  • What a melancholic song - surely up there with "Smells like Teen Spirit" as an anthem for Generation X. Something protected a corner of my mind from the ravages of age and excess so well that I didn't even know it was there. No wonder I kept looking twice at Shirty the Slightly Aggressive Bear, and there was always something about that Jason Donovan kid...

  • I loved this show, best kid's show I thought, could not wait to get home to watch it.

  • See what drugs will do to you punkeeee.

  • I'm trying to figure out if this is the same show where a female gets shrunk and sinks in a cow patty and she grabs unto a fly to be rescued after being neck deep. Does anyone know?

  • Can anyone tell me who played the characters Flower Potts and the panda couple. This has brought back so many memories I am nearly in tears.

  • Brian Crossley played Mrs Flower Potts; Jack Manuel was Percy Panda; and Carole Walker played Betty Bruin.

  • Thanks for the post of Adventure Island. It brings back memories of simpler days in Australia during childhood years. Thanks. Denis (Canberra)

  • With the recent death of Godfrey Phillip, I googled his name to see if I could find some references to Adventure Island and was rapt to come across all this. Have been playing the closing theme over and over again, and was amazed to find that I remembered most of the words. I too lived in the country and only had the choice of two channels, so this was an absolute must watch. The fantasy was brilliant, and if there were adult overtones, I didn't get them as a kid - just LOVED the show.

  • Im 45 and Grrrrunt said it all. Thanks for taking me back briefly to a time when being a child was something special.

  • Google '' Tape Trading '' and email him for DVD episodes of Adventure Island

  • Gee, are the tears flowing from my face, this is my favourite show when I was young.Even more so now I have heard the words to this song, I lost my beloved sister five years ago(17.08.03)and the words to this song are even more intense to my child hood now. Thanks for the most wonderful and most precious moments of my childhood. Time spent with my five sisters and dear mother.

  • Google the Australian link ( rolgen ) '' Tape Trading '' and ask him about the DVD of four episodes of Adventure Island .

  • Adventure Island was only shown in B/W during it's run but can you imagine what it would have looked like in color had it stuck around on TV a few years longer?

  • @jpx08 I dunno - I was in such a flat spin from HR Puff'nstuff that a colour Adventure Island would have finished me.

  • Thanks for posting this and as you can see from all the comments below you have brought back some wonderful memories of when childhood was much simpler.

I recal this programme (I am 45) and it was great. My sisters and myself really enjoyed it as "little kids".

While the commercial stations in Australia were running rubbish from the US, this home grown program on the ABC had a large audience share and was enjoyed by millions of children.

  • Ok, here am I , bloke of 48 and bawling. How good was this? No other kids show made me feel as special. Thank you for posting.

  • Good stuff.

Do you have any actual Friday closers - the one where Sue McIntosh/Donovan clicks her fingers at the end?

  • Google the Australian link ( rolgen ) '' Tape Trading '' and email him about the DVD of the four episodes of Adventure Island

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I have been trying to track down some visuals of this for years. I must have been 3 when I watched this but I still remembered it!

  • Lovely to hear this again after so many years. What strikes me most about this song, as an adult, is its strength as a composition. While its quality obviously wasn't lost on some kids (given that I can remember it to this day!) it could have stood alone as a great popular song of the era. Specifically, I'm thinking that it would have melded well with The Seekers' early repertoire. Thanks for posting it!

  • Not wrong.Bruce Rowland a musical genius.

  • I have Four different 30 min episodes of Adventure Island on the one DVD . Does anyone want a copy ?, then send me your postal address and name .

  • I would SO love a copy of it, for sure. This was my favorite show as a little girl. Coming up to 39 this year and I have a little girl who'd love this.

  • Thank you very much for the memories.

  • thanks from a child of the 70's

  • wonderful brings a tear to your eye

  • Great job David. Through your efforts I hope Godfrey Philipp's remarkable era of entertainment (enjoyed by adults as well as children) is remembered for a long time to come - and hopefully inspires current children's TV producers to create new fantasy shows that tap into Adventure Island's spirit of innocence, fun and wonder.

  • Some fond memories here.I just loved Adventure Island.Being from the country with only 2 channels back in the 60s/70s,this was a must watch show.Another show from this era was the Magic Boomerang.Would be great if the ABC released some of there earlier productions onto DVD.
