  • 9 people are sadly deaf );

  • his voice is godamn sexy

  • i wonder if he was high when he wrote this -,- i mean really? drop C, complicated jazz wonders. fuck man.

  • @adamlikescereal Umm... I don't think that is usually what people do when they are high, write complicated jazz wonders. Nope.

  • @adamlikescereal Drop C is actually drop D with all the strings tuned down a whole step, but in this song only the lowest string is tuned down to C. I'm not sure if there's even a name for this tuning.

  • @aswaea And for this particular song, in regards to the drop C tuning bit, he does keep all the strings tuned to standard but does the E down to C. He's about to come out with a chord/voice book for some of his songs soon, he might have that one in there

  • @4ourty5ive That's kinda what I already said... :)

But since drop D is standard tuning with the lowest string tuned down to D, Neon tuning could be called something like "drop D with the lowest string tuned down to C".

  • thats the best neon version

  • What a great guitar player. What passion!

  • Whats the matter, guitar players allways steal the show. But now they also steal slapping? :O haha, appreciate this guy's talent!

  • john mayer is a racist

  • I finally learned to play this song :). Man it took me forever! Well, 3 hours to get it down packed. I'm still trying to sing it while playing though.

  • @loicome 3 hours? either you're not playing it right or you are some kind of wunderkind. cos learning that pick/slap pattern that Mayer uses takes a lot of practice...

  • @aswaea Actually, I had the right hand fingerpicking pattern down already, but this song requires you to move up and down the fretboard alot, so it took me quite some time. There's also a lot of weird positions.

  • his voice is out of tune aswell

  • @peaces100 it doesn't matter, the song in itself is just brilliant. and lets face it, that guitar line is pretty difficult on its own. playing that and singing it. its ups the difficulty a lot, especially with the different rhythms

  • @peaces100 At least he doesn't auto tune his voice. (ahem, rebecca black). Also, playing that guitar part and singing at the same time is hard. I think the guitar part is really the core of the song, so he was probably focusing on making the guitar part flawless. The guitar carries the whole rythym of the song.

  • @loicome you sure about that? :)

    watch?v=I_oF9xGrU28

maybe not live (I hope) but on records at least.

Also I didn't actually find the singing part to be that hard for this song, once I first learned to play it properly. I feel it's kind of easy because of the right hand rhythm.

  • @thesubstrate You proved me wrong :).

  • Any idea what pick up he is using here?

  • and Mayer is out of tune once again

  • Everyone says that "where the light is" is the best perfomance of this song, but you can find lotsa better takes. For me, it lacks some grooveness

  • love it=) id appriciate if anybody had the time to check out the two vids on my channel and leave some feedback=)"

  • the art

  • I love Mayer. But it bothers me that his guitar is out of tune!!!

  • @ibanisse he is playing Drop C or in other words C-A-D-G-B-E, i'm pretty sure he knows when his guitar is out of tune, but it's not

  • @ThomasOverMany He's using a alternative tuning. But his guitar is still out of tune. The C tone/string is not in tune with the other strings.

  • he's the best and the only half decent blues artist out there, its really to bad he has a drug problem hence his voice starting to go

  • @ThEsIcKbEaTs care to elaborate on this drug problem?

  • he is by far the best modern/new whatever guitarplayer today. But there is no fucking competition!

  • @Paradisecity1992 you're an idiot.. open your ears and eyes b4 you say something so stupid

  • @Paradisecity1992

    joe bonamassa

  • @Paradisecity1992 yes there are. john mayer plays really well but if you look at andy mckee for example you'll see that there are actually better guitarplayers than john mayer!

  • @antriebsgolem I agree, but he still doesn't experience the same amount of popularity - maybe 'cause his work is instrumental

  • @Paradisecity1992 ever heard of steve vai? ..

  • He's the MAN!!! Badass!!

  • amazing song, but as far as his performances go this one is sub par... the C string is flat and his plucking of the higher notes is sloppy... 'where the light is is' much better

  • The tuning of the E-string is really, really bad

  • Drop C tuning.

