What's the point, BigBingF? LMT was a Civil War song with altered lyrics. But Elvis recorded several Viennese waltzes; at least two Neapolitan songs with English lyrics; some Spanish songs, a German song ("Wooden Heart"), etc. Hank Snow recorded "A Fool Such As I" a few years before Elvis. Jaye P. Morgan preceded E's recording of "Lonesome" by 1 year. Mama Thornton had HD first. Elvis recorded other blues ("So Glad You're Mine," "Mystery Train," etc.). Like all geniuses he was a sponge.
Most Elvis apologists forget that he "borrowed" the wonderful "Aura Lee" and this one was a nice hit for Blue Barron...which was "borrowed" as well. A couple of generations has no idea of the origination of these dreamy ballads, as they just think "the king" had invented them. Not saying he didn't sing them adequately, but, of course, Bing, in the late 30's, his peak period, was tops, bar none, even given Elvis' peak time.
@BigBingFan Bing didn't record this song did he. I have the book Joel Whitburn's Pop Memories 1890-1954. It says Bing was the most popular singer of the first half of the 20th Century. He has 10 pages of charted hits in it.
As you say, Love Me Tender was Aura Lee. And my generation didn't know it. But Bing didn't chart Aura Lee either.
Hey-thanks for the comment. Bing did record the song in 1959, under "Aura Lee"-it was on a Sing-a-Long record, as part of a medley. This was, of course past Bing's "Golden-throated years"-which I rate as from 1938 to 1943. Still, he recorded it. For one of his best here, go to "Yours is My Heart Alone"-Bing's version. He was in excellent voice. Try it-let me know.
Oddly enough, although this was one of Elvis' biggest hits, he didn't want to do the song, didn't like the song, thought it was corny. But he did it as a favor to Tom Parker's wife. It was her favorite song, so he did it for her, and history was made.
A great song is supposed to be re-recorded every generation. If you don't believe me then ask the guy who wrote it.

Does anyone know who wrote the spoken interlude to this song?

This goes back to at least to 1927. Check out Vaughn DeLeath.

This one more shows why Elvis was such a great singer. Much more soul in his interpretation.
