@RawalpindiBrittania Pakistan and repubic of india were created in 1947 from the british-indian empire. Before 1947 "india" was a word used to describe the geograpihic location of south Asia. Similiar to how "middle east" is used to describe the location of west Asian countires. The word "india" itself is coined together by the British! So our ancestors never called themselves "indians", but this is what the British called them.

To me, we are different from indians. Remember only about 3% of the indian population is ethnically, culturally, similiar to Pakistan, and those people are Punjabis.

As a Punjabi, I dont feel like I have much in common with other indian populations, such as south indians, gujaratis, bengalis, marathis, ect. I feel I'm as distinct from them as much as I'm disticnt from an Iranian, or Arab, or Kurd.

Both Pakistan and India were created in 1947 from British Indian empire. Punjab was an independent state before the British came. Our ancestors would have chose to have an independent state, we would have not joined india. But Punjabi Muslims wanted to be apart of an Islamic country.

Whilst in 1947 when "india" was created, most states which make up present-day india didnt have a choice of whether they wanted to become apart of "india". The British pretty much forced all these states to become apart of "india". The name "india" itself is deprived from the Indus river in Pakistan - see that, indians named their country after a Pakistani river.
