It is better to teach a child to sound out each letter, ie, c-a-t. If you make them memorize the sound for "at" without teaching the short A sound and the T sound, it's not really phonics. If that is how you teach, then you will also have to make your child memorize many more two letter combinations, like "ab," "ac," "ad," "af," "ag," "aj," on and on.
We really like "An Ant - Learn to Read." It's really a good storybook for 4 to 5-year-olds. All the letters are sounded out in the stories.
I have researching homeschooling techniques for my child. I have found flash card apps to be invaluable as the child can pickup a phone or jump on a computer to learn while I prepare for my next lesson. Wondering if anyone has any tips on the best application and techniques for this. Currently I am using Flash Card Maker Pro for Android devices but I am open to suggestion.
where do you get that big note paper thingy cause i need it to teach my cousin to read and stuff and i tryed looking for it everywhere. and my future is gonna be a teacher

Hmm, so the lady is showing how to write in this way: /c/ + /at/ = cat. What about writing and sound a letter out like this /c/+/a/+/t/? Does it not lead to the word /cat/ also?

the reason why she is spelling it out /c/+/at/=cat is because AT is a sight word so children are more familiar with that.
