I agree that this copyright stuff is messing people up. I mean a lot of the stuff that gets taken down is only part of the work in it's original form. For instance I have a lot of fandub stuff on my channel. One of them was taken down simply because of the picture. What we don't get to have fun as fans and put our own voices to a video we love? That's messed up. If anything it helps promote the original. Same thing with AMVs, review videos, tribute videos, and videos that use parts of songs.

We need to change the Copywrite laws in this country. If the copywrites were Patents they would become public property after 14 years. But, a song recorded in 1963, way past the time when the artist can make any money from them, the record companies are still holding the rights to old songs and, apparently, making money on them. If you want to us it for your video, you can't unless you pay them.

Correct. Copyright laws are more for corporations and not the artists.

On that note, as part of a course i did years ago (web design) the tutor said if we wanted to do a site on someone famous, we had to contact them for permission. Fair enough... one girl contacted the company regarding Robbie Williams - and said it would cost £15,000! This for a website that would never be published outside class, a college project.

I doubt Robbie would have seen any of that 15k either...

What happened to the point that we're giving credit to the original people who did the work to make the original? Heck I've seen covers taken down simply because it "sounds too much like the original" or "it's such and such's song so you can't sing it".

The problem is not with Copyright but with how Copyright laws are being enforced. The whole reason Copyright laws were created in the first place is so one person can't take credit for or make money off of someone elses ideas. Unless you're a partner you don't make money off your videos and as long as you're not making money and crediting the original creators there should be no Copyright violations.

@thequeensxi exactly my point. Same with covers of songs, fandubs over TV shows and cartoons. It all helps advertise the original. Youtube's like the free music player of the web and #1 stop to check out stuff before you go buy it (like movies and TV shows).

The answer is to just not use copyrighted songs in your YouTube vids. Cut the records companies out altogether and use the music of independent artists. There are whole sites out there dedicated to hosting royalty-free music. Use some of that and support those artists instead.

But you're right: suspending/deleting accounts is absurd and extremist. YouTube had better shape up or Vimeo will replace 'em.

I have never understood why the record companies fight technology like this. If you want to do anything, require a credit in the video with a link to their official site or something. Heck, youtube could do it automatically. It's like a free commercial when your music appears in a video. This is like Napster all over again.
