for all the VMI cadets dogging on the Citadel, VMI is a great school and i respect the cadets there, but you really have no idea what goes on in this institution, things you couldn't imagine, this place can be a dark place for some people.
@h124240897 ur wrong at the CITADEL it sucks cause vmi has rat year which only lasts 3 months but knob year at the CITADEL is 9 months! So u are wrong.
First, of all, this is nothing but a short video...the 4th Class system lasts for 9 months. I can guarantee you that for all of you slackbags trying to compare programs based on this snippett, have no idea what it entails.
It does bring back memories. I see the cadre in front pointing back towards the barracks....I can hear them now..."Get the $#$@$% out of my school. You dont want to be here do you? It's okay, Susie RottenCrotch will take you back!" Casual Cat '95
Hey, I'm all for celebrating the experience, but damn ... kind of takes the edge off that whole "Christ, this is it" uncertainty of reporting as a Knob, when you've already seen hell wk on youtube. (sigh)
GAYYYY GO TO VMI FOR A REAL MILITARY EXPERIENCE. Or go here and see how long it takes to knock one of these whiney sons a bitches out. cute white gloves with a tshirt. lol i guess i just dont understand the cid...
im not sure what is goin on here, but i plan on going here for track, and this just motivates me like no other! i would like to hear from people who whent here so give me some insight. thanks!
nice to know its not just us norwich guys who have to put up with this kind of shit. citadel west point vmi, annapolis texas a and m all do something similar
Facka you're just ignorant because you don't know why these programs are designed the way they are. This is controlled chaos on the cadres part. The "civilian" students are learning how to act, make decisions and function during chaos. They're training to be military officers, or be part of the program while they attend the Citadel. As for the Gas Chamber, what's not to agree on? A panicked man is a dead man. It's also to give you confidence that the gear you carry is functional/works.
when i hear people talking shit about military colleges i remember why i choose to go to one. So i don't become one of those people who know nothing about leadership, dicipline, respect, and HONOR. Go Citadel
It teaches you to keep your composure and bearing in a stressful situation. Wow, doesn't take a genius to see that. I dont want your brain-dead offspring polluting my school anyways.
thats where you're right and more strikingly wrong. Yes, someone did do this to us years ago, and yes we in turn did it, and yes future generations will do the same. But thats not because we would feel injustice if other classes didn't get the treatment we did, its because this is a tried and true method of instilling discipline. This was part of the experience that bettered us and made us who we are. the real injustice in our eyes would be if the new cadets were not afforded the same system.
Again, i think there´s better ways (different true methods) to make people understand why discipline its important, of course im not some liberal who believes students should be hug and kiss like spoiled little kids. but this, again, its pointless and makes no sense sorry i just dont agree with you.
Like i will never agree with the "gas chamber" in boot camp. Its just stupid.
to be honest, the bottom line is that until you go through a system like this and experience what it does for you, you can never truly know the direction and measure of its efficacy. it is both incredibly rude and presumptuous to demean and comment disparagingly on an experience that you know nothing about other than a video you see on youtube.
@fackafacka- What you posted 1 month ago here is nothing but a bunch of damn bullshit. You gotta be fucking kidding me. None of this is "pointless". Oh, and don't even *go* there on the gas chamber. One look at that and I can tell you've never been in one. "Its just stupid." Right. Go ahead and tell the Joint Chiefs of Staff their service branches can all drop gas mask training, we don't need it anymore. I guess our guys will just figure it out on the spot when they get gassed, huh?
@fackafacka This teaches you to function and make sense out of chaos. If this was pointless we wouldn't do it. I wouldn't trade my knob year for anything and all the things I learned from my cadre, who were the best of the best. So unless you go through something like this, you're not expected to get it, so I'm not surprised you think it's pointless. But I assure you it's not.
Haha..I have a brother who goes to the Citdel. I go to MMA. Let me tell you,A parents association makes all the difference on the hardships of cadet life. When we compare storys of our orientation I usually just end up being quite. His was an orientation to be proud of. Mine..isn't usually worth mentioning to people. However; One difference worth mentioning is the amount of cleaning done at MMA compared to the Citadel. Sure the Knobs may have the shiniest brass. But we have the cleanest rooms.
lol, with that music playing in the background, I would have ran up to one of the guys standing in the formation and been like "WELCOME TO THA JUNGLE BABY, YOUR GONNA DIE!!!!" hehe
Yut! lol no problem! But its true, military colleges are dieing off, u have mothers of America running the schools now, mommy and daddy needs to let these kids grow up and stop suckling on the tit! Anyway, we could go on and on about this. You take things easy brother knob! Let me know if u got the ring! Stay Moto!
u compare our 2 month cruise to 9 months of hell? Please dont, like i said I went to both colleges and merchant marine schools do not even begin to compare what these guys go through. There are very handful of us that goes to merchant marine school could survive ratline, knob year, fish year or even rookdom! So please, get ur head out of ur ass quasi-military school (merchant mariners)!
to the comments below. VMI, citadel, ta&m, & norwich understands the fundamentals of making men. something that maritime college USED to understand. Military colleges are a dieing breed. And dont dare ridicule to those cadre who gave up their time to make men! The cadre who fell is a brother!
I go to NY maritime & this is to those that goes to all maritime school. There is NOTHING not even remotely close to what VMI, Citadel, TA&M cadets go through. Its great to have school pride but lets not begin to compare. An Army Ranger who went to VMI for his commission said the ratline was the hardest thing he has ever done in his life! I went to norwich for 2 yrs before i went to NYM. And rookdom was a joke compared to what rats and knobs have to go through!

