This is nowhere near traditional American Folk; this almost exclusively Alternative Country, and if anything finds it's influences in vintage era Country. The musician himself would be categorized as folk-indie. Maybe you should reflect your criticism inwards and realize that it is you who should expand their musical taste beyond that of well-known artists.
