  • I have a propane tank and would love to turn my into one of these. How do I do it though? Like get rid of all the gas and tune it?

  • @Timmy4pawz You really should not use a propane tank that has ever been used...even a slight bit of remaining fumes can cause an explosion that you don't want to be part of...only cut into brand new, never used tanks

  • @GnEeErKd you can use old ones you just have to fill them with water.unscrew the taps on them and fill them through the hole...that way you force whatever gas is left out.

i do it to make gas bottle wood burners.

  • @Timmy4pawz What I do to ensure that a tank is empty: using a tank that has run out of propane, slowly remove the top valve fitting using a wrench. Before cutting into the tank, bring it outside to a place with good ventilation and fill it with water. The water will displace any remaining propane out of the tank.

  • any one got info on how to make one..i have somewhat of an idea know yah need to use a new tank yah don't wanna blow you ass up....:)

  • @chiledoug The info is in the description. Theres also several tutorials on youtube on how to make one.

  • I cannot for the life of me find any never-filled propane tanks. Is there a way to buy them online or anything?

  • damn latency on the video makes it impossible to see what you're playing! Anyhow, thanks for your notes on your design variation. Now if only my jigsaw will cooperate...

  • @GalitUnggoy Yea, I meant to make a new video that had the audio and video line up better...this video was really meant to be a proof of concept, but it got a lot more attention than I expected, haha...oh well, thanks for watching!

  • @GnEeErKd

I actually feel compelled to come back often for the audio quality alone. It sounds pretty good! Wish I had this on MP3...

  • @GalitUnggoy Looks like I might have to make some new recordings and start releasing MP3s, haha...stay tuned, it might just happen!

  • @GnEeErKd

I cannot for the life of me find any never-filled propane tanks. Is there a way to buy them online or anything?

  • @captainwiggles777 you should be able to get one from your local propane dealer

  • @captainwiggles777 I went to lowes and they had 2 unfilled tanks hidden on a bottom shelf back behind some stuff...Nobody ever looks for them, so you have to find the right person to ask at lowes, but you might have similar luck...

  • how do you get the right notes? or do they all just mesh in to one.did you tune one to a or e or d? is it a scale.,mode ect? very interesting

  • @auntygomez I attempted to make it into a B major scale but ended up modifying it and skipping a couple notes. This gave the drum a much larger range of tones, not to mention the bass note on the side. Getting the notes right is a lot of trail and error and patience with a saw.

  • this is f-ing creative

  • This is Great! Excellent drum, and Excellent Rhythm! Now...how much would you charge someone to make them one? lol

  • I can't afford a hang drum, a Hapi drum, a Milltone, a Rockcreek, a Turtle Pan, or an Eclipse drum, but I might be able to get a old propane tank. I didn't believe it was possible to make a good tune without investing a lot of money into it, but you've given me hope. Keep it rocking!

  • Outstanding!!! Rocks .I have come back 2x for this. going a try to get it on my facebook page!

    Slim49

  • Outstanding!!!

I am in process of making this Mod!!

have made the original, its remarkable. did a cool south western 3 color paint job.

BTW: the trick of grinding the back in 1/2 of sabor saw blade ROCKs. plus , a touch of grease every minute helps with the small turns.

    great sound.

guitar pro 6 demo has a super digital tuner under tools.

    Slim

  • sounds nice. is that an old refrrgerant cylinder?

  • @tkarmakid Thanks! nope, its a propane tank that has never been filled

  • SO clever!

  • Dude,, That is one freakin sweet drum you made.

  • @mrtesj thank you very much!

  • which song is it @ 0:17 i think i can hear something ^^

  • @maximax217 Well I didn't intend to imitate any songs, so I'll take that as a compliment, haha...if you figure it out, let me know!

  • @GnEeErKd its really nice so i thought there is something =) btw hank drum with bass is much better ! ^^

  • easily the best thing ever

  • I like the sound, better than hang drum.

  • well, thank you very much! :-)

  • Thank you for posting this AND the link to makeing your own drum. After reading the link, I am ready to try makeing one myself. Just can't bring myself to dropping big $ for an instrument that I may not get the hang off, again. Your post and link are just what every beginer needs. A cheap beginer instrument is what it takes to make an instrument popular and bring out the hidden talent of the people and show the versatility of the instrument...Thanks again.

  • @mrtesj no problem, always glad to help! let me know if you have any questions!

  • awesome

I`m definitely gonna try to make 1 my self

    this is really inspiring

  • sweet

  • @funkmunky25 thanks!

  • This sounds great with the modifications. Does this work basically the same way as a hang drum? I was wondering whether the original hang has something inside it to create the sound it does or if it's just hollow inside like the hank.

