these guys MUST'VE influenced The KNife (euro band, not the genesis song). I remember seeing this in the 90s or 80s.....thank god you posted it. Thought it was on SNL though....but yeah....the residents were too cool for SNL.
@MarsilVendeur I'd have to disagree quite strongly on that. Key example: "Loss: Life Would Be Wonderful" from Demons Dance Alone. They've matured well, I'd say.
The growl does come across as limitation...the choice of it may be the same as only being able to look in a keyhole at a star...but it does eliminate a large slice of humanity at the same time...then again, it might have to do with the singers limits. Otherwise....miss you guys.
Its amazing that this was allowed to be presented on mainstream television. Same with that show nightflight. Occasional instances of seriously cutting edge stuff on comercial tv.
Night Music was the best music show of its toe. Thr Residents, this from their Elvis cover album, badoon The King with spangled obtuse scarlet fevers.

How'd like to wake up in the middle of the night, and see them in your living room? Saw this night of Conway Twitty and the Residents of David Sanborn's "Night Watch" tv show, and back up band were all ex miles Davis players. Including Dave as well....Good things don't Last very long on Tv.
The great thing about the whole Residents' "vibe" is how they simultaneously point out the banality of pop music, while simultaneously revealing deeper, psychologically dark undercurrents in the pop songs they chose to dissect.
Why oh why did Elvis do this? He looks and sounds terrible in this clip. His hair was usually beautifully sculpted and his voice was like a rackabilly angel. Here he looks far too made up, his hair is a disgrace and he sings and dances like a cunt. Oh Elvis.
I don't know but I'm pretty sure this vid portrays the dark meaning behind the upbeat Elvis version. The guy is begging his girlfriend to dominate him and she refuses to. The dancers(?) in the background show this, but that's just MHO.
It's about transforming Elvis into his core spirit - in terms of what he did for the spirit of music, anyway. For that every tidbit or hint at emotion or psychological significance is played up to an abstract extreme.
The entire show that this was a part of showed country music, blues music, and their fusion through rock n' roll and the King of it, Elvis.
Anyway, basically imagine yourself as say, hearing Elvis's music blasting at you stripped of any psychological defense mechanisms, such as during a dream/nightmare or as an extremely young child. It's the "force" of Elvis's songs hitting you smack in the face.
I tried as hard as I could not to reply to this obvious troll comment, but listen to meet the residents and then tell me they can't play. You just don't get what they are doing here.
Wow, The Residents actually appeared on a network TV show besides doing soundtracks. That's awesome. The King And Eye is such a great album. Their version of Viva Las Vegas is one of my favorite songs ever.
I've added this to my FB group dedicated to cover versions. It's called "The Guilty Pleasure of the Cover Version"

Supposedly, this is the performance that got Night Music cancelled.

@macho5097 Actually, the trick would be to buy the disc online and actually support the music you claim to love. Sorry, I'm an old fashioned fuck.

Watching newer Residents material is pretty painful. They didn't age well at all.

@MarsilVendeur It's a damn shame because everything up to at least '80 is next to perfect.
