  • I need a nap and a Red Bull before I can watch this again.

  • Just a reminder that you are awesome for doing this. Thank you!

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i get it now!

  • where do you live

  • why does your C and D sharp always sound lika ..............brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • I don't know if i'll be able to understand how he talks... =(

  • I know this videos super old, but thanks so much for making it. I always had trouble understanding relationships between majors and minors and all the different minors. You explained it so well even if you think you didnt. Thanks a bunch for making learning the piano easier with your lessons!

  • I think any sane person would just stick to the harmonic minor scale.

  • Errrr.. So basically D sharp Major is the relative of C minor... So is the C-minor Scale a major scale in this case ? Wtf im confused :(

  • @Grogrosh No, the C Minor scale remains as a minor scale always. Every major scale has a minor scale that goes with it, and every minor scale has a major scale that goes with it. In this case, C minor is the minor scale, and D sharp major is the major scale. These two scales are called relative scales because they have the same notes, they just start on different pitches. Other examples of relative scales are C major and A minor, A major and F# minor, and G major with E minor.

  • What does Lypur say at 7:20? "... a little familiar. This sounds a little bit like a r****ing music." What is the word, please? THanks

  • @thenightoul He said it kinda sounds like Arabian Music

  • @LetMeBeMe93 Hence why harmonic minor scales are refered to mohammedan scales (islamic scales)

  • singing to yourself isn't as crazy as talking to yourself :D

  • It should be Eb major. We usually say it in flats.

  • nice hair...

  • 6:50 LOL!

  • the 1st time I watched this video it made no sense, then I watched it 2 more times and I get it!

  • Eb !!

  • I wuv you Wypur

  • This lesson was clear as mud. :( Certainly not for beginners.

  • He should've definitely gone slower when playing the scales...

  • This lesson was perfect for me.. Thanks a lot ;)

  • Dude I guess your kinda crazy but thanks a lot for the lesson!!

  • @raphael77ful all the top tier people are crazy

  • @MasterJuancho Hi. No, a second refers to the pitches specific to the key. For example, If I were to describe the note G in relation to C, and the key were to be C major (C B D E F G A B C), then the relation would be called a fifth. Even though there are 7 semitones between the two notes in the example, only 5 of them belong to the key I am concerned with, and so it is called a fifth. As for the relative minor and major question, yes, the relation between a major and minor scale is a minor...

  • @MasterJuancho ...third. This is the dreaded augmented second. However, when playing the progression of the relative minor scale, the tonic is first played, then the supertonic, and then the mediant. The tonic is the first note, the supertonic is the second note, and the mediant is the augmented second. Since the supertonic is in between, the dreaded interval is no longer in play.

  • Eb Major?

  • Comment removed

  • D sharp Major!!! Is the relative of C minor :)

  • Comment removed

  • I think you got the augmented 2nd interval mixed up between the diminished 5th/Augmented 4th that was the tritone which banned not an augmented 2nd. If I'm wrong my bad and ignore me hhaha

  • :trolldance:

  • When you raise the sixth and seventh notes of a scale by a half step as you go up the scale and then return to the natural minor as you go down the scale. For example:

    Melodic C Minor Scale = C - D - Eb - F - G - A - B - C (as you go up the scale)

    Natural C Minor Scale = C - D - Eb - F - G - Ab - Bb - C (as you go down the scale)

  • To play a harmonic minor scale, you simply raise the seventh note of the scale by a half-step as you go up and down the scale. For example:

    Natural C Minor Scale = C - D - Eb - F - G - Ab - Bb - C

    Harmonic C Minor Scale = C - D - Eb - F - G - Ab - B - C

  • i always saw the harmonic minor as a minor scale that uses the major seventh.. just like the major dominent 7th uses the minor...

  • I think I might have missed something basic early on. For the melodic minor scale: why is the C to a D# an augmented 2nd, but the E to the F# just a regular 2nd? Aren't they both augmented?