  • as far as I know, the real hang drum is hollow on the inside and the notes are hammered into it rather than cut out of it like they are on the hank drum

    thanks for the compliments :-)

  • I just finished tracing all the tabs on my hank drum...I will have someone scan this in for me and post it on here as soon as I can

  • tuning is done by cutting the tongue longer for lower and shaving off the end for higher...i used a computer program and a microphone to tune mine

i am playing with normal knit gloves in that video...i have tried with bare hands, mallets, gloves, rubber bands wrapped around my fingers...i personally like the knit gloves the best because it gives a nice soft sound and has the same feel as bare hands...but thats all personal taste

  • thanks for all the comments, guys...i must have missed my emails because i didnt realize so many people were commenting, haha...

thank you for all the kind words, his might sound better, but I was recording with a little 3 dollar computer microphone i had laying around, haha...

i dont have the pattern and im living away from where that drum is right now so i cant make a pattern, very sorry, but it is based off dennis's, i just changed the pitches a little

  • what are you playing the drum with? rubber gloves? how do mallots sound with this?

  • Hy!

Im from Slovakia, and i want to make my own hank drum. Can you please tell me what are the parameters of single panels, and when i made the instrument, how i can tune it? Thank you for your answer!

    Barnabás

  • Beautiful!! I would like to make one too!

  • Beautiful! I love that you added a base note--any chance of getting a pattern posted? Do you have a website?

  • Sounds great, though Dennis's might sound better, or maybe it's just the recording equipment. I do like that bass note. Sure looks fun, I want to make one too.

  • WOW that was great i loved it!!! now i want one HEHEHEHE

  • Fuckin n kick ass bro !!!

    Awesomeness!!!

  • thanks for checkin it out, if you click "more info" at the top right, there is information about the original design if you are interested in making ur own

  • how is this instrument built? how do you make the tunning? I want to make my own.

  • this sounds sooo sweet! I like the song you made up. The only problem is that when I watch the video, it totaly doesn't match up with the sound. Is it like that on the original or just mine?

  • nope, unfortunately thats just how it exported and i was too lazy to fix it...i intended for this video to be something i was going to show my friends so i didnt really care about the audio being synchronized, i had no idea i would get 35,000+ views and have one of the top hank drum videos, haha. Thanks for your compliment!

  • Brilliant. Just perfect! It sounds unbelievable - beautiful! :D

I wish I could make such a drum, but I don't have the the tools, the skills, anything... I'd be able to play it for sure, but to make it... I envy you, haha. x)

  • the ending part is awesome

  • thank you! I like to just play by feel and see what comes out, haha, I'm glad you like it

  • HANK HILL! OMG that is too funny!

    Dang it Bobby!

  • could you make a video or just explain to me how you modified this to get the extra lower bass note because that seems like a nice note to have. and also great video

i love the sound of these drums.

  • all i did to modify it was cut a tongue along the side of the tank just like the ones on top but bigger

  • oh also if i tune mine and then paint over it will it effect the sound

  • it affects the sound a bit, but i dont think it makes it sound worse...look up painted ones on youtube...u can hear a difference but i kind of like it...

  • hey what notes are on a d minor? please help

  • D minor is D, E, F, G, A, Bb (B-flat), C.

i think the hank drums are tuned in the minor pentatonic, which is the same thing just without the E and the Bb

  • dsdd

  • is it called a hank drum cuz of hank hill? lol

  • hahaha...I don't believe so, lol...I think its a mix between HANg drum and propane tANK...but I like your connection better

  • actually its some other guy who made the drum (hank)

  • WOW, that is amazing, you really have an ear for tuning those notes! I have a rusted out on one side propane tank on my tenttrailer, I am going to check out that link. Thanks Drummer Dude!

  • i dont recommend using a tank thats been filled before and if its rusted out on one side it might not work very well...but good luck!

  • Bellissimo! (Italy)

  • hello! you have the tunnig? how you make the modified hank?thank a lot im from chile!!

  • hey! i used a B major scale but moved some of the notes around so it isnt actually a scale...the only major modification I made to the original design is the extra note on the side which was a low B or E I believe...I also used weather stripping on the side instead of bungee cords...I highly recommend checking out the original design at the link posted in my video's info...there are good instructions there for how to make one...thanks for checking out my video!

  • thank you everyone for your comments...if anyone has any questions or wants advice, shoot me a message and ill be glad to help out!

  • lol i love it! economy hang drum =P

  • Beautiful... love the tuning!

  • DOOOOOD!!!!

    That is really beautiful.

As soon as I can I'm making one.

Thanks for being brave and experimenting with dhavenas design.

You've given me the inspiration I need to make my own unique drum.

    What a gift.

    Peace

  • Did you cut out a larger slit(for lack of a better word) on the side next to your bass tongue? or is it just paint?

  • thats weather stripping which is what i used in place of bungee cords on the original design...its there to absorb extra resonating sounds and such...just makes it a little cleaner

  • ok thanks! i might try and modify mine in the same manner. with a low d on the side. thanks.

