I cant imagine losing a child in such a horrendous way and one family lost two children, how sad. I hope these kids didn't have to suffer not even for a minute. What is really sad is that the train was short and the car wouldn't have had to wait but maybe a few more seconds to cross the tracks if they had stopped. I can clearly see both gates down at :11 (the right gate looks orange), and at :12 u can see the driver go around the gate into the opposite lane. It looks as if in the last second the driver may have been aware of the train because the car has a slight inward turn possibly due to driver reaction. I feel sorry for the families of these children and the all those involved on the train.

Looking at this video it is clear the driver was at fault. He carelessly went around lowered crossing gates on the wrong side of the rode and did not stop for the train which was doing everything right, including blowing the horn as mandated by the FRA. The only ones I feel sorry for are the Conductor that had to see this and the Engineer who has to live with this idiots actions every time he operates a locomotive. You can clearly see the horror in the Conductors body motion when he sees car.

Also, P42's use whats called blended brake. Anytime a brake pipe reduction is made with the combined power handle (throttle) in idle and the brake cylinder pressure is not actuated off, it puts the loco into dynamic mode, and as more dynamic effort is built up it reduces brake cylinder pressure...usually 7psi. In emergency, full Brake Cy pressure develops and again, dynamics come onto full and brake Cy pressure releases down to 7lbs. As train stops, BCP increases to prevent runout.

Gate arm shadow shows the gate is down. Plus the counterweight is at 90 degrees. Progress it further, and he is on the wrong side of the road passing the down gates. Something that poor engineer will have to live with forever. I feel sorry for the family of the dead, but the driver was an idiot for running that gate.

One thing people don't realize is that a train going 70-80 mph can't stop on a dime and may take up to a mile to come to a complete stop. So if that train does hit something, whatever it hit is going to be dragged quite a distance.

They recovered the data recorder from the Fusion and it said that he sped up to 70 mph going down hannan toward the tracks... and he whipped around a white SUV that was stopped at the gates. As a result, people who had their whole lives ahead of them no longer do. That's absolutely horrible. All because of one idiotic decision.

Actually the railroad companies are not responsible for the installation of the gates. The Department of Transportation is. The railroad only maintans the signals.
A quadrant style crossing signal setup can go up to $1 Million believe it or not. And with the enconomy like it is now, the railroads are too busy with other things, but with signal setups in the video, those roads appeared to be rural and narrow, more heavily used roads and highways would have bigger signal setups.
I feel for the conductor, coming onto an accident scene like that with 5 bodies is horrible, especially if they are young. It must have been pretty horrific as one look and his expression said it all.

Anyone know how these engines work? The reverse sounded something like a 747 thrust reverser. I assume its some kind of turbine/hydraulics connection.
To supply power, the prime mover (the big diesel engine) generates electrical power that in turn is supplied to electrical traction motors on each axle. These traction motors can in turn be made into power generators by simply reversing the flow of electricity. In simple terms, the flow of electricity is reversed from the traction motors and the juice is then run through a resistor grid (which in turn produces heat that is blown away by a fan). The whine that is generated is from the fan.
@commhealy No. On a General Electric P42 (the locomotive in the video), when the emergency brake is applied, the dynamic brakes come on as well to slow the train down faster. Think of dynamic brakes as shifting down gears on your car. Most locomotives have a penalty power cut out feature (in other words when the emergency brake is applied the dynamic brake cut out in order to keep the wheels from locking up). I guess the P42 does not have this feature.
Actually you are not quite correct. Most freight locos have been modified to provide 20-30 secs of dynamic brake before it cuts out. This helps prevent train separations such as if the dynamic brake was being used descending a long grade due to an emergency brake application. And more specifically, its to keep wheels from sliding, not locking up all together.
@commhealy The "reverser" is the engineer putting on the dynamic brakes which turns the traction motors ,that normally power the axels , into generators that slow the train without slaming on the brakes. the traction motors generate electricity that is fed into resistance grids and dissapated as heat through the fans on top of the locomotive.
@commhealy I don't know how this works at dieselhydraulic locos, but here in the Netherlands this could be the sound of electrodynamic braking, (also known as recuperative or oversynchrone braking, where the electro-motor is switched as a generator, and get's some very bulky resistors as a load to bite on: that's also the reason I think you mostly hear a big (or more) fan of some sort in this video, to cool things down.

This incident must still be under investigation, as I did not find an FRA accident report on this crossing: Hannan Road, Wayne, MI, crossing ID 545191U, 14 trains a day (including AMTK), max timetable speed for Amtrak is 70 MPH. Norfolk Southern owns the tracks. The last incident in the FRA database was on 8/11/77 when a car ran into the side of a Conrail train, no injuries.
The black box in the car recorded 25 at the time of the collision. Maybe panic braking at the last second or had to slow down to get around the gates.

Gate arm shadow shows the gate is down. Plus the counterweight is at 90 degrees. Progress it further, and he is on the wrong side of the road passing the down gates. Something that poor engineer will have to live with forever. I feel sorry for the family of the dead, but the driver was an idiot for running that gate.

you can see the shadow but they wernt down ok i have watched this video alot and the rails are not down and if they were they would of be broke or something but there not and i know that because my grandma lives right by them.and they didnt go down because their was people working on them that day.