  • @computervideo1 C to D# = 3 halfsteps, E to F# = 2 halfsteps.

  • @computervideo1 Because there is no sharp between E and F, going from C to D#, there is C-C#-D-D#, which is three semitones, but from E to F# is E-F-F#, which is only two semitones, a major second. an augmented second would be E-F-F#-G.

  • thankyou lypur, you are a God send dude :)... I will try to follow your videos very closely!

  • Just whanted to thank you for the piano lessons, me and my dauther are learning so much and we love the way you teach!

  • I just wanted to thank you! Me and my daughter are learning so mucho with your videos, and we love how you teach!

  • The answer is D#, no? Because from a C minor, you must go up 3 semi-tones to hit the major... so, C-->C#-->D-->D#? ^^; Anyway, thanks for the great vids!

  • BEST THNG. Thanks now im pretty good for my music test :)

  • This video is winning.

  • What if the 6th or 7ths are already raised ?

  • i thought augmented 4th was the devil's interval?

  • @Yudansha92 Me too!

  • most of the second part didn't make it to my brain... i'm trying so hard and yet it's still not making it there... can you please tell me if the part on the white board is anything new or is it the same as the keyboard part but on paper instead?

  • @CopyCat1995 It's the same as the keyboard translated to paper :)

  • @TheUnderpanties thank you, that makes it so much easier to understand...

  • @CopyCat1995 What's so hard to understand? He explained everything very simply and even had history explanations which helped put everything in perspective

  • @Andreilg3 what's hard to me, was that he explained the same part twice( well, according to the guys who answered to me at least) and my headphone wasn't working that well, so i had a hard time listening to what he was saying.

  • @CopyCat1995 he was just going over what he said, its the same few points from start to the finish

  • 12:28 that doesnt sound right;o? yes it does its a bit from the progression of child in time^^ great lesson

  • and quite funny, haha

  • thank you for such detailed explanation!

  • AND ITS D# :)

  • THANK U

  • if major scale is Tone-T-T-SemiTone-T-T-T-ST then whats with a minor? what exactly is a natural? sorry for this questions but i'm really confused XD

  • 9:50 OHHHH!!!

  • damn doesn't work....

  • -fuckthatshit-

  • This is the best/easiest tutorial on the world wide web to understand minors. Great job sir, thank you very much! Indebted to you :)

  • You look like Beethoven lol

  • so.. would ludovico einaudis' nuvole bianche be in F natural minor? Can someone confirm? Thanks!

  • Answer to your question is : Es-dur. right? :D

  • @laarf

    correct answer in german.

    however in english its "e flat major" (dur=major ; *s=flat ; *is=sharp)

    or d sharp major.

so lypur, which one would be the better answer?

  • @skaterfugater

both should be correct. And Es-dur is not only used in Germany.

  • It was supposed to be buff and beefy I think lmao "Baaah! I am beef and buffy!" 6:46-6:56

  • he is too poor to buy speakers which means he is too poor to have lessons which means he comes here for free lessons but he complains so that means he is an idoit. mission accomplished!

  • im so confused?

  • Thank you so much for posting these videos. I think you do a great job. Love the evil laugh as well. Laugh = I am a master and I enjoy you struggling with easy piano ..HAHAHA in evil way. awesome!

  • You're the best teacher I ever known >.<"

  • took a couple of days to practice what i already learned and i got this a lot easier! gonna keep it up

  • hey andrew...while composing in melodic minor, can we use chords for both sharpened 6th and 7th as well as the natural 6th and 7th?

by the way...your lessons are a boon...have completed all your theory lessons :)

  • well i thought i was on a roll since i got the last hard one in my head alright gonna have to bookmark this one and come back to it. i was totally lost. (sad face) wait im on the internet. :( ya! i did a sad face the only thing i learned in this video how to do!!! i laughed myself.

  • buff guy:: YEAH I AM HUNTER AND I FUCK WOMEN AND TONICS.... haha nice job with the lessons

  • Major scale of C minor will be D sharp? D sharp is a black key, it can be played as a scale?

