  • i like old graphics better

  • I diasgree with neglecting manufactured goods. All it takes is a small town with a good food source or two (minimum) dedicated colonists for a profit usually 3X the worth of raw materials.

Hell, you don't even need the food source with trade routes.

  • lol I remember this game spent so much time playing it loved it!

  • I love this game (and the remake) even more than the Civ series. I also still have my old IE CD from the mid 90s. Nostalgia++

  • I miss this game so much. Played it again and again....

  • this was a great game, i played it over and over. i even translated it to Portuguese using the text files :)

  • 01:23 "but don't pay to train them" - I never recruit colonists, cause it gets too expensive later and makes the crosses less effective. Insead I always train ore miners for 600 gold (the cheapest unit), cancel their specialization and train into other units. My galleons travel constantly across the ocean with those miners. In the year 1640 I have 1321 points for colonists only :D

  • OH MAN, I had so much fun with this game! However, we had an illegal version (yeah, shoot me), and the game crashed if a Independent Father (or w/e the name was) was chosen. So, I had to press ESC every turn, not to pick a Father.

That sucked, because when you have 14 colonies, you had to press ESC 14 times. (AND I couldn't harvest the bonusses ;( )

  • Omg.. I remember sitting down translating the entire game into swedish through the config- and text-files just because i was bored.. lol.. This game is still one of the best there is..

  • BEST GAME EVER!

  • I'm playing Col right now :)

  • hmm

you saw early on not to build colonies on islands with less than 6 squares, not to build colonies with overlapping territory, and not to build too close to indians. However you final few strategic points and explanatory screen shots show all of these things being done for an advantage.

  • This is the best game I had when I had 386.Believe me people,if you haven't ever played this game,it is GREAT even now.It has enough complexity, and is fun. There is only one bad thing in the game:after some time playing(late game),it becomes a little boring, because units are slow, and map is big,so you need much time to conquer indians or other europeans, even if you're really strong :\

  • @Vozho1337

I agree. Ive had a few games since I saw this vid a couple of weeks ago and the lack of a rational battle system makes this very frustrating towards the end. SO much time saving up horses and muskets only for some nonsense battles to go against me.

HOW DO THE SPANISH GET SUCH HUGE ARMIES SO FAST

  • I finally bought all the expansions for Civilization IV off of Steam last week, I haven't played Colonization yet. Whats it like, in comparison to the Vanilla Civ?

  • theres a similar game around in 1998. do anyone know of its name? been looking for it.

  • Ahh still have this one for DOS.. Im thinking of playing it after watching this video. DOS box headache here i come. -.-

  • Colonization is freeware now so you can download it for free but you can't sell it

  • beutiful

  • Shit i remember playing this on my old windows 98.. wtf i download it and download dosbox and winrar and try to make it work on my lap top vista but it dosnt! do anyone know how to fix and make it work? I also tried same thing on windows xp and it worked choose difficulty and nation but it didnt work when i was about to play it!! help!

  • @ItsMeDannyy You have to run your dosbox in compability mode and admin.

  • download the FreeCol 0.9.2, the remake of this game!

  • I Lov Civ4, any of u lik Warcraft?

  • Yeah, Warcraft is awesome, but im pretty addicted to Conquest: Frontier Wars right now =D

  • This guy didn't mention building a university. I can destroy this game on the viceroy setting by training a couple of veteran soldiers and using them as profs in the university to train an army. In one game I captured every foreign colony and ended up with about 50 veteran dragoon units that were all trained in the colonies. My forces ended up being about 3 times larger than the royal expeditionary force. I'm awesome.

  • I never waste university slots for veterans. I just wait until I got tons of horses and George Washington, then I go on a dragoon based killing/promotion frenzy.

  • Sorry, if there was multiplayer in 1994 I would have destroyed you like a fat kid eating a twinkie. You can't wait around hoping to win some battles using free colonists and indentured servants as soldiers and hope they get promoted. When you play at the highest level you need the 50% veteran bonus before the battle not after! Besides, the more educated colonists you have the higher you score.

As an aside, do you happen to have the cd? I lost mine. Can you hook me up?