  • Yes his guitar is out of tune, but you can also see that he notices too and starts hitting that low C less so it doesn't show as much. Smart.

  • Guitar not out of tune this song is played in drop C.

  • his guitar is not in tune

  • friends and I are having a debate.

"john mayer is the best guitarist of our generation"

please don't respond unless you've seen his electric and acoustic work. if you think hes NOT then provide an alternative.

    REPLY!!!

  • andy mckee, thomas leeb, sungha jung

  • @ComfortabIyNumb best guitarist for his age without a doubt and the best guitarist of the 2000's that can bridge the border between pop and blues so the little tweens who like his poppy stuff can discover the blues he plays, that's why i love him.

  • definately has some amazing Chords! His music is fun to play.

  • John Frusciante.

  • He is... But that's not saying much. I'm not knocking him because he is very good in any generation but today's pop music doesn't behold many guitarist. His percussive style and chord voicings are what I find exceptional. I just wish I liked his music more.

  • John Frusiciante, Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, Jonny Lang.

  • @ComfortablyNumb

Well great nickname first of all..I think you have a point in saying that he's the best guitarist of our generation..he gives me chills with his playing and singing,,but I would suggest Joe Bonamassa, another amazing artist as Mayer is,but with more bluesy influences..

The thing I find sad about Mayer is that he's become too commercial,he could show off his skills a lot more than he does..

    All the best from Switzerland

  • @ComfortabIyNumb andy mckee.

  • He rocks, but his mouth is absolutely HUGE! I mean, so huge, it's grotesque. He makes the weirdest faces. He still rocks though.

  • This guy's crazy.

  • ...even more amazing that he can play that riff whilst maintaining rhythm and bass with his thumb...and then singing.

  • wow...it's amazing that he can play that sick riff and still sing that well. jeez.

  • What kind of Martin is that?

  • Martin HD-35

  • not a D-28? I thought that's what he played.

  • no, in the beginning you can see the three piece wedge on the back.

  • haha great but i think his C came out of tune haha lol

  • Definitely

  • @tnable182 It didn't go out of tune, when somethings tuned that low and the string gets that lose, the slightest push too much can make it sound janky, so when he goes higher up on the string it sounds weird, but open it ok, thats why it sounds out of tune, then back in. It doesn't sound out the whole time. I bet he doesn't use that brand of string anymore now..

  • @4ourty5ive I know what you mean, noticed that when playing this song...thought I had tuned the string a bit too high, but after checking it a couple times realised that I was just pressing it too hard on the higher frets.

  • @4ourty5ive thts true but when ur a million dollar recording artist tht doesnt happen

  • @tnable182 Well, if he was still using a guitar that he used in his pre-millions days he might have not yet made the switch to his cutom made martin yet and been using an axe with-which that could've still happened... I mean, who really knows ?

  • @4ourty5ive thts his martin

  • @tnable182

    hahaha good ear!

  • este cabron es una reverenda verga!! no puede seer!! daamn!! he fuckin' rocks!! i love his funky slaps! haha damn!! =O

  • such a brilliant song, no matter how hard i try i cant play it like him

  • its a really neat technique. Should look at maybe Why Georgia or some of his other songs that are a bit slower to start with. I am gonna try n learn this one soon. its pretty sweet.

  • I cant get enough of this song

  • Me too, jsut perfect

  • that's pretty incredible

  • the best musician that ever lived.

  • whoa whoa whoa, huge claim dude. hes up there, but you need to really consider that statement

  • not even close.

  • no offense but Goot's version is better.

  • No offense to Goot fans; but the song is best sang with a guitar - not so much a piano. Goot's version doesn't even resemble this song if it weren't for the lyrics. John Performs it best because he wrote it. He knows best the emotion and intention behind the words. Just my opinion.

  • I'm glad you didn't blow up and diss me, you just made an honest opinion, I respect that.

  • Aw shucks, thanks =) Nothing wrong with Goot's version, that's why. I like his voice.

