If you look at the US military in the 60's, 70's, and even 80's there were people constantly arguing that we could win a nuclear war. During the Cuban missile crisis the generals wanted to attack Cuba. If JFK had agreed to do it it almost certainly would have been nuclear war because the Soviets already had tactical nukes on the island.

It is clear why Nato did not assist Georgia, and it has nothing to do with being a "pawn." Georgia is not a Nato member. The reason provided by Nato was the unresolved conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. If Georgia were a Nato member, it would have been defended.
Russia is much worse to her friends than to her enemies. If you consider the history of the USSR, the USSR almost always invaded friendly regimes that weren't quite friendly enough. It is dangerous to be Russia's friend.

Given that Georgia still wants to fight and go after the two provinces, Russia is justified in staying awhile and demilitarizing Georgia. And random killings or provocations don't justify fighting a war, especially against civilians.
