  • This is a beautiful visual showcasing of New York City :) The city of man. A city God loves. PS. I had no idea Jesus was Victor Garber!

  • How did theymanage to make a great music video in a religous movie with people skipping?

  • Comment removed

  • Oh, I see now that it's much sadder than I'd thought. He's erasing everything he did. This is painful to watch.

    "Could we start again, please?"

  • @blogegog It's actually symbolizing where Jesus washes the disciple's feet before the last supper, a sign of servitude and love. Some parts of the play are a tad sketchy (as in the same character depicting John the Baptist and Judas Iscariot, two completely opposite roles) but all in all I think it captures the story beautifully.

  • Oh. Jesus smooshed the tattoo off of Judas/John the Baptists' cheek. He seemed to do it knowingly. I wonder what the guy who wrote this awesome play meant by doing that.

Regardless, the whole thing is fantastic. Much better than Jesus Christ, Superstar.

  • It is confusing that the character that plays John the Baptist also plays Judas. Why did they have to do it like that? I don't know...

  • It doesn't matter if you are of the faith or not, if it moves you then you are in the spirit of what it was meant to be. does that make any sense whatsoever?

  • Cue crying now

  • lol at 4:11 I do that everytime someone hands me a mirror because of this movie

  • i didn't see this scene in the dvd how do you get your hands on the whole entire movie with this scene included? someone please let me know!!!

  • Every time I watch this movie it,s always heartbreaking, there,s always something to learn from this

  • Makes you take a long hard look at yourself, does,nt it??????

  • Actually All the guys in this movie are really cute

  • this movie makes me have a higher respect for Jesus...I love it so much!! makes me happy and want to cry haha......

  • this movie have a higher respect for Jesus......:)

  • 2 people can't build a beautiful city

  • @ellsbells732 Christs people can build a beautiful City. Thats what the song refers too. The idea that his people can make their own communitys and live the way God intends them to live. Be a beacon of light in a cold corrupt world and truly show Jesus's spirit through it.

  • i love that they somehow manage to make new york look deserted

  • @RoonskiLuv As Christians, We don't live for the world. Thats why they made NY look deserted. It shows that the relationship with Jesus belongs in the spirit, not in the flesh and todays cold corrupt world.

  • @Tom6093

....ok i wasnt really asking WHY it was deserted, just commenting on the fact that they managed to do it

and you know, as an agnostic, its comments like urs that ruin whats really just a beautiful movie for me

  • @RoonskiLuv It is a great movie. But think about the true message in it.

  • i love this film, i watched cause im doin the play of it, but im well upest, they siad in the song lirics that they dont do alabaster, thats my last name, =c but i must agree brilliant film!!!!=p

  • @ 4:15 Jeffery Mylett's giggle is so freaking adorable

  • He plays both John the Baptist and Judas.

  • Waite, what? John the baptist dude betraied him?! WTF??? I think I am missing something, or is this just more of the crazyness of the movie?

  • @happylmc Yep, the guy who played J T B also covered Judas...

  • Yes it is dinocubfan.

But this is real christianity live it believe it.

Open our eyes not our mouths that is what Jesus meant

Help our fellow man stop trying to save them.

  • It's the wonderful music...mixed with the charm of Vaudeville....EVERYONE likes this move! IT's the best! And the exuberant performances of these amazing young actors that just makes it work.

  • interesting that they would have him give the hebrew blessing over the supper...instead of some christian interpolation

  • @fragmentsofmemory because jesus was jewish, he came to complete the old laws, therefore its no surprise he would bless it in hebrew

  • ...my greatest dream...!...a beautiful city.... the City of Man!...

  • ...my greatest dream...!...

  • This song sounds like it came from an episode of the Partridge Family. lol

  • i love that tiger puppet

  • How can I ever enjoy Jesus Christ Superstar after this genius!

The removal off the clown paint represents the end of play and the start of the more serious part of God's spell.

See my coments on Part 1.

  • @aberdown you know, it is quite possible to enjoy both!!

  • omg this is my favorite song ever. one word BEAUTIFUL!

  • Jesus as depicted in Godspell is true. He came to earth for one sole purpose: to reconcile mankind to God thru Christ's atoning sacrifice via His death on the cross, and more importantly, His resurection three days later. By paying the ultimate price for our sins, God no longer is at war with us, if we believe in Jesus's message: Come to me those who thirst for the Truth and be Forgiven of your sins). It is thru Christ alone that we can be at peace with God and have eternal life. John 3:18

  • I wish Jeffery and Gilmer had been the leads on this song, oh well.

