DON'T LET THEM GO!!! Blackened Redfish is to die for!!! I have a recipe for seasoning that is out of this world! I go to Matagorda at least once a month until October then I am there every weekend. The BEST Texas fishing I know of.

I just use the simple two hook leader with a 4-6oz spider weight on the bottom. You can find those leaders everywhere down near the gulf. I usually use a 3.0 - 4.0 circle hook. Usually fish with fresh dead shrimp, or mullet live or cut.

@zmill33 just the basic two hook leader with the weight on the bottom. they sell them all over the place down around the gulf. I put on a 4-8 ounce spider weight depending on the surf, and usually just some fresh shrimp, or mullet for bait.

Good eating size slot red there. Throw some medium size mullet cut in half with a 3-4oz spider weight for some bull reds and black drum. Bull reds will fight like Mike Tyson, but black drum give up pretty quick. You can upgrade to 30-50lb gear and pull 6-7 sharks out of the surf.

nice great fishing man :) never caugth a red but i have caught plenty of speckled sea trout at the pirates landing pier in port isabel. using some glow in the dark lures. im going fishing soon to south padre island surf fishing any tips on how to fish for some red man what kinda line to use?? thanks.

i'm about 37 miles from matagorda ...yes! They have some good fishing ...Nice eating size redfish ...I've caught many of bull reds !! lol..What a blast to hook on to one!! I'm sure you know that feeling ...and drums and sheephead are another favorite to catch ...speaking of teeth ...sheephead sure do have a set of those!!

Nice going Man. But when holding a Trout, make sure your hands are wet if you're releasing it, and it was unfortunate you didn't get anything surf size, because those fish are all bay size. You have the dedication, keep it up man, Fishing is the best, Especially in texas.

i envy you guys down there i just starting surf fishing here in cali havent caught anything near that big or fight that hard only really got perch :( usin a 7foot med action ugly stick with a penn suarga 4000 reel using 8lb mono thinking about swaping to braid tho as i just seem to be fishing sand bottom and cant cast that far out what kind of setup your using there?

cool. im on a quest to catch a shark too from the surf. but im down in galveston. so far ive lost 2 sharks cause i kept my drag to loose, but now i learned to keep it tight. ive reeled in mullet heads, and its made me angry.

Cool man....I love to fish matagorda and surfside beach. But you really need a fishing buddy if you are going to be on the beach alone at night, there are some crazy people that cruz the beaches at night just looking for trouble. My buddy is my son and 40 cal S&W lol.

ohh thanks man! ive never really fished with shrimp.but ill try it! ohh by the way im in my sisters acount lol. ohhh and if you wanna catch some more of them speckled trout you should use like 3 inch mullets and trow them out. me and my dad cought a bunch and they were all big trout about 30 inches long! you just gotta walk into the water till your stomach.

thanks! Yeah mainly just shrimp, its simple and cheap! I caught some mullet too, but cant remember if I caught any reds on them. Mainly just shrimp.

Hey Eddie,

If you would have used the heads of the whiting you may have caught a decent shark. (Whiting heads are like candy for Sharks)

Next time you hook a bait that big hook it near the tail like you did on its back but thread it through and then hook it in the back this way if the shark misses your hook it will still bite the leader and increase your hookup chances.

last time i was shark fishing in matagorda a shark completely spooled us. It took the line so fast it had to be near a 10 footer. keep trying man. try using sting ray for bait and kayak it out a ways if possible.

Yeah I had a smaller sting ray for bait, but never used it. My brother was bringing a yak down that weekend so we could get the rays out further, but a bad storm came in and he never made it out, and I ended up leaving a few days early then planned. Next time though, im getting a yak, and a shark!

well i suppose so, I dont use that heavy of braid, but I dont see why not. I mean if you get something big enough it will just either break your line, or spool ya.

I have fished savannah before, I love it there, got to be the coolest looking city in the world (where the moss is hanging from the trees) I was at tibie island (or how ever its spelled). Didnt catch much though, but it was nice there. I like matagorda texas because you can drive up the beach for 20 miles, so you can always be miles from another person on the beach!
