I guess my response, what I can even surmise about the 80's, even though, not being able to really truly be apart of it, it seems like it was the time when the whole world was still in front of you and even more than that; it was ineffable.
I downloaded the lyrics to this and it still doesn't make any sense, not that any of the Firs' songs need to. Great to hear Brits that don't drop their accent - kudos for pronoucing "fade" as "fide". Interesting that the ghost inside is female. A quinticential eighties conundrum of music with indecipherable lyrics that will probably not be covered by other artists because, frankly, it doesn't need to be and could only be done poorly anyway. I was 20 in 1984 and life was wonderful back in the 80's. There was an unbelievable flood of amazing music from 78-85 or so. Early 80's new wave was brilliant. Talking Heads were at their height, and the bar dance scene was awesome!! We all miss our youth I suppose and look back on it perhaps less objectively than we should but too bad. I wish it were 82 and I was 18 again!

@LuiL3wis Oh my god, there is so much good music from this era is is impossible to cover, but check out " the ministry, the cure, echo and the bunnymen, depeche mode, china crisis, general public, blanc mange, howard jones, sorry blanking out right now, but you are on the right track. This is the best music ever! Mike.
I feel hip just listening to this song. It makes me want to ask a girl to dance at spring semi-formal. Love it, it INSTANTLY brings me back like a TARDIS.
i was in my 20's when all of these outstanding tunes came out. i just wish that those bands could have made much more of this type of music, it sends messages of love and spirituality right straight to your heart, i get a totally natural high from grooving to this and all the other songs from them 1 or 2 hit wonders, man i miss them days "SIGH" PEACE
@topcatroar61oliosc Familiarize yourself with the Furs' entire oeuvre and you will never again mention their name in the same sentence as "one or two hit wonders." People who measure musical quality by that scoring system, especially while referencing the Furs or The Cure or Echo and the Bunnymen, or Neil Young and on and on, are, to put it indelicately, assholes. And I'm confident you're NOT one of those. Superior bands require that you consider a body of work. Happy listening.
I was introduced to this song through BT's cover on "These Hopeful Machines". Such beautiful lyrics, but I feel his version truly captures their intent.
One of THEE most pure pop songs ever written. Such emotion packed in,"hearing you my engines fade", goose bumps, oh god how I ache for these days again...
To jeffthecanuck & mmafighterx: I've listened to music form 1959 to 2011 and the 80s gave us the best music. A totally unique blend of rock, audio technology, style and just "outside the box" boldness. Nothing like it since.
@ThePinklover76 i know, right! i listened to this song all the time when i was a kid, now this song is permanently attached to memories of happier times for me.
It was hard to find these bands at music stores. Nobody knew what to call it, so they made a new category called " New Wave ". If it wasn't for these type of bands the 80's would have sucked.
I never understand people who only like one decade of music....I just like music. I'm not going to limit myself to one period. There has always been great music.
@basehead617 exactly...from the age of 5 I was taught classical music, was lucky enough to be 10 around the time of The Police and Gary Numan coming through...then early Depeche Mode....after that it was Motorhead and AC/DC etc and then onto the Madchester UK Indie Scene, into Rave and beyond, ended up DJing Techno at big London clubs....it's music...and I'm of the opinion there is "music you like and music you dont like" not "good and bad music"...
@basehead617 exactly...if you stayed in the 80's you'd miss Butlers Good Days, Bad Days (and ok it's the same singer) but if you've never been involved in the Dance music scene you may never have heard this song....search for "The Source Featuring Candi Staton - You Got The Love " and when Candi Staton sings it's just pure happiness or the guitar intro of the Happy Mondays God's Cop....or MGMT's Time to Pretend....I think that's me covered the 90's and 00's for great tunes..
@alanlaing same with me. im 13 years old and my friends hate any old music. okay, i like new music, but i get tired of the autotunage and there is only synthesized drums and main instruments. but im open minded and i like any music. and alternative songs always have a great message like this song
@alanlaing - it's all good!! I too like all sorts of music from many different decades/genres but I gotta say there was something totally awesome about the 80's .... cheers!
the first real time i heard this song was when i was working in Banff Canada, I played it on my Sony Walkman (freekin high-tech back then). As i walked along the streets with my girl, lookin around the scenes ... why we have to die, f***
Cats Cradle July 2nd My favorite band since I was 13,bought my first LP at a thrift store and 25 yrs later I get to finally see them.I can't wait to get that record autographed :]
saw em play at west chester univ in early 80s. they played for 100 students as if they were playing for 100,000. butler had jaggeresque charisma. totally tits.
amazing how they able to combine loneliness and joy together with this song... lots of memories surfaces when i hear this song... thumbs up if you're watching this in 2011... ♥
The perfect prom song.

Inolvidable Banda Inglesa de los ochentas¡¡¡
MrAlbertrock 6 months ago
It was hard to find these bands at music stores. Nobody knew what to call it, so they made a new category called " New Wave ". If it wasn't for these type of bands the 80's would have sucked.

I never understand people who only like one decade of music....I just like music. I'm not going to limit myself to one period. There has always been great music.
alanlaing 6 months ago 29
@alanlaing totally agreed - and the best thing is how hugely different music is between the eras.. there is a vast world of it to explore..
basehead617 6 months ago
@basehead617 exactly...from the age of 5 I was taught classical music, was lucky enough to be 10 around the time of The Police and Gary Numan coming through...then early Depeche Mode....after that it was Motorhead and AC/DC etc and then onto the Madchester UK Indie Scene, into Rave and beyond, ended up DJing Techno at big London clubs....it's music...and I'm of the opinion there is "music you like and music you dont like" not "good and bad music"...
alanlaing 6 months ago 2
@basehead617 exactly...if you stayed in the 80's you'd miss Butlers Good Days, Bad Days (and ok it's the same singer) but if you've never been involved in the Dance music scene you may never have heard this song....search for "The Source Featuring Candi Staton - You Got The Love " and when Candi Staton sings it's just pure happiness or the guitar intro of the Happy Mondays God's Cop....or MGMT's Time to Pretend....I think that's me covered the 90's and 00's for great tunes..

@alanlaing indeed. 80s,90s,2000s,it's all lovely to me. sure,i have my likes and dislikes, but no one generation is dominant to me.

@alanlaing Any song that has a good meaning and is good. Then ill like it
Awesomeduud 4 months ago
@alanlaing same with me. im 13 years old and my friends hate any old music. okay, i like new music, but i get tired of the autotunage and there is only synthesized drums and main instruments. but im open minded and i like any music. and alternative songs always have a great message like this song
BananaPhoPhilly 4 months ago
@alanlaing - it's all good!! I too like all sorts of music from many different decades/genres but I gotta say there was something totally awesome about the 80's .... cheers!