  • Now I've been watching this movie and remember all the songs and this song, "A Beautiful City" I do not recall at all.. It is also not on my auto cassette that I have of this musical.. But I'm glad to have heard it.. Does show how a beautiful city New York is.

  • Paper cups. Dignifying.

  • I'm not Christian...I'm actually a pagan, but I still rememberf watching this movie, and totally loving Jesus...not because he was Jesus, but because in this moment he was the perfect person....he forgave everyone, even those who would kill him,He forgave averyone,,,even those he knew who loved him, but would not defend him...

  • @Ravisante5000 I completely understand what you mean.I grew up in a non-religious household, and consider myself an atheist, but when I saw a Babtist University's production of this show in the mid-70's,I,at 13, left the show feeling completely uplifted and loving of others. The movie truly speaks of a time when there were those who were unashamedly sincere and heartfelt in their "all inclusive" religious beliefs. This show, to me, is the best of what religion SHOULD be!

  • Absolutely. This is an example of the best of any religion...loving other people, just because they are there...

  • Comment removed

  • The Jesus this movie depicts is actually lacking. The real Jesus Christ is both Perfect AND Alive AND God. Jesus loves you and died on the cross for you and me. Sin separates us God and because of our sin we deserve eternal death in Hell. Jesus died to save us and give us eternal life. Jesus IS God, holy and perfect and almighty. I highly encourage you to seek who Jesus is. If you have questions, feel free to message me. I noticed you referred to yourself as a "pagan." What did you mean?

  • @sourpatchedgoat I am tempted(pardon the pun) not to reply to your comment...you apparently work on the premise that all people,no matter how just and kind and good, are consigned to Hell if they don't seek or believe in Jesus.Taht's not a very Christian way to approach spiritual matters. As for my 'pagan' beliefs,I am a practicing Wiccan, and have been so for almost 30 years.I've seen Jesus' story told before,in ancient religions that were practiced long before Christianity existed.

  • @Ravisante5000

I think you see the message even if you don't acknowledge the messenger.

Mathew gave us the joyous revelation of Jesus -- a reminder that our God is always among us and sees us as the mortals He created. That is why Jesus was so important: He lived as one of us and died as one of us.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

  • Dyslectic - Agnostic - Insomniac, I lie awake at night, wondering if there really is a dog.

  • @drjayce Love that one.

  • where the hell is on the willows?!?!!?

  • Not quite exactly the 15th century mural painting in Milan created by Leonardo da Vinci... 5:21

  • What did Jesus say to all the aposales at the last supper?..........................."If you all get on THIS side of the table, you all can be in the picture."

  • 5.53 that is the girlist run i have ever seen from a man it girlier than mine!!!! and am a girl LOL

  • I love this film. Is it wrong of me to love this movie and still be an atheist. I really don't think so, but I want other peoples input on it.

  • No, of course not. I'm agnostic myself, but I love this movie.

  • @napoholic If you are a kind loving person, and this film gives you to desire to be even more kind and loving, then that's the important thing.Screw the 'religious' element...I'm a practicing witch, and I adore this movie.Something about the way they presented everything...so innocent, but also so real...

  • Of course not . I am agnostic and I love this music and movie. Religion is like myth... a good fantasy or science fiction novel...we can still be touched and changed. Aethism and emotion do go together though many will say otherwise

  • There are many ways to interpret truth, whether it be with science or metaphysics. You don't have to believe what other people believe in the exact same way to be moved by truth.

  • I'm JEWISH and love this movie. I think it's fine for anyone to enjoy it =)

  • so am i, but this movie is so great and i love the music so much that it doesnt bother me!!

  • @djsrob I'm sort a Budhist and a also a witch and I still love this movie. I don't know why. Maybe because this is the way I think Christianity SHOULD be. About love and helping eachother and taking care of eachother-you know like socialism. Not about greed and judging others and calling other people sinners.

  • Hi. I am a Christian and I had to comment. Jesus Christ is the example for Christians. He is perfect, living, holy, almighty, eternal God. He is a God of love and compassion (He died for our sins) and yet He is also a God of justice. Sin separates us from God. Jesus brings salvation to those who believe in Him. I'm sorry if Christians have not showed you the love of Christ, but I challenge you to seek who Jesus is. All those that put there trust in Christ will never be put to shame Romans 10:11

  • @sourpatchedgoat Amen Brother !!!! " Trust in the Lord and he shall give you the desires of your heart " Palsms 3.

