Too much education can be a bad thing these days. If you have too much education or certifications then you will be considered over qualified and probably require a very high salary. Companies can save money buy hiring a lesser educated person for less money.
Hi Chris, and greetings from up I-5 a tad! Your comments about MS Certification is very interesting and I have reason to agree but with a few caveats. I've run my own software companies since 1995, interviewed hundreds of people personally, and screened thousands of CVs. When someone presents their formal education I never assume that this means that they deeply *know* the things such an education represents, but rather that they've been successful at passing tests.
@Borisyoch instead of see ya later, like people usually say - beceause and he uses electronic stuff, he says "e ya later" the "e" standing for "electronic"
don't waste your money, you don't need microsoft certification to get a job. you want more education? get a technical degree in something like computer science or engineering.
I disagree. I run my own IT corporation (software, design, multimedia) and we don't even consider Microsoft certified professionals.
a) We use open platforms (Linux, PHP, mySQL)
b) Microsoft certified professionals are usually overpaid, snobby nerds, who work on closed platform that only has like 10-15% market share
I think having certification in programming or any other IT field is a good thing, but I just don't like MS professionals. Worked with a few (worked... past tense).
Not always the case. I also hope you are qualified to be giving such advice. If so, great work, if not - people why are you asking some random person for life changing advice - think about it.
If not available then get MCSE training etc paid for by the company you work for.
Don't pay out of your own pocket. It's very expensive and without work experience backing up an industrial qualification you'll probably end up in a junior role if you're lucky, meaning national minimum wage. With a few thousand to pay back.
hahaha.. bullshit! a piece of paper with "certz" isent worth the paper its printed on... if it is you don't want to work for that company hireing anyway... ANYONE can get a certification
@SirLawlDuck He has a wife...and he has more money than you do...and he's most likely smarter...and more popular...haha poor you, no wonder you're "trolling".
the problem with Microsoft Certs is that most people find these cracked practice test programs and just take them over and over until the can pass them. Then they go and take the real test and pass with flying colors. So we have another "Paper Certified Tech" with no actual experience and they totally suck as technical professionals. Certs are great but actual hands on experience is better.
@TheTechInAllThings then there are people who have exceptional troubleshooting skills, problem solving,decision-making, and even ARE experienced in performing most of the technician tasks,
BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
may fail the test simply because they didn't know some useless questions that were merely thrown in to satisfy creator's need to prove they are the "geek-y-est".
I am damn good and would've failed the practice a+ because of some small questions despite knowing most of the important stuff
I think getting a hands on experience should be more prioritized than just getting those certificates up in your resume. In fact those certificates requires you to have a hands on experience in that area.
Sorry Chris i dont fully agree with you on this, you have missed "experience", i started in a companys IT department when i was 18 on the phone at a service desk. I stuck with it and gained training and experience in various different roles, server management, desktop support, server management,SQL developer i'm 28 now and started my new job as a senior TDA for Business intelligence i got the because of my experience and achievements, not because of the grades on my CV. but HARD WORK DOES PAY OFF
I don't know if Chris will make a video about this..
But I really don't know what kind of direction I want to be going with my life I've dreamed about many things but in the end always found out that I don't qualify for those directions.
I really hope Chris can help me out with this.. since I'm stuck about this decision since high school 21 years old now having 2 diplomas I don't want to spend the rest of my life delivering newspapers and being online all day doing nothing productive.
I'm get Microsoft certified with an associates degree in IT. I plan to work directly for Microsoft or any large company such as HP, Sony, Dell, or a school and take as head of server support for any place that needs a server set up provider. All in all, I think my associates degree in IT and Microsoft certification will land me a job where I make some big dollar amounts.
I used to manage auto mechanics who had ASE certifications. Then I found out you could easily cheat to get certified or just buy the shirt patches. I see people on Craigslist who say they are certified (one even had a degree) and when I ask them basic computer questions they cannot answer them. I think it's going to be the same way with computer certifications if not already (a padded resume).
identical cvs (or resumes) except one has more certs? I would hire the one with more certs if thats all I had to go on. however interviewing both candidates might make me change my mind.
I like your videos keep up the work man I am going to share what I know soon on I do do tutorials on this channel but I like to do more also I have another channel that I like to do more than just tutorials since that is what I do on this account.
people, he said if all things were equal he would take the person with more certs, so if the position was down to 2 people, you, or you with more certs, who would you choose?
