  • Justin Bieber!

  • I have to do a solo on this in a few months :)

  • @1401JSC Show some respect. He died from gas poisoning yes but not in a gas oven. Don't leave your filthy comments around they degrade the human race.

  • @1401JSC Try getting your facts right in future.

  • Its beautiful. But the rhythm they sing is off. They are inadvertently accenting the off beat so it has a sort of bass ackwards feel to it.

  • look at their glasses :D great!

  • Warlock, oh sorry ,I mean Phillip Hesletine.

  • Wonderful. Need more be said?

  • The Britten version is better than this.

  • Have you heard this song by Sting, from his latest album ' If on a winters night ' ? Also very special and beautiful. It is indeed a lovely song. Great composer, Peter Warlock, rather underestimated outside the UK ( I live in Holland ).

  • I just love Peter Warlock's music! I think this is the sweetest Christmas carol I've ever heard.

  • Lovely. I really like Warlock.

Not trying to be insulting or anything (really), but do they have a specific model of glasses they have to wear? They all look the same.

  • @FR665XN

I think perhaps it has to do that the boys board and probably the same optometrist looks after them. Also, it might've been the trend for that year. Certainly smaller glasses with plastic lenses were not fashionable until at least 1995. :-)

  • Thanks, you're probably right. It certainly gives a sense of uniformity. ; )

  • excellent singing in a very hard song.

  • Well this is nice, and excellent singing of course, but for me it doesn't touch the haunting quality of Britten's extraordinary music

Thanks for putting it up :)

  • Sorry.

I want to find a Video,I saw it about 3 years ago.

I remember it named "boy choir at Christmas"

it's about a boychoir practise singing"once in royal david's city"

a boy named Tom was chosen to sing at Christmas,I still remenber the leader told another 9 year old boy that"Tom have waited for the chance for 3 years"

but now I can not find it,I want to see it very much ! help me please!

  • I believe that the video you are referring to is of the Canterbury Cathedral Choir ( with Dr David Flood, master of the Cathedral choristers and Director of Music). Yes, it is a wonderful look 'behind the scenes' of all the boys auditioning for the solo part. Unfortunately, the video is no longer available on YouTube. :( However, I believe it is available through the Canterbury Cathedral gift shop online as part of a Christmas video series. :) I hope this helps.

  • I met Mr. Flood and some of the boys that were on that video...and some more that werent. They were all very nice and kind.

  • Brilliant performance! I had only known the Britten before, this is excellent too.

Is anyone here familiar with Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Love Bade Me Welcome"? Some of the chords, especially the organ ones at the beginning, sound exactly like the opening chords of that piece...

  • Yes, I immediately thought of RVW at the beginning of this piece. I dont think it's enough to "convict" Warlock, though.

  • nice glasses!

  • We, or rather the girls and ladies of our choir, are doing the equally fine Britten setting of Balulalow at our forthcoming 9-lessons-&-carols service next week. But I have to say the Warlock setting is very charming and wonderfully sung here. We do Warlock too, but it's "Where Riches is Everlastingly" which I like coz I gotta solo verse. When I listen to settings like this Balulalow I think to myself what a pity the sod topped himeslf so early on. He had so much potential/ability.

  • "What a pity the sod topped himself so early on." Haha, I wish Americans spoke like that! But agreed- I wish he'd lived longer.

  • This is the same year I was a choirboy.

  • I've heard this version before. They perform it beautifully!

  • The Warlock setting preceded the Britten, and likely Britten would have thought very highly of the wonderful songs and other music of Warlock (Heseltine), who like Britten had a great respect for early English music and poetry.

    This performance is superb.

  • Very British!

  • Yes, harumph!

  • i think that's it's a bit late!although it's very good

  • They sing it well, of course, but I wouldn't mess with Britten's arrangment. His was already perfection.

  • Perfection.