  • @djsrob of course not! cuz this movie rly isnt about god. its more about a happy community. :)

  • @djsrob Course not... I myself am a Christian, but I completely understand why you'd like this. I think it's cool that this movie is all about Love and a tight, comfortable comunity. I love the fact all of you people love this movie. It really brings culture together. Just the happiness. I know tons of people who love this movie. I love it. It just... warms me inside. I love culture mixing. This... this is what I wish the world was like...

  • @djsrob same here. im agnostic and i loved watching this movie when i was younger <3

  • @djsrob I question your views on an almighty who does exist because why do we see different colors.

  • @djsrob

Hey! I read your post and I just had to respond. Godspell is an interesting take on the Gospel but what it leaves out is the resurrection and identity of Jesus the Christ. This movie omits the very deity of Jesus. He was God. Man is separated from God because of sin (which leads to Hell). Jesus came to earth to redeem us, save us, and offer eternal life to those who follow Him. I would high encourage you to seek after the identity of Jesus. He loves you, and is real and alive.

  • @djsrob its not wrong. although it is philosophically impossible to be an atheist, because to be an atheist you need to have absolute knowledge that there is no god, and in order to have that knowledge you need to be omnipotent which would make you a god yourself, which presents a contradiction.

  • i dont really know the answer. im christian. I like this play and movie because it presents the story of Christ in a more fun, pleasing and socially acceptable way I think. You know how some of us say "Oh you're going to hell because of this!" Although scripture tells us to accept him and live by his teachings, the people that would say that have made a major wrong themselves, for we should not judge others because we too will be judged and christians should love everybody, no matter what :)

  • @Ryanthe0man We should talk of how Jesus loves us. How he changes all of us. It started with only 12 but has grown to billions. Forget the part of if u don't believe. That would turn anyone off of what God wants. This will only turn people away. Jesus loves.......End of Story.

Yes, there are other old Pagen storys like that of Christ, But they were all false .

  • @Tom6093 I apologize if my comment was vague...I reread it just now and realized I should have worded it differently (only human right!? haha) I meant to say that many christians can be harsh and judgmental and we should instead be accepting and loving like Jesus. Sorry again for my unclarity (if thats a word, probably not)

  • @Ryanthe0man I think many Christians need to see GodSpell. Their so caught up on the, " If you don't believe , your going to hell " Stuff or trying to judge the unsaved. This isn't how Jesus wanted us to spread his messege. Christians now take more of the role of the Pharasees. This is why we are looked down upon as a group. It seems to me, when the pharasees believed in the old laws, they felt it was justifiable to judge who didn't follow those laws...Like Jesus. Now we treat ..con.

  • @Tom6093 AGREED!! I've already decided that I'm going to introduce my kids to Jesus by having them watch Godspell. They show how fun Jesus was and capture his charm and humor (and yes, Jesus had a sence of humor)

  • @OMGraceable There ya go !!!! The one thing I loved about this movie is the love for Jesus and his followers that they all showed each other. I loved how Jesus had a seperate relationship with each one of them and each one of them had a seperate relationship with him, He is our friend and our master. Not the animal the neo nazi atheists make him out to be,

  • @Ryanthe0man Now we treat non believers like those who didn't follow the old laws and we judge them. Street Preachers. Churches judging other churches. Even Christians VS. Christians.. It's sad !!!!!

  • @Tom6093 yeah, Love God, and love others as yourself

  • @Ryanthe0man By George , I think you've got it !!!!!!

  • @djsrob Why resist the pull it has?---

  • @djsrob I'm an atheist as well, and I absolutely love this movie. I like the music and plot and parts of the message, but do not believe in the religious part of the movie. However, Christianity had about the right philosophy (be kind, treat others as yourself, do not be greedy, etc).

  • @djsrob I love this movie as well, think of it as a seed. everything is brought to the Lord.

  • @djsrob Of course it isn't wrong to love GODSPELL! It is wrong to equate an entertaining off-Broadway hit show with the teachings of Jesus. They're two different things. It's possible to hate GODSPELL and still love Jesus, and vice versa.

  • @djsrob Firstly, it's good music. Secondly, just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean that the message to be good to one another is a bad message. If you believe that Jesus was a man, he still had some good ideas.