MS Certs are good, but there generally things that you get AFTER you've been in the workforce for 2-3 years. Prior to certification, I think you'd do well to build up your portfolio of applications. In many cases, that's enough proof that you know what you're doing. People can rote learn a bunch of cheat sheets to pass their exams and still fail in the real world.
What you know is more important than a grade. Back in 97 when I was in tech school I didn't really care what I got as a grade, but if I got something wrong I wanted to know what the correct answer was, or why I was wrong.
I must strongly disagree. The information provided by this individual from his bed, is only general. The nature of the "other education" is of paramount importance. For instance, when the IT job I was applying for went into the third round of interviews, my interests in amateur proctology combined with my (highly acclaimed) sculptures made entirely from human waste and my volunteer work at the Church Of Satan....didnt go over well with upper management. A pity. But learn from this.
Microsoft Certifications means you are a good little hoop jumper.
But I agree most HR departments are looking for key words and fluff.
But here is the real truth... If you have a ton of Microsoft Certifications that means you are spending the current company you are working for time studying for the certification and neglecting actual real work.
Back in 00 took every Mcert I could, finished them all up and went as far as even getting my (Cisco) CCNP... Everyone wanted a Degree around 00 so Certs were nearly worthless for my average expected salary. So... I went back into the military and did 5 more years. Now I'm out and in Med School. Odd how things work out.
Chris (in this video) looks like one of those "pay for chatting" webcam sluts. I mean the whole scenery just fits that description, the bed, the laptop, Chris' position on the bed, etc. :D
@Teldara That falls more on the employer not understanding who and what he really needs. Employers look more at if someone has went to school and if they have a degree in something instead of worrying about if the person can actually do the job or not. At the end of the day a degree is just a piece of paper. Its the skills they take that really matter. You should have been hired over a kid who only took a 10 hour course. Not getting that job maybe left you open for a better one somewhere else.
When it come's to I.T certification's, both experience and certifications should be used together, of course if you only have certification's then getting an entry job and starting from the bottom shouldn't be too hard.
I go to the only Microsoft certified high school in the world, and I'm a Microsoft Certified Application Specialist. As well as (not Microsoft) Comptia A+ certified. This coming year I will be given the chance to obtain 2 Cisco certs: CCNA (Cisco certified Network Associate) and CCENT (Cisco certified Entry level network technician) as well as Comptia Net+. And in my junior and senor year, I have the chance to obtain MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) as well as some Server 2008.
The funny thing is, the guy who did not know anything got the job because he knows the boss...or his dad or his friends mom who was his 3rd grade teacher who was also friends with the guys mom who plays bingo with your granny. or something like that.
If everything was equal between the two, I'd go with the person without certification. If the person without certification could accomplish the same thing, without the push of instructors, that shows major evidence of initiative, persistence, diligence, genuine interest, and the most important trait of all... PASSION. The chances of this person creating something worthwhile for your company are dramatically raised. On the other hand... People like this usually aren't the ones looking for jobs ;)
@thecinemaoferic Unfornately not all see it like that.... I am currently trying to get into the IT industry as I am tired of where I am now. I am finding it hard because even though I would have no problems in the jobs I am applying for, I am probably overlooked due to what I have on paper which is not alot. I am pretty confident that I shall find somewhere at some point...
@k1llmebill You'll find it, for sure. Just make sure that you stick with it and don't forget the power of networking, delightful acquaintances, and genuine friendship. I do hope you find your way successfully within your endeavors, sir/madam!
Neat video, Chris. Do you have a Microsoft Certification or for that matter any Mac Certification? You seem very knowledgeable and just wondering if you have either of these.
Too much education can be a bad thing these days. If you have too much education or certifications then you will be considered over qualified and probably require a very high salary. Companies can save money buy hiring a lesser educated person for less money.

It definitely depends on the certification itself. Being a "Microsoft Power User" doesn't mean you know how to program in C or Java, for example.
Something at least a MCP or higher do help with your salary when you do get that job.
Microsoft Certifications speak more than the various MBA programs (many of which frankly are not worth the paper they're printed on).

the test should be a do-or-die test.
Meaning it should be live, not on paper. or at least it should be both and the live portion should carry more weight on the grading scale.

No doubts that more education really helps you getting a job but we should forget that experience also really counts. :)

@t3st3 Experience counts even more.

You know... Chris, when I said I wanted to watch videos of youtubers on their bed, this is not what I meant.