wow....dont even talk...all these "wannabe" schools like the citadel and VMI try and mimic West point but clearly, your leadership techniques are crap.
You have no room to talk based on the minimal experience that you have at your school. I am a VMI cadet, class of 2010. Given that both VMI and the Citadel each have been around for well over 100 years, I know for a fact that they are mimicking nobody. They both have their own traditions that you are clearly not aware of and have shown this through your ignorance. You have been at your school for 2 months, know your place. You have learned nothing about leadership yet.
Learn your place before you lecture on leadership from your weak and once-proud school. Get your chin in and STRAIN cause you aren't good enough to go to VMI OR the Citadel.
its for learning to keep your composure under extremem pressure. most of you merchant marines would crack under the stress of this for nine months. Oh god, at sea for two months facing the perilous water swells!!! how do you guys cope with it? you're a joke to military colleges.
i have to say that you all look stupid. I can say that having gone through MUGdom at Maine Maritime Academy. What purpose does that honestly serve. At least everything that we do will serve to make us better mariners and may actually save somebody's life someday.
You are all missing the point. Quit worrying about "who has the toughest system" because it doesn't fucking matter.
Get your mind and body ready for combat. THAT is what matters. Don't fool yourself into thinking that you are 'hard' because some 20 year old kid yelled at you, beat you, made you do pushups, or whatever.
There is a reason why Marines groan upon hearing their platoon commander is from USNA/Citadel/VMI, etc. Douchebags like the ones leaving comments infra are why.
A&M is a joke I was in their Corps of Cadets for 2 years and then I came to The Citadel and graduated in 3...The Citadel does make A&M look like a joke...I can remember wishing I was still at A&M when I was hanging from my 1st sgts full press while holding my rifle with my knees...and I'm proud to wear the band of gold
Look, VMI, The Citadel, A&M, Norwich, VTCC, NGCSU, we're all SENIOR military colleges, and all go through a unique system, that no one will ever understand. I'm tired of hearing fighting about it all on Youtube, come on. The schools purpose is to train LEADERS of discipline, and honor. Just quit complaining saying who is from a tougher school. No one on here who went to VMI went to A&M, and no one from A&M went to The Citadel, etc. All are tough. All are good. Period.

