I have a West Highland Terrier and have malassezia, I've heard that this is a common sickness in this kind of breed but still, the doctor is medicating my westie because her skin have become black, and it's losing her hair, so let hope she get well because this is the best dog I ever had.

@Mittcher Hello, the reason Westies have skin problems sometimes is because they are given treats like schmackos. Anything unnatural will make their skin irritated. The only thing I give my Westie who has a wonderful coat is greenies for his teeth and liver treats. These are natural. Malasab shampoo may also help your little one Hope he gets better soon. I have a Westie and an Australian Shepherd/ Border Collie mix, that weighs about 55 pounds. She's sturdy enough to play around with the big dog--she can really hold her own. My particular Westie prefers to be in my company, but she doesn't mind to be around the other dogs in the household. Since she's older, she's a little standoffish. It's really going to depend mostly on your Westie's personality.

My westie is 8 now. He doesnt do anything but sleep all day. He hates walking and has since gotten fat(in my opinion). He has spurts of energy but he wont chase a ball, play with a chew toy, play with my other dog(he'll fight tho). He only likes chasing my brother and I but now we are older so we dont do that anymore.

Westies are fabulous dogs but can be stubborn.

My Katie died aged 16 ( 5 years ago ) and within 3 weeks I got 4 Westies to fill the empty void as it was so sad.

Sammy ( 13) Max (10 ) Phoebe and Alice both 8 years old.

They are friendly, adventurous, cheeky and very loyal.

I own two Westies with my girl friend and I believe that the american clip make the Westie to look like a poodle. It's almost a shame that thy cuts them, because the hair is destroyed and make the westie not alergi friendly. Anyone out there who has a Westie with skin allergies? My 11 yr old female, Bonita has had a black skin irritation for some time now, Vets do not seem to know what to do, except ask for more and more tests. This is getting very expensive with no positive results as of yet. Prednisone was recommended at one point but I feel that should only be used near the final yrs of life as it can be so damaging to a dogs metabolism. Anyone have any advice to forward to me, Thanks

Dont know where you got that information from, i've had westies for 25 years and none of them smelt in fact they are one of the better smelling breeds, and as for going blind and deaf your totally wrong, any dog can get a tumour and this breed is not particularly susceptibe to them, who's been telling you this information? In actual fact they are one of the healthier hardier breeds, some of them live up to 16 years of age.

im not lying my friend have one thats 14 and its Blind deaf smells have tumors problems walking and cant eat anything but rice, because westies have a very weak stomach and either cant digest the food or they get diaria. and yes every dog will get like that when they are about 8.

I've had three westies, 1st one lived to 14, 2nd one 16, and now I have another one, none of them smelt because they are groomed regularly, none of them were blind or deaf, had tumors or problems walking or had trouble digesting their food, your friends poor little westie must have been a one off or maybe your friend bought the dog from a puppy farm where they have all sorts wrong with them and thats not just westies thats any breed bought from a puppy farm!
