Tourism in Spore about Casinos, a variety of beautifull girls at red light districts, entertainment at the pubs. They don't come here to admire politic, a complete waste of time.

The Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and to a lesser extent Malaysia provides better such entertainment at a fraction of the price for those who prefers it. In fact some Singaporeans travels to these countries just for that. Singapore attracts primarily visitors on business and shopping trips. There are casinos in the above mentioned countries too some legal and some illegal which they have been operation for years.

Today, Singapore's gdp is over $50000 per capita. Say what you may but it is not by accident that SIngapore grew so rapidly. Instead from 1819 to 1965 under the British, Singapore was just a dirt poor country with a port.

The Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and to a lesser extent Malaysia provides better such entertainment at a fraction of the price for those who prefers it. In fact some Singaporeans travels to these countries just for that. Singapore attracts primarily visitors on business and shopping trips. There are casinos in the above mentioned countries too some legal and some illegal which they have been operation for years.

@macrobots When Singapore gained independence in 1965, it's gdp is only $500 per capita - only slightly higher than that of Malaysia's at $300. Hardly developed. Today, Singapore's gdp is over $50000 per capita. Say what you may but it is not by accident that SIngapore grew so rapidly. If it really were the infrastructure that the British left behind, Singapore would have been rich a long time ago. Instead from 1819 to 1965 under the British, Singapore was just a dirt poor country with a port.

At that time, Spore had just attained self-government and was facing high unemployment and growing population. I spoke to them and they cheekily and happily said Singapore is a "fine country". This country has become a mix of confuse multinatinal races and they don't even know who is the PM of Spore.

@macrobots I do not doubt there may be a lot of third world underclass workers. They are needed in order to move ahead with the development of the country. They are an important part of Singapore's growth. And they have been treated fairly (unlike some middle east countries I hear about). The issue is not with them. The issue is whether or not the PAP have been doing a good enough job for people living in Singapore. As simple as that. I for one believe they have.

The worldwide study conducted and released by UBS lately has some unflattering results for Spore.
While our economy has the highest GDP (PPP) per capita in Asia at $49,288 according to a World Bank , our people do not enjoy a quality of life which commensurate with it. Though we are technically a developed first world country, some economic indictators as shown by the UBS study suggested that Sporeans are not that better off than those in Third World countries.
