  • I was 7 years old when this happened and I remember it as if it was yesterday. I was in town visiting family. We were eating out when all of this happened. Let's just say I haven't been back to California since. I'm a bit scared.

  • i know the caltrans guy who told that driver to turn right, but she no speaka engrish so she turned left and whoops, drove right off the edge to her death.

  • The driver died, sadly.

  • I was born in 87 and my sis was born in 88. My dad was working in san francisco at the time. My dad forgot something in his store so he went back to get it. If he didn't he would have been on that bridge...kind ok wish he was now that I think about it.

  • I had nightmares for the longest time about the people caught in the freeway collapses inside...the news fed my nightmares for days. It was the most horrific taking of life I have ever seen.

  • The new one wont beat the old one,but it will be safer to drive cause Caltranz FUCKED IT UP.

  • 0:46 it looks like the passenger grabbed the unconscious driver by the hair on the top of his head and jerked the guys head up...?...

  • When you have every day people helping, going right to the areas that are still unsafe to help rescue people that to me is a hero.

  • im glad the ppl in japan is getting all the help they need from all the ppl all over the world but i don't remember if japan helped the ppl of the bay area when they was hit by the big one.

  • Did the people in that car live?

  • @82Nikkis If you are talking about the 2 people in the orange Fairmont that was hanging, the driver died instantly but her brother in the passenger seat survived.

  • @CatalinaSafari73 remember them playing the home video of that clip over and over people flagged them to stop they kept going.. it was horrific scene!!!! all of us that experienced this evening remember it well.. it was a very nice day pink clowds mild and clear... I was @ Candlestick game 3

  • @chromalusion That was a horrific event. I too remember them playing that clip over and over again. I always thought(and still do) it was horrible disrespect against the man and his deceased sister to have a news camera shoved up close to the car after the man requested they not do so.

  • @CatalinaSafari73 , I bet you'd hate yourself if that was a $ 25,000 question, It was a Mercury Zephyr on the bridge

  • @rjd442 LOL, you're right I would have punched myself in the face for that one. I just now noticed the 'Zephyr' badge on the trunk after you pointed that out.

  • @82Nikkis six people died in that.

4 people crashed into each other.

1 car flipped over and tummpled down the broken section.

and the other 1 just slammed into a truck.

  • The Loma Prieta Earthquake of October 17, 1989 was very similar to the January 12, 2010 Haiti Earthquake because the Californian people lost their homes and the Haitians lost their homes too.

  • @JaeDizzley1995 you have a heart

  • @JaeDizzley1995 duh dumbass, except only 66 people died in the Loma Prieta quake and over 100,000 died in the Haitian quake.

  • @JaeDizzley1995 No, dumbass, its not like the Hatian quake. We were much better prepared, despite the size of the bastard. You sir, have your head up your ass. We did not bribe other countries that tried to help us. In fact, no other countries at all came to help us. Look up your facts, then try not to speak out your ass.

  • everythime im on that bridge i just hope it goes by fast, but somethimes traffic on the way back ehh yuk lol

  • I remember being stuck in grid-locked traffic on I-880 back in July of 1987 ( 2 years before this quake , and only 2 months before the Whittier quake where I was living at the time ) and my mom , my aunt and myself were saying : ' it'd be terrible to be up here on this freeway during an earthquake... '

    Little did we know ...

  • boy am i glad my dad didnt decide to go on the briidge after the quake, or i may not be here! and i cant stand driving over that bridge until it's more safe. i know im crazy but i would rather not be stuck there during a quake.

  • It's criminal that 20 years later the Bay Bridge is still not seismically safe...can't believe they call this the Golden State. Where is the will?

  • I hope we Bay Area residents don't end up like Haiti when the Hayward fault goes off.

  • @almondgrrl A new, safer Bay Bridge is being built and is now about 75% complete, when finished it will totally replace the existing "old truss-bridge" section from Oakland to Yerba Buina Island (go to google maps and click on Satalite imagery and zoom in on SanFrancisco Bay, and you will see the new bridge being built!

  • What was she doing driving eastbound on the upper deck?

  • @luvbeers The driver was originally on the lower deck headed towards Oakland on a return trip with her brother from SFO airport. Stopped by the collapse at Yerba Buena Island, they were advised to take the ramp there to the upper deck (to turn back to SFO), however on the upper deck a second officer, unaware and unable to see of the upper deck collapse, learned of their destination and advised they could go east to Oakland on the upper deck.

  • What I'm wondering is, how did the news woman actually make it to the scene? I would have thought Caltrans would have immediately closed off the bridge to ANY traffic unless they were police, fire, or rescue personnel.

  • No one needed to see a blood battered couple dead in a car, wtf.

  • i did

  • Agree. And for the person that gave you a minus one for expressing that needs their ass whipped.

  • ABC News and ABC7 told all the reporters to cover everything right away because they have to show the nation why the World Series stopped.

  • No one "needs" to see any of it. Why should reality be censored?

  • Why not?

  • Because that would defeat the purpose of news in the first place. News is rendered completely pointless if they only report on or show things that are pleasant to viewers.

  • @ellieysama: Oh, really? Where did you hear that?

  • I remember this quake. I was 9 years old, and inside my house with my Mom at the time. My brother was in the backyard playing. The quake started and I was totally freaked out. The funny thing though was when my brother came back inside the house ran up the stairs and told my Mom, "Sorry." According to my brother he jumped off our little wall thingy and landed on the ground, which at that very moment the qauke started. So he thought he started the quake. LOL. He was only 8 at the time.