  • @djsrob Why ??? See how Jesus loved them. See how he had a relationship with each one of them. He died for us !!!!! If you deny him, Your denying the love he has for you. Science is the answer to Gods creation. If you ever get the chance to see this play, The first song is called , " Tower of Babble" It basically talks about what the characters believed before they were baptised. Athiesm , philosophy, is mentioned all through this song. But when Christ called them, they couldnt resist.

  • @djsrob Old comment, I know. Richard Dawkins sometimes talks about loving all the great religious music. I know exactly what he means... Handel's Messiah for example. In my case it's more that I remember the old hymns from my Catholic childhood. Also, I heard a great composer say the other day that "music is completely meaningless... You could imagine the 1812 Overture being about a night in a whore house if that's what Tchaikovsky said it was about" (I know you mean the words but... still:)

  • @djsrob Don't be an Athiest. God is all around you. Hawking and the gang deny God because they cannot measure Him or locate HIm, but because Go is not Physical, he cannot be located using physical senses. But You can feel him, feel yourself being pulled towards him, if you reach out and ask. "Be still, and know that he is God"

There are no desires that have no fulfillment.

Reach for God, even if you're not sure how, and He will reach back.

  • @djsrob Religion is what is taught.. faith and spirit come's with life.. we all have it, it's hand in hand with hope.. wishes and dreams we don't know anything further then the day's we wake up.. so why care.. I don't believe in Religion.. I just enjoy things for what they are.. and maybe you do too ^_^ .. Spirtual myself

  • @djsrob There is nothing wrong with loving this movie...heck,I'm a practicing Witch and I still love this movie...Christian or Athiest,Bhuddist or Satanist, this movie, this story has wonderful things to teach people about loving eachother...

  • @djsrob It's because this movie just tells you the very essential about Jesus' message, while it puts away the whole dogmatic/religious issue. This is what makes this movie able to touch your heart in spite of you being an atheist :)

  • The movie is excellent :) YEP

  • got to say, im impressed with the film; iv seent he play in manchester and thought it was pretty boring apart from the songs; i think the film makes the show easier to appreciate.

  • the way he said the words are yours there.. i dunno it's kinda sad like he really does know.

  • Jesus, in the Gospel, knew exactly who would betray him. Imagine, if you would, that Jesus did not choose Judas as an aspotle. Where would be?

  • but God knew what was to happen to him before Jesus was even born. It was all in God's plan. Remember, God works in mysterious ways

  • One of the best scenes in the film

  • oh god!!!! a lot of memories with this song

  • Just a bit stumped as to why the same person cast to portray John the Baptist is also portraying Judas Iscariot. Whats up with that?

  • Because he fulfills the role of prophecy. He was sent to do as he must, and what the others would not. It was like what Jesus told him at the beginning, "We do well now to conform with all that God requires." As I often think, the two of them were angels sent from Heaven to fulfill specific roles in guiding the company through the day they left their regular lives behind for their faith.

  • i'm cunfused with that too

  • Limited Budget! LOL!

  • Good question. In real life John & Judas had very specific roles/destinies.

In the play - I think it was just economy:) Don't infer any great meaning from this.

Though John was imprisoned & taken out of public ministry shortly after Jesus began His ministry. Judas then selected as one of the Apostles. So there is a timeline flow....though the real persons did not meld into each other:)

  • actually, I'd argue that stevenS all the way through is conciesly pretentious, with the choice in order of parabels even having purpouse. Id therefore say that thelink between judas/john was also purposfull, agreeing with JConifer.

  • He did that to show the power God has over us to cause the man that baptized the folowers to also be Jesus' best friend and still kill him.

  • 19 - you're soooo wrong!!!!!

  • it's just a movie, relax, i know that jesus is important to me as well but its just a movie

  • Not that it matters, but you've posted this on all the videos of "Godspell," a play that came out around the same time as "Jesus Christ Superstar" but not the same play.

  • i like how they retrace their steps in this scene. i get chills when they walk back past the fountain. it's so moving to me.

and the song is amazing too.

  • @neurotically69 Me too. The aerial shot when they come around the fountain as the song climaxes. It's breathtaking.

  • This show really introduced me to my faith.

my aunts church performed it a couple years back

it also inspired me to sing and get involved in theatre

  • I love "Beautiful City" - and even though the song is frequently used in the stage show now, I really prefer the movie version over the re-written version used currently. It's a better song with better lyrics. I also LOVE the way they do the makeup removal scene in the movie- it's sweet and touching, and you know that something serious is coming soon.

  • this is my favorite song in the movie and my favorite scene! i love it!

