played for the first time Live at this gig, travelled from Edinburgh and had the time of my life, SEXY STEPH,ALEX,JIMMY,HAMMY,THE BIG MAN,RAB,ADAM & LITTLE CHRIS
Nowhere near as good as the original 2004 demo/unreleased version. That 2004 version is one of the best u2 tracks this decade, this version falls short. The original chorus "love hears when I lie, love puts the blue back in my eye, love has gone again, then I'll be gone again" is much better. The "ripping the stitches" bridge to each chorus is not there either. Sounds like they've made this a 'radio edit' in order to make it a potential single.
@cameronj74 I totally agree with you, this version is too short it miss the bridges and one part before the solo part "I hear you talk... feeling nothing" and the finish part "Im alive, baby Im born again and again and again" but I have to sya that the chorus is much better this way.
I WAS THERE, WHAT A BLAST MY FAVOURITE SONG OF THE GIG, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE BOYS COME TO EDINBURGH NEXT YEAR, HOPE YOUR'E READING THIS LADS, YOU DONE GLASGOW LAST YEAR NOW COME TOO SCOTLANDS CAPITAL YOU CAN KIP AT MY PLACE ..LOL.
This song is dedicated to Alex,The bigman, Adam,Rab,Chris,Steph,Jimmy and me who made the trip from Edinburgh and saw an epic concert, All the best guys, we have great memories to last a lifetime. U2 you are the Greatest.
OK, just got back from listening to the demo and I do agree with the consensus: The demo is much better. Yes, it is longer, and maybe it would be more difficult to pull off live in a longer format, but "MOS" is a long song, too, and I find that to be a moving live performance. Anyway, in comparison to the demo, the "revised" version of "Mercy" shown here has a definite "commercial" aspect that takes away some of the soul of the original. 'Because, because' et al sounds like a jingle.
Although this shorter version isn't awful, to me it's not even close to the original. The Because Because part sounds more like early working lyrics than the original. The changes in the original were more dramatic and moving, IMO. I rate the original as one of the great U2 songs. I rate this one as an above average 21st centruy U2 song.
While I have yet to hear the supposedly superior demo version so many people have commented on, I do like this song as I hear it; I like Bono's sustained high vocals, it adds a lot of energy. The "because, because, because" part is catchy but the more I listen, it sounds a bit like it's trying too hard to be "conventional" for lack of a better term. It's like they've been scared off by the reaction to "No Line" and are looking for an obvious "hit." I liked the introspection of "No Line."
I must admit i'm more of a fan of the demo but its still a great piece of music, I also wonder if the band felt the original was a little too long for a stage performance?
Without the "rippin' the stitches" part leading into the chorus, this just doesn't work. That was such a brilliant part, a great transition from verse to chorus.
Tired of these people who knows everything about the band. Are you a self claimed artistic director of U2? If you never had the opportunity to listen to the "great demo", you would probably appreciate this version...It's just music, live music. Enjoy it!
Larry having a little fun on the drums there. Very nice. Still not as good as the demo version though. The demo was one of those songs that never let up and just kept driving. With the different chorus and tacked on solo (really not inspired at all) this version is more conventional. Good but just not as good.
@HaroldPeacocks so people don't have the right to dislike this version?? This version sucks ass....just admit it. They butchered an epic song....all so Bono can yell "because because because because because because BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH" This version is an insult to the demo
@dhide14 hahaha you say people have the right to dislike it then tell someone to just admit this versions sucks ass. You're obviously an arrogant prick.
@dhide14 You are so wrong! This is a great version and on Saturday night they completely nailed it. Great live, if you prefer the other version then listen to that instead and let us who appreciate it enjoy it for what it is - class!
Thank you Paris - a top, top night and the crowd were the best I've seen over many years!
When I think of Paris I think of paintings. Maybe he's talking about all the wonderful colours of art? Sounds like an observer doing a critique--What colour is this? He's very good at colours? He's loads of 'em.
I like the original better but I do like the ~ 'You wanna kill me and I wanna die, we're a perfect match you and I' ~ lyrics. Although did he once sing it ~'we're a match made in heaven you and I'~
allez voir mes videos je suis à 1 metre de bono juste devant la scene "U2 - stade de france - 18/09/2010- Beautiful day" , amaaazing live in stade de france !!
Not as good as the studio version. I don't like the fact that U2 needs to cut a great song down to make a radio hit. Plus lyrics like "we're a perfect match, you and I" are so stereotypical. I can imagine it being played during some cheesy 80s tv show montage or something. it's just one more song u2 has cut so people with short attention spans can digest it.
wow....listen to Bono at 2:31-2:34 He sure seems to be embracing this song and singing it with more power during this performance (compared to the first couple nights they played it....he was singing it quite carefully)
@dhide14 each to their own, but I thought they cut out some weak parts in the demo..i.e. the long 2:30 intro before the chorus, the weak part before the chorus on the original, has been cut out of the live version:
"I'm ripping the stitches We've got two hands to rub....", I never liked that part, then there is the extended outro, the song was over 6 minutes so it needed to be cut down and have a finish...I would agree regarding some of the original lyrics though...
@Thanksandy Yeah....this isn't a horrible version. I'm glad they're finally playing it live. I just miss a few parts of the original version....and I don't care for the lyrics "because because because....etc"
Thank you U2gigs, by the way - what recording device do you use? (fingers crossed that this will stay in the setlist we all know it had potential since its leak)

The original chorus and some lyrics are badly missed:
We're binary code/a one and a zero/you wanted violins/and you got Nero
Love is the end of history/The enemy of misery/Love has come again/I am gone again
Love is justice, not charity/Love brings with it a clarity/Love has come again
The song is better shorter, but they cut the wrong parts. Get rid of that awful 'because because because' part, it ruins the song!!
(I've said all this before, but I'm just praying the band sees it)
