Yea... That's not 100% Effective. Assuming its an HDD and not an SSD, the data is still there. Sure, you controller and motor to spin the platters are dead, but, the disks are intact. A commercial agency could extract them, put them into some specialized hardware and retrieve their data. A degauser however, would pretty much take of the data on the disk for sure...

why would there be no way to get data from it? If you were to keep the disk stationary, and scan the disk with a moving head, you can read all of the data that has not been drilled in. You won't just plug it in and read it, but it is still very much possible.