  • i don't get why they were all laughing when Jesus said one of them would betray Him. did they WANT to be the one you betrayed Him? when they were asking, it sure sounded like it!

    ~*ricki*~

  • Because Jesus knew that one day he would be betrayed and he knew who would do it. My impression was that only judis was the only one that would do it the others we're only asking if it would be them because they thought that it was an impossable task to betray the son of god so easy. that's my own opinion of course.

  • I saw Passion of the Christ two years ago and did not cry at all throughout that whole movie. The crucifixion in Godspell is way more powerful for me than any thing else. I was sobbing when I saw this performed live at my grandparents church. It renewed my faith. I don't know how to explian it but I don't have a strong faith but after seeing Godspell, I do have a faith - a faith in Jesus Christ. My Lord. My Savior.

  • wow. that is so weird, but hey, whatever works. i'm glad that your faith has been renewed.

  • same here.

i think its because its told in the simpliest way. no blood. no gore. its harder to take in. its breathtaking.

  • That's a pretty good way to get shot if you asd me. But I love Godspell

  • Why? It's a play - folks play differnt roles. :)

  • It bothers me that John and Judas are the same person...

  • I remember asking about that myself, when I saw it in 1973 in London's West End (they invited everyone up on stage for a chat during the interval).

The answer has something to do with the fact that (some feel) John did not support Jesus as much as he could have done. It also has to do with having an ensemble cast and not being able to spare someone to be John just for the first 5 minutes, while it's an important role.

  • heyy people i might know you

  • y r ther no cars in the streets

  • Well throughout the movie there is supposed to be a sort of seperation between them and the rest of society. The only time you see people other than disciples is before Jesus is first seen and after Jesus's death. The fact that there are no cars is just keeping with the sort of seperation that is maintained throughout the film.

  • This is a nice song. I think I might go out and buy the soundtrack to this movie. This movie gives me good feelings. Of a better time; a bit safer.

  • Actually, the 1970s were the most violent decade in the US in the latter half of the 20th century. Don't mistake cinema portrayals for history.

  • k, like maybe i'm reading this wrong but when one of the guys looks in the mirror he says to jesus "hey, that's you!" like, implying that jesus is in all of us.

    i just think it's cool.

  • i never realized that before...but i agree :)

i think it's a great to look at it!

  • what he was doing was joking with jesus, because when jesus looks in the mirror, it is him.

  • i just love that he says the motzi and kiddush (blessings over the bread and wine)! i think it's great to include that he's jewish!

  • yea victor garber actually is jewish so it works for him as an actor too

  • I so agree. I want to listen to the prayers again.

  • What part is Learn Your Lessons Well in???

  • It's not in the movie version.

  • o ok thanks

  • happy easter

  • this song should be on a commercial to shpw that we can clen the world even though thats the sign thats what the commercial people should do!

  • this, day by day and by your side are my favorite songs i love this song!!!!and all the others thank u for posting it

  • What's this first song called?

  • A beautiful city

  • Thanks! Great movie! Great post

  • I love (Other than Victor and David) that the actors got to keep there names (even though they almost never use names)

  • I saw this movie when it first came out and I have not seen it since until now. I remember the movie like I just saw it yesterday. This was very moving for me because I was really young about eight when I saw it.

  • they must have cleared out entire streets for this, espeaily the "save the people" scenes. not a single person is around.

  • Director David Greene told me that just outside the camera frame were crowds of onlookers standing behind barricades!

  • i always wondered that.

but what about, like... the wide shots where they zoom in onto the people after showing the whole city? like at the beginning of this part.

  • You still only see the one street that they are on.

  • Exactly. Notice that you only see a little sliver of street level (with the Godspell cast romping by) in that shot; otherwise it's an aerial shot of buildings. At that angle no other streets are visible. It's all about camera angles!

  • We're doing Godspell as a community theater production. I couldn't find it at the movie store to rent. I found this and was sooo excited. Thanks :)

  • It IS available on DVD through Borders...but shelling out 25 bucks, while rather steep, was DEFINITELY worth it for this amazing movie. :)

  • I was able to find it at Amazon for around $8.

  • What Part has Day By Day?

  • it's in the end of part 3

  • This frist song sounds like a Beatles song. Or Beach Boys.

    I love it = D

  • Ï think it sounds a lot like the Cowsills. I absolutely love the music and songs in Godspell!

  • me too!! the first time i saw this i was overtaken

  • I love this movie! It's one of the best out there and will always be remembered.
