Outside of Asheville has prejudice about it. But at the heart of Asheville, the city limits, I have not seen one act of racism. I did see some people protesting gays, but they were overrun by homosexuals which was AWESOME to see! The KKK tried to have a speech here, but Asheville told them that they couldn't speak there. Asheville is a wonderful place, you just have to learn how to be happy in order to enjoy it :)
I moved out of Asheville when I was 21 to Tampa Florida. I have been all over the US and outside of the country and just want to move back to Asheville. Allot of young people without the funds to enjoy the arts, restaurants and entertainment will say that it sucks, but when you get to the point in your life where you have the funds to go out and enjoy what Asheville has to offer you will fall in love with it. I can't wait to move back.
I love Asheville. We live in Va Beach, Va and just returned from a week's vacation there in a loft Apt on Church Street. Stayed here last year for a week as well. It is truly a special town.
Va Beach is OK. since I have lived here my entire life I am kind of over it to be honest, but most people who move here from elsewhere absolutely love it. It's funny you brought up the Great Dismal Swamp. In my 49 years of living here I have never actually visited it. Driven by it many times, but never actually went in there. The way to explore is to take a cayak and paddle in one of the feeder ditches to the center. I have been told by friends it is amazing.

Ive lived in Asheville for most of my life...Yea it isnt the greatest, its not so much of crime but the people are freaking weird! Not trying to sound mean but people will walk downtown smelly, barefoot, its not a good place to LIVE. I know the feeling. I didn't get that impression of downtown A-ville, but I did get the exact same impression as you of the people. It has been a few years since I was last in Asheville, and I almost left the second I set foot there, but; I decided to give the city a chance. Bad idea! First impressions say a lot at times. I live in the Raleigh/Durham area and this place is as bad. I have been to SF and A-ville doesn't even come close. However, I can see why someone would say that.
People of color that reside in the area are consistently harassed, arrested, and/or beaten. Not to mention the police force is also one of the most corrupt in the south east. They were not originally from Asheville and all the jurors were questioned as to where they were from by the DA. That's conflict of interest if you ask me!

I knew places from where stores and architectures were. Though I do know where the dangerous parts of Asheville are. I don't know what they're called, but I do remember them being dangerous. There's an area next to the street Hannah's is on that I remember being extremely dangerous. But I don't remember what it was called. I think Eagle street.

PVA is worse than it was 20 years ago. Fencing in Oak Knoll and renaming it after what sounds like a cemetary turned it from a mild place into a dangerous one - you don't fence in human beings without psychological repercussions. The Hillcrest community has done a decent job of policing their own community, though, very admirable.
I do like how West Asheville has been revived. Your car is still broken into twice a year, though.
I was born and raised here. Asheville has it's downfalls like any other town (it's expensive) but I LOVE IT here. It's nice to get away for a while but my heart always speeds up when I get close to home and can look up and see that Blue Ridge of mountains in front of me. Y'all come visit!

I agree. In the two decades I have lived here in NC, I set foot in Asheville for the first time this year. I wanted to leave the second I set foot there. I was expecting something more lively. Instead, I got the most miserable place I've ever seen. I reside in the Raleigh/Durham area and this cesspool has seen better days too. NC has now become the LAST place I would look for work. The pay and the way they treat you in the workplace is crap too. Not to mention that there really is no work.

Thanks, y'all! That was sweet! Born in Chicago '54, but grew up in Asheville between '59 - '74, haven't been back in an old dawg's age! I've got three good stories of being a "street-kid" in the late '60s for every location you've got! Most every area there looks a little (or a lot!) different, but i'd know that town anywhere, uh, with my eyes closed! Thanks, again, for some great memories!

I met several people who were from Charlotte, Atlanta, and New York City who say those cities suck...just because its a bigger city doesn't mean everyone loves them, I have been to those 3 cities and Asheville and they are all really great TO ME...I grew up in a town called Savona, New York that has only 800 people, so when you come from a town that small, you tend to think Asheville is pretty awesome!!!!!!!

It would be my suggestion for BlackLabPuppieSeeker to just move. In every town there are people who love it and people who hate it. Trashing it isn't going to change anyones opinion. I live in Dillon SC which was named THE worst place to live. But it's home. The streets like well worn jeans, the people are family, I have loved it well, but I'm sure there are those who hate it. Life is too short, move.

This is not a diverse city, in terms of equal rights! We know someone they called fro Jury Duty in Asheville. They were not originally from Asheville and all the jurors were questioned as to where they were from by the DA. All those who were NOT from Asheville were dismissed and told to go home, they were discriminatedd against and sent home There was a woman who was from here, and her relative was a friend of the DA and she was allowed to be a juror. That's conflict of interest if you ask me!

There's no decent jobs here, if you can find a job at all! So many of the college graduates, even ones who's been working for years and years are only offered min. wage and part time hours. There's wildlife here that's dangerous the law will do nothing about! Drivers try to run you over.

I knew places from where stores and architectures were. Though I do know where the dangerous parts of Asheville are. I don't know what they're called, but I do remember them being dangerous. I was raised in many different places in Asheville. West Asheville is no longer the "ghetto" area & most of the complexes have calmed down QUITE a bit. There is always going to be some problems in our "projects" but no where near as bad as it used to be. Asheville is VERY diverse & at the same time we have many hypocrites, but what city doesn't have hypocrites? I don't think I could leave this place.....each day brings something new & usually wonderful! Our mountains are AMAZING!!!!

ok I knew & still figured deaverview wouldn't change, but most places have. I mean hillcreast (when I lived there) had so much crap & now they actually have security to check people in & out. West A-ville is the place I know best. I lived on 1 of the busiest streets & I still go through there a LOT . I've even got 3 friends who still live there. We have LOTS of wrecks & people that drive WAY TOO FAST, so I'm not surprised by the large concentration of State Troopers.

PVA is worse than it was 20 years ago. Fencing in Oak Knoll and renaming it after what sounds like a cemetary turned it from a mild place into a dangerous one - you don't fence in human beings without psychological repercussions. The Hillcrest community has done a decent job of policing their own community, though, very admirable.
I do like how West Asheville has been revived. Your car is still broken into twice a year, though.

There's deer running all OVER the place, especially in people's yard. There are people who live near a kids ballpark who are so obsessed by deer they feed them on a daily basis. We know someone who's got Lyme Disease now from living nearby them! I sure hope the kids in the park don't come down with that ailment. It can cause meningitis and KILL you!

Asheville is the worst place to live. You get Harassed by the police dept because they think they are in a big city. They suck at there jobs, they flip over small things but when someone actually deserves to go to jail they are set free. Have fun in the most shit hole town in North Carolina. I agree. In the two decades I have lived here in NC, I set foot in Asheville for the first time this year. I wanted to leave the second I set foot there. I was expecting something more lively. Instead, I got the most miserable place I've ever seen. I reside in the Raleigh/Durham area and this cesspool has seen better days too. NC has now become the LAST place I would look for work. The pay and the way they treat you in the workplace is crap too. Not to mention that there really is no work.
