I saw all of the battles between Flying Paster and Bid. Great days at Santa Anita. Poor Paster, he probably thought everytime he saw Bid. "Him ! Again !
When they talk of the all time greats they never mention the Bid. Big mistake. I was a Flying Paster fan and wanted so badly for him to beat Bid and Delp. But after seeing their first couple match ups, all it did was make me appreciate the Bid. He was a freak machine and extremely underrated when they talk all time greats.
No one before or since has been a Secretariat and on his and their best day, they are all out-fighting each other for 2nd place. He's the best 3-year old I've ever seen. The best 2-year old is hands -down Raise a Native - hands-down, and anyone who knows racing and was lucky enough to see him race will say the same thing. I have friends on the West coast who tell me that Landaluce was and would have been very special, but sadly we'll never know.
I was and still am a Spectacular Bid fan and agree with one poster who said his 4-year old season is something that may never be matched. As far as the Belmont, and beyond the safety pin - Franklin fell into the spell that has capyured a few jockeys that have been fortunate enough to be running for the triple crown. THey actually believe that their horse is the equal or better of Secretariat and they make the most astounding unfortunate early moves that a jockey could make. next post...
His track record stood for 27 years until they replaced it with synthetic. His performance in this race is breathtaking. The Bid's 1980 race year is the best single race year ever
Thanks for the clip,cf, I remember this race well. It was Bid's California debut and all did not appear rosey the first 1/4 mile as Shoemaker was riding him hard to keep up. But around the 3/8 pole he took a strong hold of the bit and went on to a commanding victory. This distance (7 furlongs) was Flying Paster's best too, but Bid just blew his doors off the final 1/8 of a mile.
Poor Flying Paster ... here he tried the maneuver of trying to stay ahead of Bid ... just could never rival the Bid's kick in the stretch, even when Paster came running late after a 44 half-mile in the Santa Anita Derb Bid still outkicked him.
I was at this race and bet on Paster