  • Hmmm, well I also like John Mayer's version, it sounds kind of simple yet like vibrant, i don't really know how to explain it ^^; oh and yer welcome:D

  • THAT IS IMPOSSIBE TO PLAY THE WAY HE DOES IT.

i can find no possible way to do it

  • he hits the E string while flicking downward with which ever string he needs to hit with his index

  • Comment removed

  • it needs a lot of practice! a lot!

  • so rediculous how someone could make a song this good

  • Absolutely right. I'm trying to learn it right now, and it's like, "I don't even have the mental capacity to learn this, much less freakin' MAKE IT UP!" For me, John really thinks outside the box with what you can do with a guitar and how to use it.

  • Hey, I just started learning it like 2 hours ago, and I think I almost got the hang of the into pretty good. E-mail me on youtube if u want a link to some good tabs.

  • Stick it with man. Took me like two weeks to play it decently. People have different learning curves depending on what/how they play.

  • drop C tuning??? if that exists ._.

  • ohhh it exists all right :P in flames plays in drop A tunning sometimes if im not mistaken :O

  • one of the best guitarists on america!

  • in the world.

  • He needs to play with Tommy Emanuel

  • i love his guitar face.

    lawl

    John's still sexy

  • Wow he's playing a dreadnought! That surprises me. As always, an amazing vid JM.

  • he intended that the six string was a C!!! please, it's obvio

  • hes freakin out

  • The E string tuned down to C is completely out of tune but he has made so many great performances of the song that this doesn't make doubt about his talent!!!! It's probably a tuning mistake and I think he noticed it and didn't make the solo last forever like usual because of that...

  • please tell me you are joking....

  • I agree, that low string is very out of tune. Almost hurts to listen to the song. (By the way, I know that the string is meant to be tuned to C, I'm just saying that for a C, it's very out of tune!)

  • Its in tune lol....

  • Comment removed

  • i dint like the sound of the bass on 1:07-1:13..

but all in all excellent performance..

  • yeah something sounds kinda out of tune or something:S

    good tune tho

  • he did that on purpose man

  • You're right...all the chicks in the front row screaming for him. That IS pretty gay. Thank you selinopyrinikos for the enlightenment.

  • you have no respect for homosexuality. you're going straight to fucking heaven, asshole.

  • his voice is unique and amazingg.

    i love his music.

    he's talented.

    he's great.

    :)

    (:

  • which date does the show have?

  • he always looks like he is about to throw up on the mic.

  • oh his guitar is flat too

  • i think i know y he keeps his hair long ... to hide those golom ears

  • effing amazing i think his face expressions are kinda funny tho haha

  • best is where the light is

  • dead right

  • he plays so much cleaner in this version than in the otheres

  • still pretty cool...

  • u r great man i get in 2 this song so much when ur down it make want 2 dance!!!! XD

  • he was just answering a question someone else asked. he never said that made for a good guitarist.

  • Good guitarists still learn the basics first for the most part. I guess prodigys can just pick up an instrument and rock out but I think most of us take hundreds of hours of study and practice before we develope the ability to "feel" the music like a good guitarist.

  • Yeah he is doing slaps on the bass string and then basically doing guitar sweeps for the rest. its pretty much amazing.

  • how does he pick? i can't follow!!

  • es genial y todo... pero porque las muecas? tan ebrio estaba?

  • your ass bitch

  • and what exactly are you basing your stupid ass opinion on, man?

  • hes fucking crazy good. u no how hard it is to play this?>

  • it depends it take more time than most of his normal songs but if you practice the main riff slow then build up speed you pretty much have the song done

  • omg, he can sing and play like crazy even whilst drunk

  • HOLY FREAKING SHIT!!! OUCH!!! i've tried playing this a thousand times and it's impossible... how the hell does he do it...

  • I think his guitar is about out of tune, yikes. On a live performance that must be nerve racking.

  • He's in drop C

  • More like 3:06 haha so funny! SUCH A GOOD SONG!!!

