It may help present an artistic background to the book, as this art was taken from Mayan sources (painted depictions of the Popol Vuh, on pottery).

But this animation only covers the first two of the four books of the Popol Vuh, of which there are many translations.

I hope you enjoy both the animation and the book.

And the film was officially described as the Maya creation myth.

But a film describing the story of creation in the biblical book of Genesis would scarcely not be touted as a myth, although that's what it is

The Mayans were great sailors whose ships traveling from the western ocean to eastern and southern seas to the north in remotest ages. This is verbatim from Volume I of the Ramayana. Probably the easiest thing is to think that the most famous historian of ancient India was a consummate liar, but ... I just finished rewatching this version of the 'Popol Vuh".

I, too, taped it on VHS when it was broadcast on PBS. I love this story and the soundtrack. The animations from images on Maya pottery are spectacular. I wish it were available on DVD

My pleasure. My VHS recording of this (recorded from TV in the late 1980s on PBS) became corrupted and unviewable. I was able to obtain a VHS of this through an inter-library loan, and I did not have to endure any trials, such as spending an evening in the House of Knives. Good thing, too.
