Hi there tried this but every time I try and copy the file it says the operation cant be completed because the hosts file is in use..silly question but how do I close it!? thanks!
This is a great and well expressed video. Unfortunately my hosts file does not have the line of text needed to edit. It only has this 127.0.0.1 localhost
thank you so much by doing this it helped me put my iphone into restore mode and i must be the only person in the world who has ever wanted to do this but......i wanted to unjailbreak my phone, THANK YOU SO MUCH
the reason i wanted to unjailbreak was because it messed up the signal on my phone
Anyone know if this works while trying to unlock a iPhone 4 running os 4.2.1 with modem firmware 03.10.01 and trying to unlock using Pwnagetool? Thank you.
IT WORKED FOR ME MAN, THANX! for those who can't modify the "host" because the finder says that there is not enough privileges to save it, here is SOLUTION: copy all the text and then paste it in a new document, then do what Macboy says and then go to "save as..." ofcourse you save it like "hosts" on the name and thats all, (you have to put every time accept authenticate and thats all) That worked for me, THANX AGAIN!
This is the entirety of my Host file: ## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost
This worked thanks. I had two lines at the bottom with the ...apple.com that I added # to. after some trial an error. I deleted the hosts folder before I replaced.
i originally posted this 3 months ago but of course it got buried. might help a couple of you: "to those people that get the message: "hosts is in use" simply trash the original and paste in the edited one! easy! works! go get sum ios5!"
this is what my Host file says. I added the "#" at the beginning, but it still does't work. is there anyone who could help? I've spent hours on this, and I feel like I am just one step away from restoring it.. ## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost # 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
my data/text in "hosts" look very different to yours, still i did everything like you, but my iMac told me (although i closed all Programs) that "hosts" is in use at the moment when i tried to replace it. need help! ;(
My own doesn't show the very last line and i tried everything can some please help because i assume that this works by reading the comments so can you guys please help me?
Wonderful. I tried the firmware download and recovery mode way to restore and had my phone stuck in recovery mode still saying I was ineligible for requested build. This fixed it in no time.
help me please in the host thing in the textedit it doesnt have anything that says apple or anything :( PLEASE HELP i just got it today and it is stuck in recovery mode :((
It worked, but I found out that i actually had 2 apple entries. The GS one. So I deleted the other one and kept the one that you showed in the video. I don't know why I had 2 of them. The second one had a different IP number. Weird. Thanks man!

@MrWtfover1 . On your Mac, open your Applications folder. 2. Navigate to the Utilities folder. 3. Open Terminal. 4. Type “sudo nano /etc/hosts” (without quotes) and press enter. 5. Enter your password 6. Use the down arrow key to find the gs.apple.com entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering # in front of the text. 7. Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O. 8. Press Enter 9. Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X. 10. DONE!