  • This was the most useful so far. Finally someone to teach me how the minor scales work and how their relative to their major friends Thank you

  • ah the harmonic minor it is! watched the whole video up to that part to know which one of the three sounded arabic :)

  • Your hair is amazing. :)

Thank you for the scales! I'm doing a technical exam for music tomorrow and this really helped! xx

  • This was sooooo helpful! Thank you! I am an adult student studying music, and it's ridiculously hard to find concise properly explained lessons and information on the subject, especially with all of the really weird exceptions and historical abnormalities. This tutorial really help me put this particular subject in order and have it make sense, so thank you!

I do have one question: on the Minor Melodic scale, as we go down we replace the two accidentals we added on the 6th and 7th keys. WHY?

  • The explanation of the theory behind the need to insert a tone that leads you to the tonic(the one before the "buff guy" joke, which was funny lol)-I`ve never actually known about that before! I`m so grateful to you for explaining that! :)

And yes! When I`m just fooling around on piano and playing some random melody I thought up...it`s like I always want to RETURN to the tonic or to some note that COMPLETES the melody/scale, what have u.

  • every went well from lesson 1 till i get to lesson 8, i'm so confused :(

  • my brain exploded during this tutorial, not ur fault though, THANK YOU AN DREW

  • my brain exploded during this tutorial

  • hahaha, happy cousin sad cousin

i love analogies like that, they make me remember :D

  • God will bless you for putting up all these pinao tutorial. I thankyou from teh bottom of my heart. <3

  • Im leearning this in music school and this is still confusing, I dont know how to apply this to my guitar playing

  • wait i wat is minor and major anyway? :P

  • this lesson 8 video has a problem. I can't continue to watch

  • you talk a lot but your videos are so informative so i still gotta watch

  • "Natural minor on steroids, ah!" I like that!

  • The tutorials are great. Theyve really sparked my interest in learning piano. Theres only one thing that I need to point out. Its the volume, when you do the stuff on the whiteboard or are at the whiteboard, the volume is quite low, obviously cause the camera is far away. When youre showing the piano keys, your voice is much louder.

  • C minor is D major right? (I don't have me keyboard out so I'm doing this in my head)

  • Comment removed

  • @memRose63 D# major. 3 semi tones up from C is D#. D is only 2 semi tones up from C.

  • that helped improved my theory soo much man :)

    thanks a bunch

  • when i look in the moon, i always see andrew there :/

  • your mind is inprisioned by your knowledge. nothing sounds "bad", just "diferent".

  • Dear Lypur,

Have you ever find out that video's original screen are 16:9, but it display on youtube turn to 4:3. It make the image kind of weird.

  • its getting bore now

  • its getting bore now

  • You sound evil when you laugh...

  • So all the harmonic and melodic minor scales are just major scales with the 7th (harmonic) and 6th and 7th (melodic) raised a semi tone?

  • I have a question. If I was asked to play a C natural minor scale do i have to go to the relative minor to play it.. or can i just play " C, D, Eb, F,G, Ab, Bb, C

  • I could be wrong, but I believe it was the tritone that was considered evil in the middle ages. I've never heard anything about a minor third.

  • Thank you Andrew for your wonderful videos and the effort you put into teaching us. Love the jokes too! God bless you,

    Salvador

    Mexico

  • bro thank you this was explained very easily. yours awesome!

  • @Lypur

The relative major of C minor is D#.

    Am I right?

  • @ssscrusher Yeah you are right, you can always check by working both scales out individually using the interval patterns. Remember, Major is 2,2,1,2,2,2,1 (whole tone, whole tone, half tone, whole tone, whole tone whole tone, half tone) and Minor is 2,1,2,2,1,2,2 (whole tone, half tone, whole tone, whole tone, half tone, whole tone, whole tone)

  • @ssscrusher we win at life! it was D#

  • I just started playing piano.... last night... anyways, I was inspired to play by a song I heard, I got the intro down, and I know what I need to do, but I have problems moving my hands around the piano, and my placement of my hands is off a lot... do you have tips for this or is it something that will come with practice and few shortcuts?

