I 'm from E. KY and am tired of the land being destroyed. Do we have to destroy everything we touch? I am a conservative, right-winger republican. I have never even voted for a Democrat. I don't agree w/ the left on 99% of things but they are right on this and so is Ashley Judd. If the coal cannot be taken without raping the land, it doesn't need to be done. its funny how all the people who live away from the coal mining area are the ones protesting coal mining-lexington-california-an­d the march was in frankfurt ky. i'm confident that there has never been a coal mine in frankfurt ky. i'm also confident that 95% of the marchers were not from coal mining communites. wind-solar-tidal all these methods are fine for supplemental power but your not living in reality if you think they can replace coal-nuclear-or nat. gas.

@c8055 In Wyoming, they'll just start digging up open grasslands. Then when they're done they'll spend millions of dollars on reclamation to make it look natural again. Hell I've even seen some of the reclaimed land, you can't tell the difference between if, and land that was never mined.

Here's an idea Ms. Judd. Rather than bitching and moaning about a method of mining you actually go out and find a method of alternate mining that is economically feasible and safe for workers. Until then, stop giving us this ludicrous lip service. This is what I call "Press Makeup" It's just putting on a show to look good and for her to get her name out there.

How about no mining altogether? If our country would invest in research for Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Tidal, and Wave energy (all clean and renewable), we'd be independent of horrible coal mining, and dependence on middle eastern oil.

However, coal companies, oil companies in the like don't want to lose profits, so they impede upon this research, and utilization.

I work for a small oil company here in California. It is my opinion that we should have a 50/50 deal. 50% renewable. 50% non-renewable. Until investing in renewable resources becomes profitable, it will always be oil, coal, etc And as far as the non-renawble resources go, we should keep that here in America.

But in my opinion, putting profit over environmental security is simply greed.

By the way, my father, grandfather, and great grandfather were all underground coal miners and they respected the land where they were raised. You might not like to hear bad things about mountaintop removal, but no matter what excuse you give, it doesn't make it any less wrong.
