Yes, the German 1800s Brothers Grimm version of the story would definetly be disturbing compared to Charles Perrault's original 1600s French version which more resembles Disney's movie.

I don't think the step mother had anything to do with the fathers death. She did seem to have some care as she did run to him when he fell. I think the reason she hated Daniel and such was as her father was dieing he kept saying to Daniel that he loves her and was only focused on Daniel and never really acknowledged the step mother so she was probably jealous of Daniel after that?

drew barrymore was the most incredible cinderella ever, and dougray scott was the most handsome and charming prince. The way henry loved to irritate danielle(as a joke) and the way danielle always rose to the occasion was quite humorous. you could tell they had the right chemistry right from the start. It will always be my very favorite cinderella movie of all time.

Back in those days women had no right to own anything, that is unless they were incredibly rich to begin with and often assuming there was no male heir to take over the fortune. Where Danielle's dad says to Danielle "You'll have to show her the ropes around here, the baroness isn't used to getting her hands dirty", is a clear sign she was a lady of status.