  • p.s. pause at 3:05. Lolz for guitar faces

  • looooooooool hahahahhaha

  • i have the picking pattern perfect, and i can play the verse and chorus pretty much perfectly,

but i cant read tabs, and the other chords are tough for me to hear by ear, so i made up some weird chords that sound just like the ones he is using, and they fit.

    but

a link to some of these crazy chord fingerings would be much appreciated!

  • ultimate guitar has some good tabs, learn how to read tabs, it'll take u a minute or 2

  • one of his strings is off!!!!

  • awesome!!!

  • he can play and sing bro hes amazing

  • not just the slapping is a tuning problem... often it will still hold.. but considering the entire audience area is dark and theres spotlights straight on him... those big lights put off a lottt of directed heat... and that heat will often cause instruments to go flat.. which is what im guessing is the case since it was already getting out of tune right at the start.

  • When you play like that a acoustic slaping it and gripping it hard the will get out of tune i heard this first ime other day think i might learn looks fun to play

  • omg this song perfectly describes my best friend Liz!!! Crazy. She is always, always coming and going and this song should have been written for her. I love me some JMay! Always a fan!!!

  • any1 know where i can find the mp3 for the acoustic version

  • if u really want it, message me your email and i'll send it.

  • yeah the chords are sweet. But dissonant chords still need their notes to be tuned well (and they are not always in this song). I love the chorus chords with the 6 as the bass note.

  • I'm just pointing out he messed up because it's a testament to the difficultly of this amazing song, and that even with the skill of john mayer, one of the best and my favorite guitar players, it's still possible to mess up. Point - he's amazing, this song is amazing and incredibly difficult, and I love you.

  • oh and wen u tipe on the computer its calleed i.m. lingo no body feels like spelling every word right who cares.

  • Yes itfgill7 soooooooooooo if he admitted to messing up then you dont have to do it for him wats yur piont in telling everyone he messed up so wat id like to see u play that song.

  • I'll go with that. At least you can hear that the notes sound out of tune, even if the open notes are in tune. But I don't understand why his other acoustic neons sound so much more in tune...

  • Alot of the chords are dissonant

so they sort of intentionally clash, to build the chord structure of the song to make it more interesting.

  • If you notice when he hits an open C it's fine. When he frets notes and really gets into he that C string drifts. But screw it, damn fine tune.

  • I'll settle this since none of you seem to know what the hell you are talking about. His guitar IS in tune however John uses dropped C tuning for this song. Now what happens when you use dropped C is that your lowest string becomes more slack than it would at standard pitch. Since John is playing the E string (now low C)with his thumb that creates an awkward situation for the rest of the hand in the string with the least bit of tension moved a little easier than the rest of the smaller strings.

  • Also, spellcheck is a great tool to utilize.

  • Here I go...

-John Mayer performed with a slightly out of tune guitar. If you cannot hear it, I am sorry for you. If you listen to every other neon performance of his, the guitar sounds different (aka more in tune). Compare. If you still can't tell, that's unfortunate.

-He OBVIOUSLY messed up the end, but you, hallaina384, didn't read the end of my comment . If you watch the other Neon performance, he SAYS in the middle of the song "i told you i would mess it up". He's human.

  • i was talking to itfgill7 just to let u no john mayer is awsome

  • q hijo de puta no puede tocar asi y cantar al mismo tiempo

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhhh i love john mayer!!!!!!1

  • man no matter how much i practice i cant slap that g string like mayer

  • guitar line is really good

  • thank you, softball. thank you

  • god u people are so stupid! why would he preform with an out of tune guitar? do u think hes people would put him out their with an out of tune guitar! why would anyone preform with an out of tune guitar! god u retards!

  • He's definitely slightly out of tune. It is quite apparent during the "she comes...". And he messes up the very very last part. But who cares because he's amazing.

  • y would john mauer mess up and who r u to kritasice him

  • he's not out of tune. he does play a few duff notes but I can honestly say playing something like this and singing it that well at the same time is in human anyway so I have nothing but respect for this performance.

  • he wasn't out of tune. his low e is tuned to drop C.

  • wat a song!!

  • what is the thing he put across the soundhole that kind of looks like a pickup? that black thing that
