These unprincipled louts would now be described as "bogans". I can't believe they'd be able to iron out 10 life savers though. The life savers in my day used to be barrel chested monsters who could crush skulls with their bare hands (not literally of course).
It was really stupid of 'Freda' to get into the van with those boys 'offering her a ride'. On the otherhand, I don't know any men/boys that behave that poorly with women. This really makes young Aussie males look terrible, and teenage courtship appear creepy and loveless. From my experience, it is completely inaccurate.
@yiqanuc If a girl WANTS DESPERATELY to be popular, then ... Mate, she'll do anything to be that. Freda couldn't get a boyfriend. Therefore, she settled for being the school Trollop, Tramp.
really confused how anyone could say they're 'proud to be australian' after watching a rape scene that pretty much highlights the misogynistic australian surf culture in the 80's and a moronic punch-on between a few clubbies and surfers.
@maddyrevenge For Australians this film means a lot. It was THEIR coming of age film, at a time when women's liberation hadn't really taken hold of this certain sub-culture ... yet.
Not condoning gang-banging or rape. I am just saying that men at THAT time, from THAT milieu behaved like this.
Actually, for the gang-rape scene's severity, the whole movie is considerably TAMER than the book ever was.
@GimmeKitty hey i lived during that time and dont recall guys gangraping everyone. thats something sydney had to wait for the 21st century to be the norm....

@lozzadearnley Yeah we did, look it up, I think it was around the 70's when we changed the kms.

This scene was telling. The point at which Sue and Debbie realised how FUTILE being in a surfie-girl gang really WAS!
