  • One of the best if not the best versions of this song i've ever heard, better than Barbra streisand's i think. I remember watching this live in '73 and marveling at the performance.

  • This performance sealed the crown for Terry. Everyone watching knew then and there who the new Miss America would be. Most impressively, she chose a Barbra Streisand song and did not imitate Barbra Streisand at all!

  • terry could have ended the number at about 3:00 mark with the orchestra, but holds the note to 3:09.

  • warning: this performance will get stuck in your head...one of the best ever!

  • I remember seeing this in 1972 for Miss America 1973.She was actually a professional singer with the Christie Minstrels, but there were no rules against professionals against amatures.I really liked her and came close to meeting her.I didn't know she was in Richmond,Va. and when I got my car inspected at a shopping mall,I saw an autographed picture of her and they aid she had been there. If only I had known in advance. It was in May of 1973.

  • absolutely incredible!!!!!!!

  • One of the most memorable singing performance, of A Ms America

  • It is so great to see my mom back when she was Miss America. I smile every time I watch her. Thanks to all who post videos of my mother, I love having memories like these that last a lifetime.

  • I was about 7 yrs old and I remember watching this...I thought she was so gorgeous. I'm amazed watching these old videos, the ladies actually had a little meat on their bones, not just stick thin like so many today. I watched a state level pageant and one girl was so thin, the audience gasped when she walked out in her swimsuit.

  • watch and listen to her 'turn up the volume' at about 1:55...

    amazing!

  • What a dynamic performance; not just in terms of vocal ability, but also her ability to communicate so well with her audience. What emotion and charisma!!!!!

  • Back when talent was actually worth something. I hate the fact that they devalued talent in the last 20 years.

  • This was beautiful I remember this on tv.

  • I got chills when she sang this in '72, and it was completely obvious she would win. Got chills again listening to it tonight--thanks for sharing this, Jonrose44; it was a moment of sheer magic.

  • Being an AC native and catching 'pageant fever' each September, I knew that Terry was going to win the crown that night. If I recall Miss Wisconsin won one of the preliminary talent contests the second night the of contest. Jonrose44, many thanks for posting this beautiful video. It has brought back such beautiful memories of that September Miss America Pageant week and Saturday night.

  • She held that note for 15 seconds!

  • She sings with joy. Yay Terry.

  • i'm always wondering about the outfit...is she supposed to be a bobby-soxer?

  • Don't think so. But saddle shoes became popular in the early 70's as did a lot of 50's garb and culture.

  • LOL-Had more to say on Miss Iowa, but went beyond My limit. Renee Studemann was a baton twirler, using 3 batons. Perhaps the crowd was still dazed by Terry, but Renee's performance was nothing less than spectacular. She never missed a beat, never dropped one of the 3,and is still the fastest batonests I've ever seen. Her ovation was thunderous and also stopped the show. 1972-one of the high points in Miss A history!

  • Those women had talent in those years.

  • Jonrose;Indeed, thanks for sharing. Have not missed a Miss A since '58(have all the tapes since'57!),and only one girl came close to Terry-Linda Loftis,Miss Texas In '61(3rd runnerup).I'm as spellbound watching Terry today as I was in Sept.'72. BTW:Terry was 9th in the talent line-up that year;poor, little Miss Iowa had to follow her,and HOW do you follow THIS performance?

  • Wow...you've seen all the shows since 1958....I was only 3 years old then, but have seen every show since 1969.....so sad to see what the show has become today, and it was once an American Icon.

  • @fognhaze Fine mother son hope you meet or met a woman as Classy

  • @fognhaze Hey Jon, Do you have Linda Loftis' talent to post? Many thanks!!!!

  • Watch especially from 1.51 through the end - something truly magical happens to this wonderful performance that you will never ever forget! He definitely was touching Terry that night!

  • yes, that's when she puts it into high gear...how she holds that final note SO long, i'll never know...

  • shes gorgeous with alot of talent.

  • This is my friend's aunt.

He was from Ukraine like some of Terry's kids.

He told me about her and I thought he was lying but it turned out to be true.

Terry brought Peter back to Ukraine, Peter is the friend, so he could do better in school :)

Terry is a nice person through Peter's words.

  • She is a beautiful person inside and out. Always loved her on tv and everything she stands for :).

