I think CBC's dramas are getting better .. and their documentaries are always first rate. Their situation comedies do tend to stereotype certain groups, I have to agree with rybot on that. I think we should keep it around.
I'm an ACTRA member/former casting director. I don't know how many times an American actor was cast for a supporting role because s/he was a friend of the American producer - filming up here on a co-pro tax credit.
I always try to support my ACTRA peers. But are you really lamenting the threat of loss of Canadian culture or the threat of cuts to tax credit incentives that bring in your American employers - cuts that will strengthen Canadian culture by making our film industry stronger and less American.
Apparently that's a matter of opinion. For example I don't appreciate Harper's lying about the statistical occurrance of gun-related violence by people on bail. The CPC ignored my request for supporting evidence and StatsCan, Juristat and Toronto Police have different information. I thought Harper was about "accountability" but he cheated Canadians over and over again, misdirection, lies and false promises. If that's awesome...
Here again people are being misdirected "Support Canadian Culture" while they really want you to "Support CBC" and not just CBC but in particular shows like Corner Gas, I doubt Peter Mansbridge's job is at stake or we might see him in this video and the tone would be about "supporting canadian journalism". I don't watch "corner gas" I don't subscribe to the self-imposed Canadian stereotype and I don't want to pay for it either. CBC News is one thing, but "corner gas" fuck it.
CTV or CBC? I have no idea. I don't even turn on the tube except for the news and I just get Public Access channels on my rabbit ears. So.. I have no problem supporting journalism, but why should I care about Canadian television when I don't even watch it, I don't watch American television either. I really don't watch television at all. lol.
My advice to other Canadians who do worry about American invasion of our television.... R-e-a-d-A-B-o-o-k! and watch youtube ;)
600% agree with you on that. that is what I do in fact. but this remedy is too far fetched for the time being, still TV is the top mass media and it is important to have publicly funded Canadian programming which is crucial for cultural integrity and sovereignty of Canada.
Unfortunately Harper got in again. I can't understand how Canadians could let this happen. Reminds me of when Bush was voted in for a second term Shame on everyone who didn't bother to vote!
These people aren't rallying in support of Canadian Culture. They are rallying in support of the CBC an icon of Canadian Culture. An abstract symbol representative of an inner emotive state which they fail to quantify but which is illuminated through symbolism. It is one of the main strings politicians and marketers pull on to manipulate people. The speakers in this video were employees of the CBC and are acting out of self-preservation using "culture" to garner support.
Put it online maybe I'll watch it. But I don't watch stuff like "corner gas" or most make believe stuff without a philosophical concept at least. Actually I'm not really into the idea of paying for it unconditionally either. Or the idea of a Canadian Culture, or a personal identity of that sort. Sounds like the making of nationalism, personality disorder and prejudice. If that's what kind of country this is, I will move to Germany. I think they may have gotten past that...
This is Lee, Ariel's mum aka arielsmum, not Ariel FYI .. our channel logins are connected due to a glitch.

CBC sucks on every level possible. Except that their HD quality is damn fine. It's just the content that blows.

Re my earlier post. Headline from Playback mag (playbackonline (dot) ca)
Producers angered over tax-rebate changes
Surprise! The tax man is now capping claims on producer fees at 10%, down
from as much as 20%

Anyone out there remember Wayne and Shuster?
Did that count as Canadian culture. I'll never forgive CBC for those guys!

I don't really know a lot about Canadian culture except that they are Frencher than Americans, and more accustomed to cold weather.
