If you look at the US military in the 60's, 70's, and even 80's there were people constantly arguing that we could win a nuclear war. During the Cuban missile crisis the generals wanted to attack Cuba. If JFK had agreed to do it it almost certainly would have been nuclear war because the Soviets already had tactical nukes on the island.

It is clear why Nato did not assist Georgia, and it has nothing to do with being a "pawn." Georgia is not a Nato member. The reason provided by Nato was the unresolved conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. If Georgia were a Nato member, it would have been defended.
Russia is much worse to her friends than to her enemies. If you consider the history of the USSR, the USSR almost always invaded friendly regimes that weren't quite friendly enough. It is dangerous to be Russia's friend.

In fact, Ossetian militia killed Georgian police and civilians on August 1, six days before Georgia attacked. Georgia was provoked.

Bigger problem Energy source battle is overlooked. Russia has plenty energy resources, but Russia is greedy & has high aims to dominate the world. Nothing less but the world domination is Russia's target. EU is already dangerously dependable on Russians who have very poor technology. It needs foreign investments & foreign technology to get most of the Oil. It has shared rights on arctic oil and Russia repetitively tricks foreign investors out of their share when they invest in these endeavors.

Recently only oil Pipe line that Russia has no influence was completed In Georgia. This pipe line was the first, others had to follow. For Georgia this pipeline is good investment plus Georgia does not want to give a chance to Russia to dominate the world, with pipe line or not Russia having full control of most of Eurasian Oil resources leaves to Georgia very little survival chance.

There is Oil in the North Caucasus that was main reasons of 1990s wars. Genocide etc. in 1985 3 km long & expensive Roki Tunnel was completed to connect Russia to Georgia. The disputed territory s. Ossetia is very poor and with very little population (all ethnicities) only reason Russia constructed expensive Tunnel by end of the soviet era to have close control of Georgia. With Today's pipeline this tunnel proves important for Russia and Tragic for Georgia.
