Doctors used to try and get to the root of peoples problems, now they prescribe meds. I see it with kids in school. I am a high school teacher and I know for a fact that kids are over medicated for a number of reasons besides depression.

During the depression people could barely survive and then they were asked to make more sacrifices when WW2 started and had to fight a war. They had gas and food rationing, millions died and yet today we have people on meds because they are depressed. Go to Africa and ask a kid that has no food if he needs depression meds or food. First, depression can have a reason that have to be treated with medication: seriously treated with medication.

But, of course there's misuse of those medicaments.

Second, People in Africa certainly suffer from those illnesses, too. But since there are other worries first and most of the time their countries aren't even developed enough to have medical care good enough to even consider treatment of depression or other psychologic ilnesses. The kid you mentioned just won't know that he's sick.

Like what? The most you can do is talk to him, and his parents. Rarely does that help the kid feel any better. I used to be bullied a lot and I can understand a lot of these kids snapping. The school system sucks, and it leaves all kids feeling helpless. The system needs to be fixed, and the parents need to shape up and show these kids some genuine attention... And bullying needs to be delt with extensively.

If a student is acting suspiciously,schools should be allowed to expel students until they have been cleared by a phychologist. this is the least they could do. and yes,bullying is a huge and difficult to handle problem. there are very few effective measures that can be done, especially when the parents aren't doing their job. I can't possibly think of a solution the ACLU would consent to, except the complete banning of guns, which would't wok anyway

I've a friend that received a script for anti-depressants simply because her boyfriend broke up with her.

I think doctors prescribe these pills too much to youngsters, I never remember my friends ever taking pills years ago when I was in school in the 1980's, this seems to be a recent thing. I'm sure that's why todays society is so crazy because of too much drug taking of all kinds. I think there are exceptions when it comes to anti-depressants, lots of older people may benefit from them, but I don't understand why so many kids are taking them.

Absolutely. When I was going through middle school the medical office was loaded with drugs for kids. It was unbelievable. The only medication I EVER take is my insulin, occasionaly I might take liquid tylenoll, but other then that I never use drugs of any kind. People who are depressd need friends and family, not drugs.