  • are they paying you for this

  • The relative major of C minor is E flat?

  • @konarider E flat MAJOR.

  • You are a great teacher and very knowledgeable. However, may I make a suggestion? It's not as much that you speak too soft. But you are not using the right mike. Perhaps if you had a good lapel mike. Also, do not be afraid of raising the audio level on the audio amp that you are using. It needs to come up quite aways. The first part of each of your lesson is good with the piano music, but then when you speak, your voice is way down in audio level and no one can hear you!!

  • not afraid by eminem @ 9:00 :P

  • Augmented second? Were tritones not called the devil' s intervals?

  • nice video, just a few things, the demonic interval is actually an augmented fourth or diminished fifth...

another thing, i have trouble with is that I always learned the minor scales just like you said on the video, but now that I started studying music, my teacher tells me that a natural minor is actually 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 8, a harmonic minor is 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8 and a melodic minor is 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7 8 going up and going down just like a minor natural,,,,,,,,, have you ever heard it this way?

  • you are funny

  • aaagh .. kinda confusing :S

  • so, if im playing a song in the tonality of C (mayor C) can i start playing the minor relative scale (Am, minor A) but i mean, not the natural minor scale, the harmonic minor scale???? is the harmonic and melodic scales in Am relatives to major C???

  • Eb Major :P

  • Andrew, I´ve been playing piano for about two months now. I just want to let you know that this tutorials are outstanding, congratulations. Thank you very much in the name of all beginners. Really good work, thank you.

  • I AM BEEF AND BUFFY AND I WEEL POOSH YOU TOO THA TONIC

  • I thought only the ASCENDING 6th and 7th degrees are raised in a melodic minor scale??

  • Wow, I actually understood that. Thanks.

  • okay I thought I was doing good but now its seems like every lessons is getting harder and harder for me to understand :-(

  • C D# CD# CD# mwahaha, you kill me!

  • Hey! :-) You are a great teacher! God has blessed you with a great talent! :-) I do have a question for you though( anyone who understands music theory can answer this if you want); there is a minor with a lowered 3rd, 6th, and 7th. What is that minor scale called?

  • you are so awesome.

  • I am in Intro to Music right now, and you have helped me soooo much! You are totally awesome... and of course it's always nice to have a good looking music theory teacher.... somehow it's all easier to grasp :D lol Thanks!!!

  • relative major for C minor is Eb Major... Let me know if i am rite plz lol

  • @HigherState001 No its E Major. If C is your minor then It goes C, D, Eb, E. So E is the relative major. An easy way to remember is that the are 12 notes in the scale and it loops around:

A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, G#......and then it goes back to A. If you remember this you can easily find any note you want. Hope this helps.

  • @kdemaria5 You contradicted yourself there. You said it goes C, D, Eb, E. But going by your scale you wrote out, 3 semi tones would be C, C#, D, Eb. You forgot the C# meaning that the relative major would be Eb Major.

  • @HigherState001 You are. It's 3 semi tones up, so C goes to C#, D then D# (which is also Eb).

  • dam i really need a real keyboard this built in pianopc thingie thing isn't really doing it good

  • hey guys a little trick that i am using to remember the minor scales or the harmonic atleast is the harmonic demonic one is the one where the 7th is raised. im hooked on mnemonic's

  • if there were Youtube Emmies, i'd nominate you :3

  • Can you tell me what exactly is the point of learning scales? Do musicians just put it into a piece like a whole scale? I also wanted to know what playing a certain song in C minor or A major would exactly mean?

  • Can someone please explain, if a major scale goes: tone; tone; semi-tone; tone; tone; tone; semi-tone and if A minor natural is the same as A major, why does he play tone; semi-tone; tone; tone; semi-tone; tone; tone? Thanks
