My grandmother has had that brand stockpiled in her house for years. The little button ones, and the long cylinders. I used to collect the blown ones when I was a little kid....lol
@AvatarOfAvatar No kidding! I'm an electrician myself, and it's extremely difficult to convince homeowners that they need a new panel if their Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic panels appear to be working without any problems. They don't understand that if a problem does occur, their panel may not protect them.
Scary thing is I used to live in a place with these pieces of shit... light fixture shorted out and melted the wires off of the socket one day, breaker never tripped.
@elgavilan2000 The stab lok design of Federal Pacific has been used in Canada for decades and is still sold new to this day under the "Federal Pioneer" brand. The stab lok panels and breakers meet CSA requirements and always have. Stab lok panels are extremely common in Canada. It would be weird for you to see, but we have stab lok AFCI breakers.
The main problem in the US must have been poor manufacturing. If it was the design itself, Canada should have had the same problems. But it didn't.
A friend of mine (his user name is RainJetSprinklers) has a Zinsco breaker panel and I also intentionally shorted an outlet in his garage to see if it would trip the breaker but it didn't. Got some pretty big sparks as well.
I should also mention that his house also has aluminum wiring (The house was built in 1972 from what I could gather).
Is it a ghetto house? I used to work on ghetto houses in Taylor Michigan off of Eureka Rd that had Zinsco breakers and aluminum wiring. We did a lot of rewires because these pieces of shit were shorting out ever other day!
That wire was probably well over 1300 degrees Fahrenheit (that's the flow temperature of brazing alloy used to braze copper lines used in air conditioning). Getting copper to glow orange is VERY hot!
I know of Zinsco's reputation. Us guys in the field nicknamed them Sit-n-Fry breakers. I have intentionally arced two poles together and the breaker STILL didn't trip!
Sylvania makes replacement breakers to fit the old Zinsco panels. As far as I know, they perform properly.
Did you even read the description?? The wire got hot because there were 60 amps of electricity running through it. The whirring sound was the load that they were putting on the circuit.

Hey. My house has these things. How do I safely disconnect the power to the panel so I can replace it?

ZInsco is garbage, one failed in my house yesterday after a socket short and almost burned the place down until a 110v socket link fused open

We call Zinsco's and FedPac's "Arc Welders"
It's hilarious when you hear customer say "There isnt a problem with our panel, we never trip any breakers"
Yeah.... no shit you dont trip any breakers

you should probably replace this crap ASAP and install battery-powered smoke alarms in each bedroom and floor NOW!
trucksoner 2 years ago
@trucksoner Code requires some states to install hard wired smoke alarms. My renovation this past spring brought this to my attention.

was this a phase to phase or phase phase to neutral (ground)?
kijifled2 3 years ago
Single phase 240V power. Opposing 120V poles directly contacted together. BIG sparks. Breaker did NOT trip.
