hey, i'm getting this done in a couple months, so how bad is the pain? i'm assuming they gave you meds for the pain? what exactly did they give you for the pain? did they give you vicodin or what?
My nose was pretty unremarkable before and after the surgery, so I don't notice a difference. However, I also had a septoplasty (reshaping of the septum in the nose) at the same time, so I'm sure the shape of my nose is a little different.
I've also lost 20 but gained 15 prior to the operation as I'd be too thin otherwise. How much activity are you doing at the 6-8 week mark? Are you back at work? I miss work and I don't. I'd like to get back at the gym but it's too soon for me at week 4. I'm almost off the oxycodone and am thinking about driving again. Feeling antsy to have the whole damn thing behind me.
Once they let me eat eggs and tuna sandwiches at week 5, everything changed. I suddenly stopped losing weight and had tons of energy. Right now I feel pretty great, even if eating is a little difficult.
At 6-8 weeks, I didn't feel like there was much I couldn't do. I don't run yet, because it feels like my teeth clank together, but I swam some last week.
I went back to work after 3 weeks, but it was tough for the first week or so. I never took painkillers after I left the hospital, though.
How's your swelling? My upper (9 ml forward)/lower (8 ml back) operation was aug 7, 08. I still have about 30% swelling. My speech is more garbled than yours but I'm still wearing the surgical braces. They come off next week. Regardig sleep... I started taking ambien and am finally getting 8-10 hours of sleep. I might wake up for a few minutes but can go right back to sleep.
My swelling was never too bad, and I think it was completely gone after a month. The hardest part for me on week 4 was being tired of the liquid diet. Now, at 2 months, my only problems are that I can't open my mouth terribly wide and I can only eat soft things. Hopefully they'll let me start eating more after my appointment tomorrow.
I don't know if I'll post again. I'm recovered enough that I don't have much else to say. I had lost 20 lbs at the nadir. Now I'm back up 5.
So glad you mentioned the sleep. I've been taking videos everyday since mine. check em out if you'd like. I've been up for 3 days now. I think I'm having a great recovery despite the sleep factor. I seem to have such trouble and fear taking a sleeping pill because it depresses resperatory funtion. Take care man... I know how you feel!
Oh and, yah, sleeping sucks. I sleep like, probably 60 degrees inclined with a small pillow behind my head, but I still wake up every 2 hours with a big hunk of blood/mucus plastered to the back of my throat.
Heh you and me are in a similar boat man, I had my surgery July 14th, 2008. Your actually really lucky you can open your mouth after 1 week, I'm hard wired shut for 6 effing weeks. Also, your lucky you can talk, whenever I talk, it's like I'm gurgling my own built up spit. You must have had a rigid fixation procedure done? Good lucky man.
Oh man, my sympathies. Yeah, as orthognathic surgery goes, I had a pretty simple procedure -- single piece LeFort 1 with rigid fixation and no splint, and they fixed my deviated septum. I had blood oozing out of my nose for about 10 days, but it's stopped now. The mucus comes and goes, but avoiding milk helps keep it in check. Sudafed stopped working after a while. Hopefully your blood/mucus problems will clear up soon. Good luck!

Anyway, just hang in there. It turns around quickly and pretty soon the only thing you'll be antsy about is the several more months of braces. :-)