  • lol

  • I saw an interview about this driver.. She was driving her dad home from SFO to Oakland and she was killed not knowng that there was a break in the bridge. Her dad survived, very shocked. Very sad..

  • I was in this earthquake, 8 years old at the time. I was at my daycare when it happened and the ground was rolling, sounded like crumbling bricks and all the car alarms went off. My mother was on a bus on her way to pick up my brother and I from the daycare and the bus swerved all over the road. Came home & my walls were cracked and bed was on the other side of the room my bookshelf fell over..We were out of power at my house for quite a few days and didn't have school that week as a result.

  • I really hate these news whores who always try and get the story. get the fuck outta the way and let the heroes do there job...

  • The tern hero is highly overused.

  • dcdxc

  • Can you not tell these to are hurt some guy says ''funny guys just chillin, his homeboy was dead or back or neck was broken! Not very funny!

  • That kid is a 19 year old twit. Doesn't know any better or wasn't taught any better by his parents.

  • lol that dude was just chillin while they puled him out

  • The lower deck prevented any cars from falling into the water. She drove off a huge gap in the upper deck several minutes after the quake occurred. She killed herself. Fortunately, her brother in the passenger seat survived.

  • They should have left the car on the bridge and walked. What a shame.

  • did any cars fell into the water that day??????????

  • I had never seen this footage before. It's quite SCARY to see them like that. I remember they interviewed the guy in the car and said his sister had just picked him up when they drove over the bridge. I've just seen the footage of the car driving off the edge. THAT part has ALWAYS HAUNTED me and I was SCARED to go on double-decker bridges like this one for the LONGEST TIME. This is TRULY SAD. RIP to her and God Bless and Keep her family.

  • wait so some 1 did die? i thought every 1 excapetd with no injuries

  • many died, most were crushed when the upper freeway collapesed on top of the lower

  • I'm still not sure I could go over double decker bridge. I was a teenager when this happened and I watched the coverage on tv. It's haunted me since. I just felt so horrible for everyone caught on that bridge and their family. God Bless and keep their families always.

  • lol so thats the car that Jumped...if he would of pushed it to 80 he would of made the damn gap at least making it to the other side, those Fairmonts can really hit top nodge of 140 with 5.0

  • You can't jump a gap like that unless the destination is lower than the starting side. Whether you're going 40, 80, or 140. I know that's how it looked in Dukes of Hazard and Speed, but cars just don't float that way.

  • I remember that day oh so well.I live in Stockton alil farther then Bentwood and the street was actually moving like a (slight) wave!! Parked cars were rocking back and forth. No Shit! It was Wild. (since i had just finished 2 beers, i thought i was DRUNK!!) lol

  • the lady driving died and her brother in the front seat lived

  • the driver did die.

  • Learn some grammar and spelling skills. The rest of the intelligent population thanks you.

  • I beleive they're already building its replacement, which will be cable-stayed and Earthquake proof.

  • to funkyfreshfreddie: did your taco have hot or mild sauce?

  • the driver looks dead

  • not the way a rescue is supposed to be done

    but if in a hurry

  • unfortunately i lived this; i was one of the medical groups that went to the cypress which collapsed. Miles of freeway just gone. It was terrible.

  • was that guy dead?

  • @jpm4444 . I was @ Candlestick.. stayed in city in car with my uncle.. saw fires from marina district didnt know how bad it really was till we got home to Jenner the morning of the 18Th 5:04 Pm 17 Oct 1989 is etched in my mind forever.. Game 3 still have my ticket stub.. and the Cheezy I survived the great Quake 89 Day Glo orange shirt.. I was 19 then explains why I would buy that shirt.. so sad for the casualties on the 880 OBB Cypress and in the city.. first News we saw was KTVU Elaine Corral

  • Those men look dead to me.

  • Game 3of The 1989 Fall Classic was to begin within the 5:00 P.M hour Oct.13,1989 ,when this quake occured. I felt it from in Brentwood some 90 miles away in the Delta,no kidding I tell you.

  • did that guy die

  • ill never forget this...i was 6 years old

  • I was 12 years old, sittin gon the kitchen counter easting a taco when this shit went down. A beef taco.

  • She had no business that close to the scene. What if the persons family saw this? How would they feel? I'm glad, because of tasteless incidents like this, reporters are alot more respectful in situations like this now.

  • Leslie Brinkley was just trying to capure a rescue live and everybody was just woried what happened

  • What's sad is that our culture is so disconnected from reality that we have the luxury of declaring death to be in poor taste.

Why should they avoid documenting reality just because some people can't handle life?

  • my family and many many loved ones and friends were in this, and I was 3. it was really scary.

  • I was 6 years old when this Earthquake happened...man that was quite a scary moment. I remember watching the news when it hit too.

  • I hear ya, and I was gonna say if that was the same car because I had to rewind it to see if that Chevy truck was in the background and it was!

  • the car landed on a bridge in such a way that it stuck right at the space between the fallen piece and the rest of the bridge...if it hadn't have stayed there, it would have fallen on top of the cars and people on the bottom deck!

  • For this journalist being so close to the victims, i would say that video is sick.

  • That guy has one hell of a story to tell. Is the other guy dead? If so that should be a seatbelt commercial.

  • i was in that earthquake.i was shopping when i felt a big rumbling shake.

  • i remember this crazy