You're forgeting all of the maritime colleges. We're regimented too, and we do the same stuff. we deserve credit for what we do. plus we go to sea for two months every year. you have to give props to Maine Maritime, Mass Maritime Suny Maritime, and Texas maritime. maybe not so much Cali maritime though
I've met kids from Mass Maritime, they're all fat and come into MY school and tell me they're experience is tougher. What a joke maritime schools are.
dude....texas a&m is joke....and you know it. dont try to come on to youtube and act like you guys have any sort of challenge at a "military college" that is identical to any other university in the country.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A&M is made up of mostly civilian students and is the 4th largest university in the nation, but it was born as an all-male military college and stayed that way until 1967. The Corps of Cadets is the largest uniformed body of students in the nation and more Aggies served in WWII than West Point and Annapolis combined. Also, you have no idea what goes on in the Corps.....i do.....i also know what goes on at other military colleges as i have friends there......trust me, A&M is the toughest, I know
And in the Corps of Cadets, this video would not be the same.......those knobs, or fish as we call them, would be on their faces while getting a new asshole ripped
The Citadel is the only military college that has a 4th class system that lasts the entire year. you guys act hard, but no one believes you. ive talked to A&M guys and heard their stories...its a joke. great boots though!!!!
People that have been through Marine Corps OCS say that fish year in the Corps at A&M is the most challenging thing they have ever done. And from what I see in this video, you guys obviously do not know how to train.
You aren't going through this. Start talking shit when you get some scars on your body and after if, by some miracle of god, someone shakes your hand on recognition day.
Rock on with your knobs and cadre and such. It makes me want to touch my happy parts!!! Boo Hoo on what anyone but us thinks about this. If you haven't done it, then keep your mouth shut and your eyes open. Your right, no one really cares but us and that is all that really matters to me anyway.
As a Graduate, this video brings back memories, but it has no place on U tube for non Grads to witness. For those who say "OH my God", I say go on with your life, only a few could tollerate and thrive in this type of environment.
There's nothing wrong with video of Cadre yelling at a bunch of knobs. I think it's great that this stuff is posted. It brings back memories for lots of us.
If some liberal pansy thinks it's gay, so what? What we do should be remembered as it is - not as it should have been, and not even as we remember it, but just as it was.
Besides, the footage in the Lords of Discipline doesn't look so different from this - at least this is real.
I am astounded to find this on the net. There have always been cadets that have trouble using better judgement, but to post what should obviously be a part of the school that remains at the school. This saddens me to know that members of todays corps have such poor judgement and forsight. Echo '87
97 Grad says: Why do ya'll "document" this? Better left to memory for those been there; and unpleasant suprise for those yet to experience. Back in the old corps. . .
But seriously, I'm dissapointed to see all this El Cid stuff on youtube.
As a generalized comment on all Citadel clips (and not just this one in particular): It cheapens the mystery, and makes the school look gay. If it was in doubt, you do have permission to use better judgement. Exceptions to my comment would be officially sanctioned performances / events that paint the school in a positive light.
The opposite: Bringing discredit -- an Alumni pull that Jenkins takes seriously. Email it privately to your classmates or whatever --but get this crap off the net.
oh man this was one of the better parts of knob year so far. this, the beach house, and hell night, i fucken loved every single moment of how it was presented. hell night was a literary masterpiece, and really had you feeling like you were part of the tradition that's so much bigger than yourself. it was truly adrenaline pumped and epic, like watching yourself on the set of a movie production.
I'm at VMI and it's tough, but I can't say anything negative against Citadel training because I haven't been through it. But our cheerleaders can throw it down, there's photographic proof of that awesomeness.
I remember the days of the CofC girls being our cheerleaders...Yes, VMI was roughly on par with El Cid for a Fourth Class System when I was a knob almost a decade ago. I fail to understand people who go to A&M and Tech and Norwich where there are over 30,000 regular day students or a significant day student demographic in Norwich's case. All of that, to me, is silly: if you are going to go to a military school, go to a military school.
Norwich used to be a true military college. Actually, it still has the designation "The Military College of Vermont." I hear you, though. Having civilians on campus takes away the true HOOAAH experience. I have no regrets going there. I'm proud of my Alma Mater as you should be proud of yours.
Why would anyone want to go there now? I heard they're even putting locks on the doors. All it is now is Wofford with uniforms. I hurt for my beloved alma mater
hahahahahahhaaha, we call it a knob year because it actually last all year. I sure wish we were done by january. but mr. football player we kicked your ass so bad maybe you should be practicing that and messin around on youtube
I think this is when the knobbies come back from the end of Hell Week party at the beach house. Great video, nothing better than racking the shit out of some knobs!
The yelling/screaming bit makes a habit out of thought and action under stress. Most cadets don't undertand the 'point' until well after graduation...if ever. They just do it because "well, that's what was done to ME!"
for all the VMI cadets dogging on the Citadel, VMI is a great school and i respect the cadets there, but you really have no idea what goes on in this institution, things you couldn't imagine, this place can be a dark place for some people.

that one guy tripping at the beginning simply states how VMI's cadre are far superior than the citadel's....
JFlip713 2 months ago
Yeah the hardest freshmen year is definitely VMI and Citadel, where VMI has it harder and Citadel has it better.
Let me explain the statement above in case some people took it the wrong way
Citadel enjoys a lot of things ( privilege, better stuff... etc ) that VMI doesn't have...and VMI sometimes wish we something that Citadel has.
I.E. I want to wear civi on the weekends
I want a bigger band room
I want a bigger campus
Life sucks at Citadel, but it sucks more at VMI.

