@skleung Yes. They are not "difficult" to groom, but they require a lot of grooming. We groom her about once a fortnight - and that is us being lazy. It would be best to groom them once or twice a week and not let it "build up". We use two different combs to groom her, a quick once over with a under-brush comb and then a more thorough comb through with just a normal comb. To groom her properly we had to train her to enjoy sitting still and being patient for awhile and do it in bits.
When she was able to happily enjoy us grooming her all over in one go (some dogs love this, but Jazz never did and took her a while to learn) we literally start from her face right to her tail. If you youtube rough collie grooming you will get a feel for what's involved. Some examples the dog will look matted, but they get that way from not being groomed well enough. It sounds like a lot of work and it is, but it is not a horrible experience. Doesn't bother me that she take the extra effort.
Thought about rough collie as a possible dog, though I have 2 years to decide on a breed. I think a rough collie would be nice. I took a dog breed test and got matched with one. :3 They seem to have really sweet personalities!
@Vulpinepath They have the best personalities! They really are extremely sweet, affectionate and gentle. I've never met a collie with a mean bone in its body. Once they bond with you, it's unbreakable, and their loyalty is beyond any comparison. Every collie we've had has been a mind reader. Our first, Gus, used to know when my mom was thinking about going for a walk and run up to her closet and take her sneakers to her!
I'm going to have soooo much fun with my rough sable when he comes wednesday.. I'm not going to lie.. I'm.. kind of nervous. I've never owned a rough collie. o.o I'll put up a video though and update.
Hi from N.Z. I was lucky enough to own 3 Roughs {at the same time!} Crystal & Brandy died way too young tragedly. Cancer took Brandy soon after she became a champion at aged 4. But Bryn lived a long and happy life 1991-2003 and was a blessing to all our family, esp my parents. He used to visit old peoples homes, they loved him. When i feel sad i watch vids like this and tears still well up. Thankyou for the vid, cherish her,i know you do. Alan
@Lethalporpoise Hey thanks for your comment to. Makes the early loss of the girls a little less painful when remembered like this. And when grooming Bryn he sounded like your doggie Jazz {cool name} boy did he tell us all about it, ow wow wow & all that but really i knew he loved that and all the attention he was getting. Big softy!!!!
:D i'm getting a rough collie, can you tell me what to expect or what to get for my new baby. i know the standard stuff but i want to be prepared THANK YOU SHE IS SO CUTE hope my baby is as cute as yours.
Collies have changed so much since I was growing up. Yours actually has eyes for these times. The collies of my youth-- large beautiful eyes were the norm. I hear from collie people that small beady eyes haven't improved collie eye syndrome. What shame, such a price to pay. I implore everyone considering a collie to study what has transpired the last 40+ years and decide from there. It is truly amazing what short a time it takes to change a breed--no matter the breed.
@doberchic They can all be very different. Lots of different varieties, all suffering from collie eye anomaly. We got her checked out as a pup and she was cleared, the price of good breeding I think.
wonderful :) I used to have 2 rough collies, Zelda and Flora, but Zelda sadly past away a few years ago. Jazz sounds exacly like her. She used to go all crazy and chatty when we pet her back/butt and she tried to push her butt against us so we wouldn't stop. lol. Thanx for sharing this clip, it reminded me so much of her. <3
godess, you may say borzoi's have long snouts, but rough collies have not only long snouts, but they look interesting, like a baby horse, like this one does, i havent seen many rough collies that look as extreme as this one, which is why i like the look of this dog
@lassie55 so get a borzoi they are related I read.. well borzoi not by collies but borzois in collies of today(not originally) they have the same kinda snout but longer
My collie did that. We'd just be laying around reading or something, and she'd start talking. We'd hold a conversation for several minutes at times. I swear she was half human and knew complete English. And had a personality to match.
@lassie55 Hi, she's a female, 7 months old. The breed can look quite different in the face at times depending on where you buy one from, but the long nose is a standard :)
@Lethalporpoise I hope all is well with you and your talkative girl. I own two Roughs, one female (Lady) that is six and the olther is a two year old male (MacTavish). Lady looks almost identical to your girl, including the long snout and the widow's peak on her forehead. Lady is quite a talker herself. We call her Lady Monalot (Moan-A-Lot).
My Collie Jojo is sitting here beside me an watches this clip on the monitor, turns his head to the left then to the right and listens to Jazz. Even he is now 3 years old he has such "information exchange" moments several times a day. Jojo likes this video, and so do I.

well, if i get a rouugh collie, i really want to get one with the longest snout ever,
and all the extreme features, at 0:30, you seem to have your hand wrapped around its snout in your hand, do they mind that done to them?