@lilnicci123 on further review I can infact see both gates are down, and they would not be broken because he swerved around them, I paused at 12 seconds this time, and can see the bar, the car allows you to see them alot better, the next time you go by there, see where the shadow of the bars are, I have yet to see a bars shadow be where the signal lights shadow are. The only thing that I'm not sure if he clipped the gates right before he was hit, it almost looks like it yearsmith has it right.

What a horrific, senseless accident. Why would you try and beat a train? Just wait a couple seconds!
One thing people don't realize is that a train going 70-80 mph can't stop on a dime and may take up to a mile to come to a complete stop. So if that train does hit something, whatever it hit is going to be dragged quite a distance.
Almost all of these accidents involving people hit by trains could have been prevented by just exercising common sense.

Oh he heard it. They recovered the data recorder from the Fusion and it said that he sped up to 70 mph going down hannan toward the tracks... and he whipped around a white SUV that was stopped at the gates. As a result, people who had their whole lives ahead of them no longer do. That's absolutely horrible. All because of one idiotic decision.

this exact same thing just happened Monday, Nov 16th in South Carolina...speeding Amtrak as well...everyone in the car killed instantly (4 people incl a 12-year-old girl)...27-year-old woman driving... & just in time for the holidays...such a needless tragedy because of 1 idiot who couldn't wait 30 sec for the train to pass...i'm betting the locomotive in SC had a video camera too...

Something made the conductor jump at 2:30. His reaction says a lot. I feel very, very sorry for him, and those who had to witness this terrible accident. The driver was an idiot, and had had his license suspended for traffic violations, only 2 days prior. He murdered 4 kids.

umm hi i am the cousin of one of the passangers and if you stop at 11 seconds you will see that the rails are not down at all and the reason he was speeding was because he was late for work. so watch the video again and stop at 11 seconds ohkay.;

A quadrant style crossing signal setup can go up to $1 Million believe it or not. And with the enconomy like it is now, the railroads are too busy with other things, but with signal setups in the video, those roads appeared to be rural and narrow, more heavily used roads and highways would have bigger signal setups.

if you think this is bad, you should see the (youtube) video of the mom in minivan who tried to beat a train. she was racing a train from a parking lot for 3 min toward a gate. both the train and car reach the gate, the car got there first and was about to beat the train. but wouldn't you know it. as she crosses the gate, a surprise train coming from the other direction smashes into her.

To supply power, the prime mover (the big diesel engine) generates electrical power that in turn is supplied to electrical traction motors on each axle. These traction motors can in turn be made into power generators by simply reversing the flow of electricity. In simple terms, the flow of electricity is reversed from the traction motors and the juice is then run through a resistor grid (which in turn produces heat that is blown away by a fan). The whine that is generated is from the fan.

@commhealy No. On a General Electric P42 (the locomotive in the video), when the emergency brake is applied, the dynamic brakes come on as well to slow the train down faster. Think of dynamic brakes as shifting down gears on your car. Most locomotives have a penalty power cut out feature (in other words when the emergency brake is applied the dynamic brake cut out in order to keep the wheels from locking up). I guess the P42 does not have this feature.

Actually you are not quite correct. Most freight locos have been modified to provide 20-30 secs of dynamic brake before it cuts out. This helps prevent train separations such as if the dynamic brake was being used descending a long grade due to an emergency brake application. And more specifically, its to keep wheels from sliding, not locking up all together.

@commhealy The "reverser" is the engineer putting on the dynamic brakes which turns the traction motors ,that normally power the axels , into generators that slow the train without slaming on the brakes. the traction motors generate electricity that is fed into resistance grids and dissapated as heat through the fans on top of the locomotive.

@commhealy I don't know how this works at dieselhydraulic locos, but here in the Netherlands this could be the sound of electrodynamic braking, (also known as recuperative or oversynchrone braking, where the electro-motor is switched as a generator, and get's some very bulky resistors as a load to bite on: that's also the reason I think you mostly hear a big (or more) fan of some sort in this video, to cool things down.

It was nice of the crew to use dynamics and not plug it, for the sake of the people on board. I've never experienced it, but hear it's one helluva jolt on a passenger train as compared to a big freight train.

Agreed. You've just hit someone doing 50-60 MPH, not much more dumping it will help anyway. At that point you're worried about keeping everyone on board safe. A Ford Fusion doesn't stand much against a P42DC...
Still, think proves that you should never try to beat a train. You could gain a few seconds, or lose a lot of years.

This incident must still be under investigation, as I did not find an FRA accident report on this crossing: Hannan Road, Wayne, MI, crossing ID 545191U, 14 trains a day (including AMTK), max timetable speed for Amtrak is 70 MPH. Norfolk Southern owns the tracks. The last incident in the FRA database was on 8/11/77 when a car ran into the side of a Conrail train, no injuries.

The black box in the car recorded 25 at the time of the collision. Maybe panic braking at the last second or had to slow down to get around the gates.