We're regimented too, and we do the same stuff. we deserve credit for what we do. plus we go to sea for two months every year. you have to give props to Maine Maritime, Mass Maritime Suny Maritime, and Texas maritime. maybe not so much Cali maritime though

In one breath you say we look stupid- in the next breath you say you do the same stuff...

I've met kids from Mass Maritime, they're all fat and come into MY school and tell me they're experience is tougher. What a joke maritime schools are.

Texas A&M Corps of Cadets makes The Citadel look like a picnic on the beach
kevb314 3 years ago
dude....texas a&m is joke....and you know it. dont try to come on to youtube and act like you guys have any sort of challenge at a "military college" that is identical to any other university in the country.

He's right, I'm a fish in the A&M corps right now. People have no idea how much shit we go through.

The Citadel is the only military college that has a 4th class system that lasts the entire year. you guys act hard, but no one believes you. ive talked to A&M guys and heard their stories...its a joke. great boots though!!!!
cop1987 3 years ago 2
People that have been through Marine Corps OCS say that fish year in the Corps at A&M is the most challenging thing they have ever done. And from what I see in this video, you guys obviously do not know how to train.

ElCidman1:
1. That's "tolerate" - glad to see the new Corps can spell.
2. So what if some non-cadet (or non-ex-cadet) sees this? Holy crap, you guys are brittle.
3. Particularly since "Lords of Discipline" has almost this exact footage.
4. Almost all the comments are from alumni or cadets. Why? Because no-one cares except for us & pre-knobs.
5. When I graduated, being a cadet meant having balls - which tells you something else about me. Hmmm... what could it be???
oldcorps96 4 years ago 2
As a Graduate, this video brings back memories, but it has no place on U tube for non Grads to witness. For those who say "OH my God", I say go on with your life, only a few could tollerate and thrive in this type of environment.
elcidman1 4 years ago
There's nothing wrong with video of Cadre yelling at a bunch of knobs. I think it's great that this stuff is posted. It brings back memories for lots of us.
If some liberal pansy thinks it's gay, so what? What we do should be remembered as it is - not as it should have been, and not even as we remember it, but just as it was.
Besides, the footage in the Lords of Discipline doesn't look so different from this - at least this is real.
oldcorps96 4 years ago
I am astounded to find this on the net. There have always been cadets that have trouble using better judgement, but to post what should obviously be a part of the school that remains at the school. This saddens me to know that members of todays corps have such poor judgement and forsight. Echo '87

97 Grad says: Why do ya'll "document" this? Better left to memory for those been there; and unpleasant suprise for those yet to experience. Back in the old corps. . .
zeelee29 4 years ago
But seriously, I'm dissapointed to see all this El Cid stuff on youtube.
As a generalized comment on all Citadel clips (and not just this one in particular): It cheapens the mystery, and makes the school look gay. If it was in doubt, you do have permission to use better judgement. Exceptions to my comment would be officially sanctioned performances / events that paint the school in a positive light.

3 Posts in Reverse Order. . .
The opposite: Bringing discredit -- an Alumni pull that Jenkins takes seriously. Email it privately to your classmates or whatever --but get this crap off the net.
zeelee29 4 years ago
My brother goes there, and from what I can tell, the school is gay. If it isn't you shouldn't need to censure things to make it appear otherwise.
These guys aren't even in the military yet--its a big game.

oh man this was one of the better parts of knob year so far. this, the beach house, and hell night, i fucken loved every single moment of how it was presented. hell night was a literary masterpiece, and really had you feeling like you were part of the tradition that's so much bigger than yourself. it was truly adrenaline pumped and epic, like watching yourself on the set of a movie production.

I'm at VMI and it's tough, but I can't say anything negative against Citadel training because I haven't been through it. But our cheerleaders can throw it down, there's photographic proof of that awesomeness.
armormaster 4 years ago
I remember the days of the CofC girls being our cheerleaders...Yes, VMI was roughly on par with El Cid for a Fourth Class System when I was a knob almost a decade ago. I fail to understand people who go to A&M and Tech and Norwich where there are over 30,000 regular day students or a significant day student demographic in Norwich's case. All of that, to me, is silly: if you are going to go to a military school, go to a military school.
AnbaKyrillos 4 years ago
Norwich used to be a true military college. Actually, it still has the designation "The Military College of Vermont." I hear you, though. Having civilians on campus takes away the true HOOAAH experience. I have no regrets going there. I'm proud of my Alma Mater as you should be proud of yours.

The yelling/screaming bit makes a habit out of thought and action under stress. Most cadets don't undertand the 'point' until well after graduation...if ever. They just do it because "well, that's what was done to ME!"
