  • Me and a friend climbed and crossed over this bridge on foot in the mid eighties while it was in the up position at like 11pm,while I was up there I dropped a few m80 firecrackers of the side, and they all went off about 40ft above the water.

Very stupid thing to do at 17yo..very stupid thing to do at any age.

    Luckily no train came thru.

  • That's correct --- it's from 1958, and hadn't been in use until about 2006 or 2007...so it's a rather new thing that they're using it..

  • Where were you filming this?

  • BY8 crossing the Arthur Kill lift bridge free at W W W . TV-Video . us

  • I drive past here everyday on the turnpike for New Jersey Transit. I didn't think that bridge was in use anymore. Awesome capture!! Such an interesting area.

  • My Father told me that when he was little his father would take him and my Uncle to Staten Island and watch them switch at the Car float docks and use to wave at them and use to wave back and sometimes toot there horn.

  • I wonder how often daily do trains run here?

  • what type of camera do you have?

  • AFIAK, this is still the longest span of its kind in the world [almost 560 feet].

  • Awesome!!! I have always wanted to the the other Great Lift Span on the East Coast in Action now I have!!! The "other" Bridge I am speaking of is the Buzzards Bay Lift Bridge in Massachusetts!!! Could you ever post the bridge going up and down?

  • For 30 years, I've always seen that bridge in the up position. Since mid-July, I've seen that bridge in the down position 3 out of the past 4 times I've driven past it on the NJ Turnpike! Its cool to catch a trail going over it! Great video!

  • where are you standing to film this?

  • Excellent. I knew it was back in service, but I've never seen it in the down position. Behold, the longest vertical lift bridge is back in action!!!

  • if it wasn't for this video I wouldn't of know there trains going over that thing.

  • WOW, i always see that brodge when i'm on the gothals bridge, i never saw a train, i think now they let railfreight into my home town of staten island