  • Universities cost so much tools, that until you can afford them with your economy, you already have George Washington in your congress. If there was a multiplayer in 1994, until you could train your fat-twinky-kid-destroyer-troops, my mighty colonial empire is on the road to independence, with a lot of dead indians around.

The only way for you to win, is having my final score reduced by destroying native settlements.

  • what are you taaaaaalking about. How much is it for 200 tools? like 600? 800? After it's built I pump out like 25 soldiers in each colony with a university. I'm telling you I had 3 times more veteran units than the royal expeditionary force. It was a joke, I destroyed the REF without even getting help from a European power. That doesn't even include the 30 artillery pieces I built domestically. I just don't see how you could overcome that.

  • You need: 6 rounds for 3 veterans or 50 rounds for 25 veterans. So you get 100 veterans in 4 cities in 50rounds. I need: 8 rounds for 3 statemen or 50 rounds for 18.75 statemen Since I hardly build more than 12 colonies I only need 2 Universities. The 400 tools I save, become 400 muskets for 8 soldiers soon to be veterans thanks to George Washington. Meanwhile your unarmed veterans are still looking for a twinky kid to bully around. :)
  • I don't see your point. You're way off. All you guys talk about tools like they're some sort of scarce commodity... wtf, get a pioneer to build a road into the mountains and get ore miners to mine ore. Then send the ore back to your big colonies and have blacksmiths smelt them into tools. It sounds like a lot of work but once you set it up and have all your production bonuses in place you can make 72 muskets every turn. 72! Every one my veterans was armed with muskets.

  • For an experienced player tools ARE a scarce commodity. You personally admit that it is a lot of work to get 72 muskets per turn running. But that is worth it! Ironworks, armories, universities etc. are crying for tools and you have to make though decisions over decades what comes first. That's what I love about colonization, it gives you a realistic feel of building up an economy from nothing.

  • Tools may be scarce in the beginning when you do have to make choices about what to build. However, like I said, a couple of pioneers can build roads into the mountains and you can make all the tools you will ever need. I'm not saying you're going to gain independence in 1620. But there is easily enough ore to make tools and muskets for every single unit in the game. The computer automatically makes muskets 19/unit in Europe by the end of the game and I always sell 2000 tons of muskets.

  • Me too.

  • Do a Google search for "download Colonization"?

I thought it was abandoneware so it was legal...but things could have changed since Civ4 Colonization came out last year.

I still play the original Civilization game but I havent owned a copy (floppy rawr!) since ... 1995 I think?

  • @Lolzerzomg It's a shame, but just because a game has been abandoned and can't be bought, doesn't mean it's legal to download. Whether it's moral is another question, though.

  • @bce23w

Well all I can say to that is I wont have a guilty conscience "downloading" a game that is impossible to buy via retail.

  • well, if the game only went missing and you still have the instruction manual, box or some other proof you own it then it's your right?

But people who never owned it should probably just buy the new version or download FreeCol.

  • I dont care to go into the debate about who has a "right" to some antique video game. Its an unnecessary debate.

As for FreeCol...I hate it with a passion, it doesnt "feel" like the original Colonization, I find the little things they do to "improve" upon the original game to be annoying.

And Civ4/Col4, theres a lag that annoys me that just doesnt exist with the original games, its as if every new Civ past the second game just kept going in a backwards direction. In every way.

    Progress right?

  • There is a website where you can check the legality of free and legal games online. I have over 200k PC games of which all are free and legal. Do a google search for liberatedgames. Also, you can verify free and legal software via phone in the US by contacting your local BBB office though you may be put on hold for quite some time :)

  • can I touch you?

  • no but you can kiss my pinky ring.

  • I just used your tactics now and they are awsome. They are like Blitzkrieg tactics I am rolling everyone.

  • yo hook me up with a copy of the game.

  • Wow I never knew that they made an older Colonization, I thought the one on Civ 4's engine was the only one.

  • Yeah, the new one is a fairly faithful remake of this classic. But it was also remade for Windows shortly after the dos version, rescalable like the win versions of civ1 and 2 (so you could play at any resolution=)

  • Colonization for dos is the best :P The game of my youth...
