South Vietnamese civilians never, I will repeat it, never ran to NVA/VC for safety, they always ran to ARVN/US military for safety and support. No matter what happened Vietnamese children always ran to US for protection never to NVA.

@TheJamestr good point...most of the soldiers (not just half) were conscripts. it was either the military or jail. they weren't rich and couldnt get deferments (cheney) or places in over-staffed national guard units (w. bush). the enlisted were mostly poor to middle class guys.
and, on a tactical level, militarily, they did a helluva job. never lost a battle. but the leadership was screwed up, and never had a STRATEGY to tell the soldiers and public why they were in vietnam.

Listen up people, South Vietnamese civilians were always the object of attack by NVA/VC and US/ARVN reacted to those attacks. South Vietnamese civilians never, I will repeat it, never ran to NVA/VC for safety, they always ran to ARVN/US military for safety and support. Get it, we were protecting the people of South Vietnam against terrible aggression and terror by the North Vietnamese. No matter what happened Vietnamese children always ran to US for protection never to NVA.

What about the Hue massacre(during TET offensive),where the Vietcong killed 5000 south vietnamese civilians, a large proportion of which were burried alive. Unlike My Lai massacre, which was a spontaneous incident, committed by green combat troops, this was an ACTUAL genocide as the orders came from the Vietcong high command. @pobinr Vietnam war lasted from 1930-1984, that is 54 years. The US was there from 1965-1973, the war was going on no matter what because for Vietnamese it was not about independence only but communists were attempting to rule all the Vietnamese especially in the South where communism was unwanted.

They attacked around 200 villages and towns killing untold numbers of civilians. One city, Hue, the cultural center of Vietnam, their Kyoto, NVA murdered 6,000 civilians, many buried alive with their hands tied behind their backs. SVietnam did not want communism and fought for 25 years to be free of it, we helped but 9 yrs.

@pobinr - The Khmer Rouge (Pol Pot gained power in 1975) did use the bombings as a political campaign - however they would never had been able to overthrow the government without NVA military intervention and financial support from China.
Cambodia was destabilised when the NVA invaded - and Pol was only overthrown upon deciding to march troops across the border and attack Vietnamese villages. *BTW - I am not American

Look at the attrocities of the Vietnam War, My Lai was one of the worst. It was mass murder conducted by a unit of the U.S. Army on March 16, 1968 of 347 to 504 unarmed citizens in South Vietnam, all of whom were civilians and a majority of whom were women, children, and elderly people. The US was convicted of illegally invading Vietnam by the UN. Do your research before making comments people.

Hue the NVA killed 6,000 civilians in one incident, many buried alive. If you really do your research you will realize the communist murdered millions on command, US green troops reacted badly when their favorite Sgt was killed by Women and Children using booby traps and grenades.

The British fire bombing of Dresden alone killed a quarter million people. The nukes in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were horrible, but it's interesting that you bash the US for this, but completely forget about the millions upon millions of people killed by the Japanese.. Well, you should learn that the U.S. did not lose The Vietnam war, yes we were no longer able to save South Vietnam but that's only because our leaders were stupid and believe North Vietnam when they said they would no longer continue the war with South Vietnam, and as soon as the U.S. troops were far enough away they broke that pact taking South Vietnam before the U.S. had time to respond.

why don't you count the number of south vietnamese killed by north vietnamese? also some of the north vietnamese civilian was helping building the ho chi ming trail or other north vietnamese buildings, army supplies, etc. So I would kill them too.

of course he'd kill the civilians if they were helping the North Vietnamese. that would be almost the same as a civilian leading Americans into a NVA trap, either way is helping the North Vietnamese wouldn't you kill the civilians? Remember that the Viet Cong would pretend to be civilians and if some civilians were doing something suspicious I'd believe they were Viet Cong guerillas.
