The funny thing is, most of the time that the "professional", life long warriors of Sparta met the Athenian "voluntary" warriors on the field of battle, the Athenians won.

Sparta was a closed scociety and most of what the othere Greeks knew about Sparta was not true. For example the Greeks thought the Spartans did not care about worldly things, like gold and silver, as well as luxery items. The reason they did this is that they were smart enough to know that the main reason wars start is because of money and the Spartans did not want to give any nation a reason to invade Sparta.

Funny enough, Spartans usually didn't marry until they were thirty and before that, the only real sexual contact they had was with fellow spartans. So in order to not weird out the soldier, the married couple would first meet at night, the woman in Spartan uniform and with cut hair to get the male used to a female body again.
