  • too bad they ruined the song with all the Barb photos ? like hay what the ? pet the cat the wrong way also ?

  • My jewish papa.....WONDERFUL version...fantatsicccccccccccccc!!!

  • hope i get to hear this someday. the song is sung in english, no?

  • @ruaxhatsafon

Yes, in english, ecept for the title words.

  • @albertdiner boy that would've cool though if she sang in yiddish, i didn't think she would but hey eartha kitt sings in many obscure languages. thanks for your reply AND for posting this.

  • go to

Billie Holiday sings "A Yiddishe Momme" (1956)

  • Por que quitaron el audio? es una pena! pues es una cancion preciosa!

    Ojala lo solucionen pronto,

    Saludos.

  • Billie Holiday was on a totally different plane than Barbra Streisand.I was hoping to hear the song but no dice.Did she ever sing it?

  • @loulou2lou This is from a rehearsal tape for a concert; clarinetist Tony Scott is at the piano, and his toddler was running around. Billie also sings "Beer Barrel Polka" for a bit and then makes baby sounds. She went into this as a lullaby - I hope the sound comes back as this is truly wonderful. She never recorded this, to the best of my knowledge. (It may turn up on the Billie Birthday Broadcast later this month WKCR.org - that's where I heard it. Phil Schaap has the entire rehearsal.)

  • no sound...

  • "Soeth ohw od ton keli ot raesh, will ton eb raeshd whit."

  • no sound

  • no sound ;(

  • i know it! you have to sing alone!

  • 'Where is the sound???????????????

  • No Sound!!!!!

  • Oh really,Jews huh. That's a stupid comment and if you are Jewish and wrote it then u are even more of an idiot.

  • What is most ironic is that WMG is run by Jews...

  • those idiots at WMG don't realize that by allowing it on You Tube, it would only muster up more curiosity and interest, causing thousands more to buy the whole damned B.H. Verve collection. Oi Vey, are they meshugenahs!

  • What utter stupidity. This is truly disgusting!

  • Ot is possible that WMG and YOUTUBE

will come to an agreement and the

audio of this video will return.

Please be patient. The performance by

Billie Holiday of this yiddish song is

unique. The video is now mute, but

it serves to provide information about the

    existance of this song.

  • @albertdiner and there was me trying to fix the sound on the computer!!

  • You really need to take this down.

  • Why is there no sound?

  • This video previously contained an audio track. Due to a claim by a copyright holder, the audio track has been permanently muted.

  • Yeah, they'd be losing million$ by this being on YouTube.

  • It is a shame they won't let the song be played-I've had a couple that wouldn't upload because of copyright-I thought it was stupid because if people liked what they were hearing-maybe they would purchase the song-good advertisement!

  • STILL no sound!!

  • I hope that WMG Warner Music Group will

eventually find an agreement with youtube

that will allow the audio track and WMG will have advertisement rights.

  • satchmo got his first horn from the jewish family he worked with... he never forgot... he wore a star of david his whole life.

  • This video is now mute. Someone claimed the copyright on this 1956 audio tape released

as a selection in a recent CD. Supposedly

copyright work before 1964 had a 28 yr limit.

Upon its expiration it had to be renewed. If

it was not renewed, it is considered Public

Domain. It's too complicated to check the

    copyright history of this selection.

    So it is now mute.

I recommend to buy the CD.

  • I'm sorry if it should be plain for me to see, but what's the name of the CD that this is on?

  • It is from a BOX set called:

Complete Billie Holiday on Verve 1945-1959

  • this song is so beautiful, it makes me cry...in a good way.

  • Perhaps Rollich only heard the first few bars. I think it is a beautiful version of this song, just beautiful.

  • kol a kavod le khol a imaot che ba yolam

  • Billie Holiday destroys this song in this rendition. I wonder what was behind the recording, which should have been buried.

  • please note that this is a rehearsal tape only

released in the last years as a bonus track.

It was very common in the 1950s for black singers to record jewish songs. Belafonte recorded Hava Naguila, Eartha Kitt recorded'Rumania, Rumania, Paul Robeson recorded many yiddish songs, Jackie Wilson

had ahit with My Yiddishe Mame, and Billy

    Eckstein also recorded several yiddish

tracks. Ella Fitzgerals recorded Bei Mir

Bistu Schoen. Louis Arnstrong knew yiddish.

  • Johnny Mathis recorded Kol Nidre in hebrew in

1958, as well as two yiddish songs Eli Eli, and WHERE CAN I GO., in 1958. All these entertainers played the major clubs in the

Borscht Belt (Catskills Mountains) and Miami

Beach, and had the opportunity to learn

    yiddish songs.

  • Billy Daniels did the best job on this song I have ever heard, he was magnificent, and even had the haimishe inflection in his voice. Your work is much appreciated Albert.

