 733 MHz

Shader Clock - 1800 MHz

Memory Clock - 478 MHz

No extra cooling was used, and it's pretty stable. I could overclock the memory more, but that would cause my games to crash after a while. =\

The 8400GS is a card which will completely handle basic operations, and run most games from up to 2006 really well. After that, you need to start decreasing some options. I run Far Cry at High with ~30fps and Crysis at Low, with a few things at Medium @ ~13fps. It's not the ideal one

i don't believe the monitor has anything with the res of the video card. i had the same res settings from when i used to have it on my small lcd monitor and now that i have it on my big hdtv.

the only thing that would change is the actual appearance of graphics(DVI->HDMI)  and not its gameplay preference.
