Why don't games have this stuff built in? I'm on a pair of pretty sweet headphones right now, the AKG 272HD's, closed, and this video is the best virtual surround experience I EVER had. I bought the Sapphire headphones with built in dolby tech, and they were absolute crap. The only effect you got out of them was that it was extremely hard to figure out where sounds were coming from, which is the oposite of what you want. Seems like this kind of virtualization could be done on a driver level.

If you really wanted "sound quality" why did you buy those gaming headphones? Razor and Logitech are not even in the same league with Sennheiser when it comes to sound quality. With 400$ you could buy a pair of Senn HD650 <- over the top audiophile grade (the surround effect is easily obtained with foobar2000+Dolby Headphone Wrapper at no additional cost).

Anyway, do you realize that this virtual surround is not really headphone dependent? (Sound quality is another matter entirely).

Holy crap, that was pretty good. I was even using crappy iPod earbuds. Front channel was very weak, however back channel was pretty good, but left/right were very easy to distinguish up and down. For example, on my right ear, i could hear it move above me, then below me. I'm planning on getting the Astro Mixamp and either the Sennheiser HD 558 or the Ultrasones HFI-780 for watching blu-ray movies, can't wait. Also if someone can recommend a better setup for me that would be great.

This works on Youtube because the Dolby Digital audio has been downmixed to Dolby Headphone which is 2 channels, which is why this vid works best with stereo headphones. This will help prove why gaming amps like the Astro Mixamp are so popular for gamers who wear headsets. You don't need crappy 5.1 headsets that have multiple speakers in them. Any headphone/headset with just one driver on each side will do it's magic.