  • For grins tonight I did a search on Terry's performance in the pageant and much to my surprise and delight someone (thank you jonrose) had posted this. My parents were with hers at Atlantic City, saw this live and to this day my mom has wanted a copy of this performance. Both of our moms are now suffering from Macular Degeneration, but they can still hear and will be thrilled with this. Thanks a million - Terry's Cousin. I'm sending her this link! lol :o)

  • Thank You for your comments and information, I am so glad you did the search and found this clip. This performance was my all time favorite from the pageant...Terry was perfection in this performance...it was divine.

  • What a touching post! How wonderful that your mom will be able to hear this again. I too heard this years ago as a young woman and now I am a senior citizen (practically) and I never ever forgot this performance; truly etched in my heart. Thank you again JonRose44 for this wonderful post - a true testiment to the wonder of YouTube!

  • thanks, dana - i have passed this on to Terry and all of our family, lots of smiles and great memories for us all. Terry was amazed someone had this still, we all were! then again, my best friend at that time wrote me back that she still has the Miss Am button my parents brought back and the program they got for her. Terry gave us all a thrill, she is so gracious about this 'history'. i just love to hear her sing; she still has such a beautiful voice.

  • Thank you so much Sympatico4u; I would be thrilled if I knew Terry found out how much her performance affected so many people back then and up to the present and how she brought so much joy to us!

  • OMG..i was blown away...I have NEVER heard anything like this before..she literally had me spellbound! Thanks for posting..

  • Yes, this was an amazing performance by Terry Meeuwsen....no wonder she won the crown that year!!!!! Terry Meeuwsen rules !!!!

  • what's the guy say just after bert introduces her as 'miss wisconsin?' listen...maybe you can decipher it...

  • listen to her hold that last note for an incredible 15 seconds! watch the counter clock if you don't believe...

  • if you didn't know, terry's not singing about her boyfriend, it's about her Lord.

  • i can't quit playing this video over and over...PERFECTION in anything deserves a second look or even more!

  • Hey me too! I love to play this over and over; just enjoy it so much. I think there even was some divine intervention there in her performance, making it impossible for her not to win the title!

  • victortalkingmch, me too! I keep watching it over and over again. I never tire of it. Enjoy it every time. I truly believe God had His hand in this performance. I never forgot the first time I saw this, 35 years ago live

on TV. It gives me goose bump!!!!

  • not only did terry win her preliminary TALENT competition, she also won her SWIMSUIT competition, too. one of the rare 'miss americas' who earlier were double winners in the prelims. she deserved everything, and got it!

  • Yes she did win in both competitions, and with that voice and talent how could she not have won the title, she brought the house down that night after her performance.

  • I forgot to mention that Terry Ann can be seen on a religious TV show these days, looking very conservative. Also, after listening to her sing "He Touched Me" on this video, I think she even blew away Barbra Streisand's version of the same song. Yup, no more Miss America talent like this any more!

  • Yes, I catch her the 700 Club every now and then and she's on another talk show called "Living the Life" in some areas on cable. She's still a radiant and beautiful lady.

  • Oh My Goodness! As a 53 year old woman, I still recall with fond memories Terry Ann's thrilling performance of this song when I was very young and never forgot it; to be able to see it now again after all these years makes me feel like I've stepped back in time. Thank you so much for allowing me to relive this again!!!!

  • I'm so glad you enjoyed, she was indeed the most talented Miss America in my view. This performance set a new standard for the talent competition, Terry raised the bar after this for sure.

  • Wow. Terry had pipes huh? Thanks for posting.

She should have gone to Broadway with that voice.

  • Thank you so much for putting the Terry Meeuwsen clips here! For the past year and a half I have been searching YouTube for this specific video hoping that someone somewhere would have felt it was as great a moment as I did, and somehow would have had access to the clip. Her fantasic voice and the length of time she held the final note "blew me away" back in '73. You have made my day! Sara

  • I am so glad you found this and happy you enjoyed. It was the best talent competition moment ever in the show's history...incrediable and unforgettable performance from Terry. We'll never see her likes again as a Miss America.

  • Poor Soncee Brown (Miss Missouri 1992...(although Soncee had the best recovery ever and her last three notes were on target)...If Terry received the first standing ovation ever it was very well deserved, but in 1994 Heather Whitestone received the second after she performed her ballet (I was in Convention Hall and can attest to this). Thank you again, so much!

  • Thank you! I remember this from the night it aired and haven't seen it since! This is the best 4th of July ever! Thank you so much!

  • Glad you enjoyed, this was the best display of talent ever on a Miss America show. Terry received the only standing ovation ever after she sang this song.