  • Thanks for your comments. Someone uploaded the

Billy Daniels version on youtube, and it's very good including the yiddish lyrics and

    intonations at the end.

I uploaded this song because I know that

Billie Holiday has been one of Barbra Streisand's great influence as to the choice

of songs she recorded and the importance of

phrasing the lyrics properly. Each one has her

own singing style. If Barbra records

this song, it will in the style of

Billie Holiday's version, not Sophie Tucker's.

  • An example of Barbra singing Yiddish is: "Avenu Malkeinu" from 'Higher Ground' album.

And she played Jewish girl/lady in several of

her movies, like 'Funny Girl' & 'Yentl' -just 2 examples...Her Jewish songs never became famous hits, though they were beautiful & she did add Jewish style to many of her songs.

  • "Avinu Malkeinu" is sung in Hebrew, not yiddish. She has sung in english using a

yiddish accent, such as in Funny Lady, Second

hand rose, and others, but there cannot be

considered as Barbra singing Yiddish. What's

amazing she knows the language and could sing

it well. She could have sang a yiddish song

in her Berlin Tour, but did not. So we suffer.....

  • Reply to albertdiner, Oh, Please do not suffer... Just love her music. Perhaps, you could contact & ask her. She is a nice person,

contrary from what many people say about her &

they do Not know her. Very compassionate!

    -from a fellow professional musician

  • ¨so we suffer...is a yiddish saying¨

I´m sure Barbra has her professional guidance

and songs written specially for her. The fact

that she´s the most successful female vocalist

is proof that she was well guided. She has

sung in hebrew, french, italian, german, spanish, but not in yiddish the language

spoken at her grandparents home where she

grew up. The Yentl DVD should in fact have

included a yiddish audio language track, since

the short story by Bashevis Singer was originally yiddish.

  • albertdiner, Thank you, whatever you say. Okay.

Though I do not think you like her for this one reason that you have stated. Barbra is so gifted, she has a right to sing

& act whatever she wants. Wish you knew her.

Sincerely, Penny ( My best to you & perhaps,

if you contacted her, she would oblidge your

    desire.)

  • I think Barbra is great, but I only wish she

would do a little contribution on her part for

the yiddish language. Maybe she has recorded

in yiddish, but the songs were never released.

  • REPLY TO albertdiner, Well, I do agree with you that in US, the songs would unfortunatly

not be popular or get any play. Yes, were not released, sadly, by producers/management for this reason. God Bless, Penny(Still wish you could contact her about a special CD, I know

she would listen & do her best...)- Penny

  • why should she?

  • Barbra has song Yiddishe songs on her CD's.

She emulated her father,Emmanel, not to say she did't love her mother. And yes, loved Judy Garland & Billie. Billie was another Musical Icon. Do not forget Barbra produced, directed & starred in 'Yentl', film about European Jews.

  • There is also a wonderful version of this song by Andre Toussaint. I came across it randomly, not sure where one could get a copy.

  • Terribly confusing.

  • you made us think sounds like the families there your a cool nanna!

  • It remains :

    Never Forget......

    But Please forget This Ignorance

  • Heartwarming rendition, and lovely photos. TY.

  • I should like to dedicate this song to CantStand YaCastanza. This one from Billy Holiday,Tom Jones,Connie Francis, and many others who believe her to be so knowledgeable and perceptive in this area of people and particularly their ethnic origins.Everyone knows that only Jews sing Jewish or Hebrew songs. Is not Billy Holiday a perfect example of this. To publicly call me and her listeners stupid for not knowing this-speaks volumes of her!!

  • I would also like to add Julie Andrews who also did a Jewish album,as well as Charles Aznavour who also sings "my yiddishe mama" available by an Albert Diner posting on you tube. He also makes mention of Edith Piaf whom he claims sang many Jewish songs to Leo Fuld.Your credibility diminishes with each passing day and the securing of more and more info to refute your lame arguments.

  • Who's the sexy man at 00:11 - 00:19?

  • It's a photo of Emanuel Streisand and Diana

Rosen, Barbra Streisand's parents. Her father

died when she was just 14 months old. He died

in 1943, and he was a professor with a doctorate from Columbia University.

  • How did he die,or of what?

  • Jason's wonderful.

  • This is great. I'm glad you found it and put it on the internet.

    THANK YOU.

  • I don't think so, I have almost everything she did except for the few missing recordings. great job post more.

  • This is a great song were can I get a copy. I love billie!

  • It's included in 2 tracks in THE COMPLETE

BILLIE HOLIDAY ON VERVE (Records) 1945-1959.

I united the two tracks for this video. I

wonder if she ever made a studio recording of

    this song.

  • Wow! Thanks from Berlin. Simply love it. God bless you for bringing the Heaven closer to the earth.

  • This is great! The spontaneity and the background noise make it really special.
