I've always wondered if Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich ever heard Ginger play. He stretched out what they started. Amazing drummer. He definitely had something to say musically. Also, Louis Bellson would be stunned at what Ginger could do with twin double bass drums
There is no better drummer that Ginger..... It is what is, If there is, please tell me, and better yet show me, especially after you watch this, Ginger OWNED the drumset, more than any other I have ever seen.
Levon Helm of The Band said in a interview that "Ginger Baker was so good he was scary." Truly the god of thunder! And to think they supposedly gave that nickname to the drummer from Def Leppard. OH PLEASE! A shame the guy lost his arm and all, but REALLY NOW!
While many drum solos are mostly the drummer showing off his/her technical skills, there are exceptions. Ginger Baker really paints landscapes and takes you there.
once upn a time there were three gods;-the earth god, who could cause earthquakes, tsunamis, etc by using his sticks, the god of the wind, whom, with his fingers could cause tornados and hurricanes, and the god of fire, whom, with his power and wisdom, could make great lava balls. one day, seeing the world falling into great chaos, they decided to use theire powers to amuse human beeings with theire abilities. it was then an age of peace, till they had to brake up to restore theire powers.
@brooktrout8 Ginger's drumming is an inspiration for all younger rock drummers of cause. My God, I'm Ian Paices fun, but Ginger thrills me too. GENIUS!!!!
@brooktrout8 As a drummer, I may be forced to agree with you there. As a drummer myself, I have been able to somewhat get down Neil Peart's, John Bonham's, and Ian Paice's style of playing...even Keith Moon's...but ginger, and this solo in particular, has proven far more difficult to copy even remotely. His hands and feet are doing so many bizarre things at once it's insane. Toad remains undoubtedly one of the greatest drum solos ever.
@claptonbrucebaker Not to mention I'm not sure anybody except maybe Buddy Rich, some of the other other jazz greats could play with sustained energy like this for ten minutes. This solo has no relaxation period in it, it is continuously physically demanding and rhythmically complex.. Going even five minutes playing stuff like this is physically demanding. Ginger is the perfect fusion of a jazz and a rock drummer. even crazier is that he plays both styles with his limbs at once
@jetfreak4 When Ginger was a teenager he was a champion cyclist and had high hopes of reaching Tour De France level, until some taxi driver knocked him off his bike and wrecked it. That is probably where he gets the power and stamina from. He also has a love of polo which is also physically demanding. Ginger's four limb independence on drums is incredible. Afrobeat drummer Tony allen said,"Ginger was the only White drummer who could truely grasp the African rhythms."
@brooktrout8 As a drummer in a classic rock band myself i grow up listening to Cream and the other great 60's bands Baker was and is still my fav. of all rock drummers there was no match for him. he Is the best rocker drummer to come out of the 60's and i will be 61 in a couple of days.
@bigguy4570 Ginger Baker's Toad solo in 2005 at the age of 67 is every bit as hard to play as this....how he is able to keep the hi-hat beating so constantly, not to mention on the offbeat, and changing his left foot from the hi-hat to the left-bass drum...there's just no words to describe it. He plays with more strength and endurance even today than most 20 year olds.
Fortuitously for you...YouTube is an ideal forum to promulgate your ignorance regarding the drumming arts in a public forum--dominated by people who care less and definitively know less than you do.
Ginger is the top five drummers of all time.He is the one that i heard in 1968 and that is when i picked up the sticks and stared to play. Also Gene Krupa and of course Buddy Rich but Ginger is the man!
It isn't crap. This whole piece of footage is not as much about the concert, as it is about the three persons playing. The performances that are shown are there to be a part of this documentary and therefore they are intended to be a different type of video compared to a traditional live footage.

@MattHatter John Bonham's biggest influence was Ginger Baker. His early solos sound like Baker replicas, and his thunder definitely came out of this.

@jetfreak4 Spot on. Ginger has incredible polyrhythm skills. My favourite solo is the studio version of (DO WHAT YOU LIKE) Blind Faith.