  • hey, bro', that drum is really a gas! (LOL)

  • haha, thank you

  • How exactly do you tune it? I made one out of a freon tank today, but I just freehand cut it, how would I go about fine tuning it?

  • get an instrument tuner or a computer with a microphone and tuner software and find out if u are higher or lower than ur desired note...if you need to go lower, lengthen the cuts little by little and re-check the tuning each little cut...if you need to go higher, cut a little off the end of the tongue itself...just keep checking and work slowly...patience is key in tuning it, and as you tune one note, all the others will shift...you just have to be careful, work slow, and take your time

  • compliments!!

    supa well done!!

  • beautiful indeed :)

  • beautiful

  • thank you

  • Hi!! That's a really nice song. I like your modification. What is your scale on that drum, (can you tell me how it goes from right to left)?

    Cheers :)

  • its a modified B major scale, actually...from low to high it is as such:

-low E on the side- top:B,E,F#,G#,A#,B,C#,D#

i realize that it isnt really a scale because i skipped the first octave of C# and D# and put them in as the next octave higher after the high B...its just another way mine is different from everyone else's, haha

im not sure what u mean by right to left...the notes go in a pattern like this on the top

    -----B----- low B

    --C#---D#--

    A#--------B high B

    --F#---G#--

    -----E-----

  • thanks for your compliments as well :-)

  • is that big cutout on the side a bass note? THat's really well done. It should sound wonderful recorded with two contact mics for stereo + some delay efects... Can't wait to build my own.

  • yes, thats a low E, an octave lower than the E i have on the top, thank you...i did some work with looping and delay effects and all that sort of stuff, it works out pretty well and sounds good but i didnt post any of that on youtube...i need to work on that some more, haha...good luck on building your own, i hope it turns out well!

  • That sounds great. It's a dream-like melody

  • thank you!

  • This is actually quite entertaining. Nice song. I plan on making one of these. So, what did you use to make the cuts and how do you not blow yourself up?

  • haha, thank you!...the cuts were started on a straight section with a dremel/rotary tool and then continued with a sabre saw and modified blade....check the how-to in the info for this movie...the propane tank is brande new, never been filled...do NOT use a previously filled propane tank...good luck on your building!

  • Yeah, I was fondling the idea of leaving the old one open for a week or two, but then I watched some youtube videos of explosions and I changed my mind. Maybe I can exchange it for a discount on a new one.

  • Yeah that's a bad idea, propane is heavier than air so it will settle in the tank. To do it properly you need to purge the tank with an inert gas, best leave it to the professionals and just use a new tank, it's only 30 bucks.

  • Yeah, the risk of death isn't worth saving $30. I'll just buy a new one.

  • or just get an old freon tank...

  • good plan, i did something similar using a computer as a live loop sampler and distortion...i made some pretty cool trippy techno-ish music and want to start doing performances in coffee shops and such...unfortunately i havent had time for my hank drum lately...good luck though, i suggest experimenting with a program called ambiloop...its free and works pretty nicely...all you need is a different mic into ur computer

  • ...and by different i mean decent...my bad

  • Hi! Congratulations for your project, it turned out great. the bass note was a good idea but wow did you find out what size the tongue should have?

and that cut you made on the side is for the bass to be louder?

    I´m starting mine this weeckend.

  • thank you! For the bass note on the side, we started with a larger diameter of circle than any of the other top tongues...then just started cutting down and checking the pitch every little cut until it was at the right pitch...

turns out that the side note will refuse to hit the right frequency until u get past the weld line...then it just DROPS into the bass ranges...its very strange

  • thank you for your explanation. in europe the tanks are diferent than yours in US, they´re thinner and taller so lets see how the bass and all the other notes turn out.

  • that should be interesting, haha...let me know how it turns out, im curious now

  • D, i would like mine, is it difficult to build one ?

  • the cutting part itself isnt that bad, the hardest part in my opinion was getting the valve off the bottom (top) and tuning...if you take ur time and just do it properly, it shouldnt be too hard...just be prepared to put a few hours into it

  • sweet. ive been waiting for someone to play a full song on one of these homemade hangs. sounds amazing.

  • thank you....not really a song, mostly just messin around, but yea, i noticed a lot of the other vids arent very long...its a good project and i like how it turned out

  • i think you did a great job.......dennis will be pleased.....i think...and you obviously play percussion well.... nice one !

  • thanks for the good words...ive been in contact with dennis and showed him the modified design...

and yes, ive been playing percussion since i was 5 and am the lead percussionist in our school

  • Amazing!

  • great sound, mann is dass schöön.your hang is lovely

  • Too cool! Love the notes on the side.

  • Thank you! the best part is, it only cost $30 at the hardware store rather than $2000 to get a real hang drum from Switzerland! haha, I have enjoyed this experiment very much and plan to add another bass note on the other side
