I've seen this movie so many times but I just now noticed for the first time the books that the woman is reading in front of the "Creative Bullpen". Lol :D
i love the "what will this cost?" room, there's like 500 people in there. and the guys look when the accountant adds the 1 in front of .79. and then the $3.99 sticker! a great look at american capitalism.
@CygnusXII There are 3 music pieces. None of them is Breakfast Machine by Danny Elfman. I only know the last song which is the Sabre Dance a famous piece used in a lot of movies. The other 2 are i think original Carter Burwell music. It's even called hula hoop song on the cd.
I love the cinematography for this movie, it's astounding. Sam Rami probably helped there as well, considering the Coen Brothers never really get this visually intense. This and Raising Arizona are their two most cartoony comedies.
i saw this movie in a cinema, was 20 at that time (i remember the whole audience was laughing during half an hour, i don't know why, sometimes it happens it's really exiting) .when the kid takes the hullahoop i thought i was dying...again you hve that scene where time is suspended and newman is petrified. you need to see on a cinema screen. if not you loose a lot.

The Hudsucker Proxy is NOT! even close to the real story behind either the Hula Hoop or the Frisbee... not their invention, their production, their naming, or ANY part of it! NOT in any shape, or form! Complete and total fiction!
I didn't realize that the Coens' decision to use the hula hoop phenomenon as a device in an imaginative work of cinematic fiction rather than relaying in a tepid, COMPLETELY historically accurate documentary fashion its origins means that they're "morons."
Also, they were not initially put in TOY STORES, they were added to the product distribution in SPORTING GOOD stores along with the Sling Shots, the Cross Bows, and the water sports devices... there was NOTHING in this film that was in the least!! accurate, at ALL! And Kids did not gravitate towards them naturally, it was the potential to be in the matinee newreels and the national contests, that my Dad promoted into existence, which made them attractive to people.
This is indeed a very underrated movie. As a big fan of the Coen Brothers i am surprised how relatively unknown this movie is. This is, without a doubt, a great sequence. The boy with the hullahop round his neck in the end is a great shot!
BRILLIANT !!! The Editing is Fierce. The Cinematography is superb. The Score MOVES the action. The Production Design is superlative. The Best Scene in one of the best Coen brothers film........... without a doubt !!!!!!
I love this scene so much. From the pneumatic tubes, the acounting that adds a one,the insane proving ground, the agonising advertising, the desperate shop owner, and my favourite, the beginning of a fad, the screaming children, and the skyrocketing price. Genius.
i love the part when they're figuring the price

Also, isn't it pure eye-candy? If you want your movie to look gorgeous, hire Roger Deakins.

The Song used in this scene that everyone likes is Breakfast Machine by Danny Elfman. It was written for Peewee Hermans Big Adventure.
It was also used for the Big Blue Ball Machine Animated GiF

I love this scene and this movie. They are borrowing heavily on Terry Gilliam though. Anyone who likes this should check out 'Brazil'.
Tailslide1970 3 years ago
Yeah def. Was reminded much of brazil, esp visually. Thematically. Thematically,it's more Frank Capra meets Howard Hawks.
