great video steve its a dream of many to play this game, glad to see someone made a version, i had gave up years ago hoping to play it.
wonder if the idea of the machine calling out to the player came from the few early arcade shooters that had on board speech synthesis, Astro blaster's demo mode calls on the player to take part in a battle.
It's only cheesy if you let the adult in you speak, my inner child is fully immersed when I watch The Last Starfighter ^_^. I like the reflection of you, it's like you're really in the cockpit of a Gunstar which did have glass in front of the pilot. I know it doesn't compare to modern standards but damn does it look cool, just like the movie :D. Thanks for the cool demonstration. :)
Wow that pretty awesome Steve thanks for putting this video up i was unaware of this actually existing plus having clips of the movie makes me want to watch it again. : )
I think if I played that, I'd soon be recruited by the Star League... to be the guy who cleaned the ships!
The film itself is quite cheesy. However, it does have an underdog quality due to the main character living in a trailer park and the early use of CGI.
Awesome find there. Last StarFighter is one of those special movies from back in the day that marked a progression forward in technology i.e. it's 2+ minutes of computer animation broke the current record for the most amount of 3d computer generated graphics. it beat the 1st movie to have computer generated 3D aka TRON. It held the record for a considerable amount of time too. Will definitely have to download and have a go - thanks.
@RetroGamerVX Yeah I remember all the press about the amout of computing power they put together so they could render one frame every couple of hours, so 2 minutes 20 seconds worth of graphics with the ray tracing/lighting they used, that's an long time to render. About 9 months worth from memory.
I must admit, I was really confused by the title of the video. I was thinking... of course it exists, it's on the NES! But here you're talking about the arcade game from the movie and that's a different story, lol.
I totally forgot about your videos after youtube updated the subscription box thing, so as I have a few hours of free time I'll have to watch all your videos I have missed =).

rhydermike 6 months ago
@rhydermike Yes, it was a bold attempt that seemed lacking in areas, which is what, as you say, makes it an underdog and why it's probably so loved.
I don't think I'd even get the cleanining position with my score ;o)

I gotta watch this movie again. I loved this when it came out. Great computer effects :)
Star Raiders II on the Atari 8-bit computers was originally supposed to be a Last Starfighter game.
This looks spot on fantastic. Wow.

It looks a bit like a filled in version of Star Wars!
But it's a good job they didn't recruit you as the last starfighter! The galaxy would have had no chance ^_-
