@6004billabong It's not paragliding, it's hang gliding.

And that's a reserve parachute so you don't fall to your death if you get in an accident.

Well, when I talked to him afterward he said he was a low airtime pilot. His left wingtip hit the paraglider pilot's hand/risers and he thought that his flexwing was going to spin out so he threw the reserve. With more airtime experience I am sure he would have not done it. He actually almost floated over the back of the hill in windy rotor conditions but the rotor curling back brought him down on the hill and saved him.
